Does this drive come with windows 7 already installed?

No, this is hardware. You have to install an OS or format it as a data storage device according to your needs. There is no "recovery partition". If you are replacing a failed drive on a retail computer, you can download the OS on another computer, burn it to a DVD in ISO format, run the disk on the computer with the new drive, and use the OS license that came with your computer. There is often a decal with the license on the computer. There are other ways to accomplish this but you know what you have available.

I HAVE A DELL INSPIRON M5040 WITH A DEAD SEAGATE MOMENTUS 5400.6  500GB DARD DRIVE.  WILL THIS WESTERN DIGITAL FIT OK?

I am not familiar with your Computer. I had no problem installing mine. Just make sure you're changing a SATA drive not an IDE.
 The hardest part was figuring out how to get the back cover off. Also remove the battery before you do any work inside the computer.

The WD hard drive and the samsung hdd-hm501ii initially on your laptop appear to be similar size etc. The WD Blue WD5000LPVX 500GB 5400 RPM hard drive should work with your Dell N5010.  WD has utilities that you can download from the WD website to help set up your new WD drive.

What is a bare hard drive?

"Bare" means it's packaged in an anti-static bag. "Retail" packaging comes in a box, lots of pretty colors, a manual (like you need a manual) and perhaps a cool looking decal. In the end, all you end up using is the drive itself. No need to spend $$$ for a fancy package. Sometimes I do go with the retail package, but that will be because no bare ones are available. I've owned two of these for about a year now. Obviously, not quite as snappy as a 7200 RPM drive, but 100% reliable and a great price.

How do you know which height to choose? 7.00mm or 9.5mm? Please help me I have an Asus Laptop that has a busted hard drive and I'd like to fix it without taking it into a shop. Thank you very much.

Honestly the easiest thing to do is an old fashioned tape measure.  If you hold the drive up to measure the thickness a 7mm drive will be between 1/4 and 5/16 of an inch.  A 9.5mm drive will measure just under 3/8 of an inch.  I'm not sure why but many vendors don't publish what thickness the drive should be.

If there is any question, order a 7mm and any small carboard flat can easily make up the difference.  Some will even ship with the 7-9.5 adapter.  Hope that helps!

I tried to install a 750gb drive in my netbook, windows 7 starter,32 bit. Acronis kept leaving more than half the drive as unallocated space. Will this drive do the same thing?

Acronis is an excellent program for cloning one drive to another or making an image for a backup and restore later. However, it has many options. 
If you were just initializing the new drive while attached to the old drive it can assume that you wanted clone the old drive to the new drive on a one to one basis. Or you could have it clone proportionately and Acronis would scale the old drive and partitions onto the new drive.

Regardless just open the Start Button and type Disk Management in the search Window. The Windows Disk Management utility will show the size of the drive and how much has been partitioned and formatted. If there is "unallocated" space, right click on the unallocated space and Create a new partition using the remaining space or any part of it.
The Disk Manager will also let you Extend the C:Drive into the unallocated space if you want a giant C:Drive. You really shouldn't do that, but that's the way Dell, HP, Toshiba, Intel, Microsoft, etc build new computers.

You should have at least two partitions. The first or C:drive can usually be 100GB or less for just Windows and programs. Make the rest of the Drive D:\ for Data and move your user profile to D.
This way if Windows gets corrupted by Microsoft or other malware you can rebuild or reimage C: if you use Acronis properly. Your Data would be safe on the D partition out of harms way. 
Windows is the war zone...
You need to backup the C: drive with Acronis by making a drive image. You need to back up your Data on the D: drive. For most people simple copying an pasting to an external drive is the simplest way to back up user data and the simplest way to recover it if the worst case scenario happens...the drive dies.

Hard drive space is the issue. The 640 will have more free space than the 500. If you are doing a clone from the 640 to the 500 make sure you will have enough free space. I normally would not copy or upgrade to a new drive unless I would have about 50 percent of free space left after the copy, clone or upgrade. If it is a clean install the 500 should work just fine. The WD Blue 500 is a little slow, but may not be a problem due to the old drive being SATA2. WD has utilities that can be downloaded from the WD website that can assist you with the new hard drive.

Question 10

is this campatible  with a macbook pro 3 ?

It should work fine as sata 6gb sata drives are backwards compatible with sata 3gb ports, your system will just operate it at the legacy speed. Hope that helps
