5 out of 5 eggsUltra quiet, compatible and reliable

Pros: I've tested this Western Digital hard disk drive for over month. Model tested was WD10JPVX. It was installed in both Windows and MacBook Pro machines as well in external Transcend 2.5 inch enclosure. It performed in all equipment very well, was always properly recognized, formatted and performed. This HDD runs cool and quiet compared to my other 2.5 inch hard drives. 1 TB of storage gives you plenty of storage space and it will take some time to fill with files before you run out of disk space. Consumes only 0.55 Amps of current (3 times less compared to Samsung Solid State Drive that I own). In United States Western this HDD is covered with 2 years warranty.

Cons: I could not find cons. It does what it is expected to do and it does it well.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend this HDD to anyone who is looking for small, reliable, quiet and cool running hard disk drive covered with 2 years limited warranty. It is great HDD if you need to replace (or add secondary drive) damaged HDD in your notebook. Compatible with MacBook Pro (2012 model) and external Transcend enclosures.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid So Far

Pros: Solid. Got this sucker carved up using a combination of Primary Partitions and Extended Partitions.
No issues so far.

Cons: N/A ATT.

Other Thoughts: I have this in combo with a Mushkin SSD. Using the Mushkin as an OS drive with two OSes and this as the Data/Programs drive for two OSes, boot times are quick, but I still have plenty of storage for what I need.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Inexpensive: I bought it to replace a Playstation 3 160GB Hitachi drive.

The price was what drove me to buying this item.

Cons: I'm on my first RMA- the drive isn't working out so well. I've had to reinstall/format/rebuild 5+ times so far, I'm just hoping it's a bad drive.

Other Thoughts: Like I said, I'm hoping it's just a bad drive. After reading some reviews on here, there shouldn't be a problem.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Basic Large Capacity Drive

Pros: Cool, Quiet, Quality craftsmanship, Made in Malaysia.

COOL: One of the coolest quietest 2.5" slim drives I've experienced.

QUIET: I measured 29 Db and very cool running almost imperceptible difference from ambient temperature.

BUILD QUALITY: Fit & finish is very good, precise. The labels is applied straight & accurately. The Appearance of careful assembly inspires confidence in quality of the product.

COUNTRY OF MANUFACTURE: Drive is made in Malaysia.

Cons: Sharp edges on circuit board and drive case. Stiff competition, price seems high in comparison.

Other Thoughts: I am using this drive in an enclosure as NAS. It's terrific for that as the USB 2.0 interface is the bottleneck and the drive performance eclipses the transfer over the connection.

1 out of 5 eggsNot good for rough use

Pros: Inexpensive, good for ITX or mac mini drive replacements.

Cons: Have had multiple failures of WD blue drives in both 3.5 and 2.5 sizes. If you are going to use this in a fixed location, and speed is not important, it's fine. In laptops I cannot recommend at all. Yes I know there is a 2 year warranty, and I do send these back for replacement, but the wasted time troubleshooting, travelling back to a customer's location, swapping the drives, reinstalling software and OS again, plus the risk of data loss, are not worth the cheaper price. Save money on something else, like using open office instead of MS office.

Other Thoughts: Go for the black WD drives, the extra $20 is worth it.

5 out of 5 eggsMassive Little Drive

Pros: This is a massive 2 ½” hard drive. It runs silently and with very little heat.

This little drive came amazingly well packed. A raw egg could have survived rough shipment in that much bubble wrap. I have received much heavier (3 ½”) drives shipped far less protected. Good for Newegg (or Western Digital). I bet this will result in far fewer DOAs.

Windows 7 installed about as quickly as I would have expected with a 3 ½” drive.

Read and write speeds were outstanding for a 5200 RPM drive. I averaged almost 80 MB/second writes and just over 100 MB/second reads, using a variety of file sizes. These are real-world speed tests; I used a stopwatch.

I am prejudiced I know, but I have had good luck with Western Digital products, so WD is my brand of choice.

The price of this drive is very reasonable (see Other Thoughts).

This would be a great choice for a small server application.

I tested this drive on my 2 year old PS3 (replacing a 160 GB drive) and it worked perfectly.

Cons: The two year warranty period seems kind of odd; most I’ve seen have been 1, 3, or 5 year warranties.
I don’t know if Western Digital is making a statement about the expected reliability of this drive.

It might be that since laptops can be subject to much rougher treatment than a desktop would experience, they are just covering themselves in case the drive is abused.

Other Thoughts: The label warns you that this is an AF (Advanced Format) drive, and that with certain operating systems (like Windows XP) you need to use a special Acronis utility, free at WD's website, to align the partitions to take advantage of the new 4096-byte sector formatting.

I did not download the utility program, this I was happy with the performance in Windows 7. My impression was that this would be a useful feature if you were cloning an older laptop drive, but unnecessary if you were installing a fresh newer operating system. Newer operating systems natively use 4096 NTFS formatting.

This is a niche piece of hardware. The price is within shouting distance of a 240GB SSD drive wiith a good sale, which would give much better performance and lower power consumption, if you only needed the storage capacity required by typical users.

This drive would fill your needs if you need a massive amount of storage, and disk speed and power consumption were not primary concerns.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for a USB3 drive or miniNAS

Pros: I replaced a laptop drive with this one and installed Windows 8.1. It runs fairly quiet compared to other drives I’ve used. Install of Windows took about 16 minutes. 1TB capacity will help with files on the go.

After that I put it into a USB3.0 Enclosure system. It performed very well in this case. I can get transfer speeds of large files to 78.4MB/s write on average. I was able to get 82.5 MB/s read average in testing 4.7GB+ files.

The largest benefit came when I put it into a very tight form factor NAS that I coupled with SSD + two 1TB drives this size. When I did this it was able to keep pace and allowed me to have a very small light weight NAS. I will be using this in RAID1 with SSD as the OS to keep an inexpensive light weight low power NAS going. In this scenario I was getting almost 80MB/s writes with 85MB/s reads.

Cons: It’s not the fastest drive I’ve worked with. The cache appears to be low but when doing large file transfers it can keep up.

Other Thoughts: I hammered it with Crystalmark and for the price range it’s not ground breaking but it’s not bad. It worked better with a solid state combination which is likely given the cache size. It ran a bit cooler than my previous laptop drive. I would say it’s fair as a laptop replacement drive if you want capacity. If you want to build your own USB3 drive or miniNAS then I think it’s best used for this.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat for the Price!!

Pros: Large capacity;1 terabyte in a hard drive this size lets you carry a lot of files, music, images and miscellaneous junk.
Price; For this capacity, this is a very good price.
Temperature; this drive runs cool. At idle it is not even warm to the touch. At full load it only got to 40 degrees C. Very good compared to 3.5 inch drives mounted under the same conditions that were in the 50 degree C range. I was impressed.
Shock resistance; This drive is rated at 400 Gs while operating and 1000 Gs non-operating. In the real world, it is accepted that a Gs rating of 100-200 would mean that you would be safe dropping a drive from about1 foot, of course, depending on whether it lands on carpet or concrete it could even be a little higher. So at 400, this drive should survive at least a 2 foot drop. I inadvertently tested this theory when I accidentally knocked the drive off of a table onto a vinyl covered floor. I plugged it back into my computer and it worked as before. No damage at all!!
Quiet; At a 24-25 decibel rating. You are going to have to listen carefully to hear it. In an enclosure I doubt that you will notice it at all.

Cons: A little slow; The 5400 rpm spin is a tradeoff for the cool operating temps. While it probably affects the transfer rates a bit, they are still more that adequate at around 90-100 mbps on average. I really hesitate to even call this a con.
The two year warranty; Still, for the price it is acceptable.
8mb cache is small, but a larger one would probably increase the price.

Other Thoughts: I tested this drive when it arrived with Western Digital software, to be sure it worked properly, I torture tested it for a several days with AnvilBenchmark then retested. Still no problems. I really like this drive.
This is a 9.5mm thick drive, which is what most laptops would use. This would make a good replacement drive for an average to low end laptop. Slip it into a USB enclosure and it would be a very good portable drive.

4 out of 5 eggsSolid drive for the right user

Pros: - capacity for the form factor is excellent

- price per GB for the form factor is great

- priced competitively for what it offers

- not even warm to the touch in an open air test bed (HDTunePro showed 30* celsius within a laptop enclosure

- minimalist packaging that was just enough to protect the drive from shipping harm

- extremely thin form factor for this class of drive

Cons: - 5400 RPM spindle speed (allows the drive to run cooler, but is noticeably slow in a world off SSD's & 7200 RPM drives

- 8MB cache (coupled with slow spindle speed, again feels noticeably slower when doing something like loading levels in games

- SATA 6.0 read/write speeds benched negligibly faster than standard SATA 3.0 interface

- bare drive (no cables) -- not really a con (because you get what you pay for) but a potential deterrent for some purchasers on a tight budget

- two-year warranty (there's obviously going to be a reduction in shock absorption with a 9mm drive, so the 2-year warranty is about right. I asked twenty random people at work to name what was important to them in a computer component purchase -- and 18/20 said warranty was huge for them)

Other Thoughts: This drive showed average read speeds of around 86 MB per/s, with both HDTune Pro, and Crystal Disc Mark. Write times were comparable at 84 MB per/s. I compared these speeds to a 2TB WD Green drive, and a 4TB 5900 RPM Seagate drive. Not surprisingly, the increased spindle speed/cache size made both of these 3.5" drives feel noticeably faster.

So in terms of raw speed, it's obviously tough to get too excited about a 5400 RPM 8MB cache laptop drive, but there are some definite perks here for the right user. If you are looking to use this as your primary drive in a laptop, or SFF PC, I think it's safe to say that you will most certainly be disappointed by its performance. But I don't think Western Digital is targeting that market.

The WD10JPVX is ideal for a couple of situations that immediately come to mind. Coupled with an SSD in a mid-level laptop -- would be an excellent combination of speed and storage capacity. Leave all of the heavy lifting to the SSD (OS, applications) and use the WD10JPVX for everything else. Capacity is huge. Slower spindle speed = reduced heat, and that heat reduction coupled with the lack of heat given off by SSD's, creates an excellent environment for the long-term health of a laptop. Thermal breakdown is the number one reason why the majority of all laptops are noticeably slower after three years of use. The laptop chassis just isn't designed to dissipate heat efficiently enough to really protect your internal components from long-term damage due to heat. Any opportunity taken to reduce those thermals will reap benefits down the line. Another benefit from the slower spindle speed would be power savings.

Another great use for this drive would be for storage in a SFF PC. The WD10JPVX is only 9mm thick. This, along with the negligible heat it gives off, makes it the perfect candidate to be stashed out of sight behind a mobo tray. In a MATX or ITX build (where space is at a premium) you could run an SSD as a boot/game drive, and then leave the storage chores to the WD10JPVX. It formats to 931MB -- plenty of room for media, and a great amount of space to be used for the alternative folder with an application like Steam Mover. I am currently using the WD10JPVX in that exact capacity in my primary gaming machine. It's tucked away nicely behind the mobo tray, housing all of my Steam/Origin game installs, while my 240GB SSD holds all of my apps/few games I'm playing at the moment.

While i'm definitely a fan of speed-speed-speed, I can't deny the obvious benefits that come along with a drive like this. Big capacity + thin design + low heat = WIN in my book. The only thing holding me back from giving it 5-stars is the warranty. There's obviously going to be a reduction in shock absorption with a 9mm drive, so the 2-year warranty is about right, but could still be a deciding purchasing factor for a lot of people out there.

Was pleasantly surprised by this drive -- very solid overall.

5 out of 5 eggsGood things in small package!

Pros: The drive was shipped to me in a nice and supportive air filled bag deal. It worked well, much better than how hard drives use to be shipped. I think this will make for far less DOA drives. Almost ANYONE that receives a hard drive that is dead will give it a bad rating. This packaging will go a long way and I've seen it being used with the 3.5 inch drives as well. So thumbs up for NewEgg for doing that! This is a bare drive, so nothing comes with it. I was able to format it and partition it without any problems. I've had the drive installed in a Windows environment for almost 2 weeks now and it seems to perform quite nicely. I do not hear that much noise coming from it as well, which is a big plus for a laptop hard drive. I'm sure that it helps with the drive not spinning as fast as some other drives. 1TB is pretty nice to have in this small of a drive! I was able to load this drive up with a LOT of Master Cam and Autodesk drawing files and there is PLENTY of room to spare.

Speed is pretty decent for this drive. I have noticed that speeds dip a little bit when doing random file transfer but for the most part I'm seeing 96MB/sec with HD Tune. I have a feeling that my laptop could have been a little bit of a bottle neck, but I think for the most part, if you have SATA3 you'll see 100MB or better. The Average speed was 78MB/sec. This drive stayed pretty cool at 80 degrees which means that your laptop will not feel like it is burning in your lap! Always keep in mind that, parts with cooler temperatures tend to live a much longer life.

After testing it out on a few laptops I thought it would be interesting to see it if would work in my PS3 Slim and it did. I had it installed and up and running within 30 or so minutes (had to download some Sony stuff). So if you are looking for more storage for your PlayStation, look no further and now you will have plenty of space for games and other media files.

Cons: : Speed, but you can't have it all... At least not yet... I'm sure WD will make a drive like this with a faster spindle and more cache! 8MB is pretty terrible in my opinion. A drive like this would REALLY benefit with a 16MB or 32MB cache to keep buffers full.

Other Thoughts: Honestly, this drive has done well for what it is. Yes, it is hampered by slower spindle speed and cache, but the storage capacity more than makes up for its few short comings. I've run / tested this drive A LOT and have had no issues what so ever. Western Digital has always made a solid product and I feel like they continue to do so. The new way of shipping hard drives have greatly affected their life. I hope that NewEgg will continue shipping drive(s) in this new bubble air bladder pack. I really think that it will cut down on DOA product. If you are looking for a 2.5 inch hard drive that runs cool and has large capacity, this is the drive for you! Whether you are using this in a media PC, Sony PS3 or laptop, it should do what you need it to and still have plenty of storage space available! Even with me being a EggExpert reviewer, I want people to know what is going to work, how intuitive a product is and that it is a value, because at the end of the day that is all one can ask for! I look forward to continued good service out of this product and feel that it is a great deal!
