4 out of 5 eggsGood Product Would Recommend Again

Pros: Good price, plays just about any media format out there, nice features.

Cons: None at this time,

Other Thoughts: I bought one of these at the local Micro center store as oppose to a new one because for whatever extremely stupid reason WD decided it would be fantastic to drop Netflix capability from the new device! Would love to hear that reasoning (subtracted an egg for that)!

I have a W2K3 x64 Std server housing all my movies and TV shows (3 TBs of files) with several shares setup in a workgroup not a domain. I am running one of these refurb units, a gen1 (best device ever never any problems flawless! Owned for over five years! Take notes WD!), and a new model. All three boxes connect to the shares on the W2K3 box without issue and play fine. Caveat being you have to know about Windows networking and sharing. Just setting up a folder on a Windows PC and connecting the device right out of the box may not work as many other people have stated. My devices are all connected via gigabit LAN with all CAT 6 cabling not WLAN. Wireless media streaming in my opinion is for the birds regardless of your WiFi setup. Hard line will never give you problems like WiFi could and its obviously faster.

Overall, I am very pleased with WD media players and will continue to recommend them to friends. I'm not a fan of no Netflix support, but believe its a bit much to "throw the baby out with the bath water." The devices and more importantly the network if setup properly are great. Feel free to ask questions.

3 out of 5 eggsSome startup problems

Pros: Good mix of Streaming services with network support

Cons: Serious troubleshooting to get the unit to work

Other Thoughts: Bought this unit after reading reveiws - I've got a big collection of mkv and avi files, and was looking for Netflix support. I've owned a WDTV (1st generation ) before, and liked it as it was simple and just worked - I liked it so much I gave Gen1s to family. Thought this unit would be the best fit for my requirements.

The objective of the unit was to drive an old LG monitor in my bedroom, combined with external speakers - a quick and dirty TV setup using parts I had lying around. When I fired up the unit when connected to the monitor, it misdiagnosed the monitor, and displayed the incorrect colour space (washed out magenta). Upon playing files, the unit would start to play and successfully play files from both local and network connected sources, but the loading icon and/or the video overlay would stay on the screen and the remote would become non responsive. Only fix was to power cycle, and repeat. Tried resetting, tried downgrading, to no effect. After a day of trouble shooting, finally connected the unit to my TV - and it worked perfectly). After some further troubleshooting, I read an article on WDC tech support, and powered the unit first, then connected the HDMI after the WDTV had booted. This was successful - the colour space was correct, and video playback was fine.

In general, the unit does what I expected, but spending four days to get it operational for what in the end was a simple workaround seems ridiculous.

4 out of 5 eggsIt Works!

Pros: Play's all video files, except MP4...
That being the case... video converting is sometimes needed.

Cons: Updating the Firmware causes it to run slow and not play video files.

Once in a blue moon, it will fail to play some video files all together, and the only solution is to do a device factory reset.

Streaming videos wireless-ly kinda sucks.
I wouldn't recommend doing that...

Other Thoughts: It's great! I've had mine for 3 years and I still use it till this day!
Totally get one! :]

3 out of 5 eggsWD TV Live

Pros: Excellent media player for the price, it has numerous media content for all.

Cons: Do not connect your external hard drive, it will corrupt all the data and force you to format the entire drive. Believe me i know. It is best to have a backup if you still intend to connect your external drive.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat device with fiddly networking

Pros: Very inexpensive, great video quality, efficient gui, works flawlessly with attached USB storage, really nice (free) virtual remote for mobile devices, most of the same services that are available on Roku

Cons: Network shares are very fiddly but free workarounds are available

Other Thoughts: Refurb is as good as new but comes without batteries for (good sized) remote and any documentation whatsoever (available at support.wdc.com). I bought this to access a huge collection of videos on my main desktop machine in another room and for the most part it does this well. Media accessed via one of the two USB ports is cataloged quickly and plays flawlessly. Subtitle and DVD handling are excellent.

However, given that the main reason to buy the WDTV Live over Roku, for example, is the potential to stream all kinds of media wirelessly, networking the device is more challenging than it should be. Setting up network shares requires an intermediate knowledge of Windows networking to begin with and the problem for almost everybody is that the shares don't hold.

This is as much a Windows problem as it is the device's. Windows uses what is called a "master browser" to create the WDTV catalog. If you only have one Windows device turned on in the local network the shares work pretty well. But if you turn on a laptop, for instance, before you turn on the machine with the media, there's a good chance the laptop will become the master browser and your shares will be invisible. Even when network shares "worked" some of my shared volumes were never visible to the WDTV. Frankly, it's just too fiddly to be worth bothering with.

Fortunately there is an easy way around this problem: install the free Plex server on the machine with the media and connect it to the WDTV via DLNA. Plex does a great job of organizing movies, tv shows, photos and music and it's a snap to set up. Most importantly, it doesn't matter what else is going on with the network and your USB attached media is still accessible. The only drawback I've found is that when connected via DLNA, the WDTV cannot access external subtitles. Embedded subtitles work fine. Also DLNA does not support DVD menus which the network shares option does. Videos with external subtitles and DVDs can be put on an attached USB drive. Any services such as Netflix or Spotify are still available when remote media is accessed via Plex.

I suppose one could also use XBMC rather than Plex but I am personally not familiar with XBMC.

Perhaps it shouldn't require a third party solution to work as advertised but for the money, I'm completely happy with the WDTV. If you're considering a purchase, do yourself a favor and skip network shares altogether and go right to Plex. Another plus for Plex is that there are inexpensive mobile apps that let you access your media from anywhere (a browser version for remote access is of course free). Despite its quirks the WDTV makes me think more highly of Western Digital.

2 out of 5 eggsDIED after 4 months - not worth it

Pros: worked well out of the box

Cons: stop reading the movie file in the middle of watching a movie. I guess refurb does not mean that it is really good as new, just means manufacturer was able to make it work for now bit really does not know if patch work to make it function properly really fixed the problem. No more refurbs for me going forward, at least not from WD, their refurbs don't seem to be reliable.

1 out of 5 eggsCant see Shares

Pros: none

Cons: Its stopped accessing my network shares from my windows 7 machine it worked fine for a couple of weeks and now it wont take my username or password. I got this thing so I could just watch videos without dealing with a computer but its turn into another mess which isnt what I wanted. The thing is useless to me till I spend the time to troubleshoot it

Should accessing shares work and then abruptly stop working, then there may have been some changes to your OS.
We recommend verifying that sharing is enable for the file locations, as well as the appropriate permissions through Windows, as the player may no longer be allowed access to the location through Windows.

4 out of 5 eggsNice Media Player

Pros: Small, powerful, nice interface, plays just about all types of media files, including VOB which I need. Refurb was in perfect condition and everything works great. Glad I took a chance. I have an identical player I got earlier and liked it so much I got this again for different room. Saved about 30 percent on price.

Cons: Like my other one, it has weak wireless range. Not sure if it can pick up n type wireless, it does pick up the g band.

Other Thoughts: Dont get the new WD Play version of this media player if you want to play VOB files cuz it doesnt. The Play version is almost same as Live but is cheaper and didnt meet my needs. So check it closely if you are interested.

1 out of 5 eggsLook Elsewhere

Pros: Worked Great when hooked up wired but never worked correctly wirelessly.

Cons: Had I known I was going to waste so much time on this pc of c__p I would have spent my money someplace else. This is so slow and half the time does not work. Junk! I want to crush this up cause nobody else needs to go through all of the headaches I have just to get this to work. It is too dam slow. For a $100.00 I could have spent on something else that at least worked!

Other Thoughts: Never buy Refurbished. You are buying someone else problems.
