1 out of 5 eggsstarted failing after 1 month of light use

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 5 year warranty.

Cons: Failed only after a month of light use. Bad sectors galore = major quality control issues. If the drive is advertised as enterprise use, 24x7x365 reliability and rigorously tested etc., failures should be unacceptable within at least 2-3 years of use, even with a good warranty. It is the most important thing to have confidence in your storage media...I hope that this is just a bad batch.

I'd rather have a DOA drive than one that I stored important data then dies after a month of light use (with data lost). Oh, and DATA RECOVERY for a 4TB drive is SUPER EXPENSIVE, so that doesn't make things any easier.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello there, we are very sorry to hear that your drive did not function so soon after it was delivered. Our drives are rigorously tested to ensure they are in good working condition before they leave our warehouses. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties. Our goal is to provide world class customer service, and part of that goal in this situation would be to replace your drive, and investigate the root cause for the drive’s premature failure.

5 out of 5 eggsYaY Storage

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Everything I was looking for in a large capacity drive.
4 TB / 7200RPM / 64MB Cache / SATA3

Cons: None as of right now

Other Thoughts: I'm using this drive for storage on a desktop turned server. Running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential.

I noticed people complain about the packaging. I'm not sure if Newegg addressed or what, but I thought the packaging was great. Came in a nifty durable bubble wrap hard drive casing thingy.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Have four of these drives in RAID 10 in a Synology DS412+. Great performance, loads of space, long 5yr warranty, made for NAS environments... have had zero problems.

Cons: None! It's not 5TB or 6TB for the same price? Not SSD speeds? What do you expect.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: High density
Reliability
Power consumption
Performance (Doesn't matter much for my use)

Cons: Cost vs Red
Not quite as nice as the WD RE4's that we use at work but more reasonably priced

Other Thoughts: I have 10 of these in RaidZ2 on FreeBSD 9.2 (as of writing) connected through 3x "LSI 9211-8I" in a Norco 4220.

Xeon E3-1275 v2
Asus P8C-WS
32GB of Crucial ECC
2x 128GB Samsung 840 Pro's for L2ARC, ZIL, root and swap
3x Noctua 120mm fans on the 10 drives and about 140~160 watts of power used at the wall at full load.

cron bi-monthly zpool scrubs with 0 errors so far.

I would not have purchased this many if ZFS was a little more flexible in upgrading without destroying pools. But oh well I have reliable storage for friends and family for the better part of the next decade.

3 out of 5 eggsJust to thank the real reviewers

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: If handled reasonably, these appear to be good drives ... even though they will throw non-recoverable errors at lower temps than WD Red drives (Se can operate at 50 degC, Red up to 70 degC).

Cons: There's a distinct trend of sloppy packaging reported. A WD selling point of this drive is the long factory burn-in. Drives exhibiting battle-scars on delivery? No thanks. I'd rather the drives be well-packed, even if the trip here seems to be via slow boat on a long river in Brazil.

Other Thoughts: That outlet that generally sits on your order for a week, unless you pay extra? Hah. Order on a Saturday, and then try to cancel the order Sunday night. Your drives will be on the truck on Monday morning. No fuss. No muss. Just accept the drives when they arrive ... well packaged, and live on arrival.

1 out of 5 eggsfollow up from earlier review

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The first disk drive that I ever bought was 1 GB, and it cost $1000.
We've come a long way.

6 of 8 drives work.

Cons: 2 of 8 drives are being RMA'd. One fails the WD Diagnostics outright, the other says it was repaired during the long test, but the short test won't complete, and SMART says that it will fail soon.
Both drives were kicked out of my Synology NAS RAID build.

Other Thoughts: My first review was more of a review of Newegg then of the drives themselves. As because of poor packaging 3 out of 8 drives showed visible damage when it arrived. (Think what it takes to visibly damage hard drives.) The drives had been placed in a styrofoam holder and wrapped once with bubble wrap. Then placed in a big box with air bladders.
It took over a month to RMA the drives, and get new ones back. Too bad they haven't learned how to package. Same packaging as the first time, with two wraps of bubble wrap. Yes! Same air bladder problem. Half had deflated, so the drives were bouncing around inside the box. At least there is no visible sign of damage this time.
Over the years I've had a good relationship with newegg, and I would have given them 5 stars even 6 months ago. Now it looks like they have become too big for their britches. I'd give them 3 eggs, but after reading the return policies you have to take away another egg. Too bad. We had a good run

4 out of 5 eggsGood but questionable reliability

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Look 4TB drives are new, and this drive is specifically for NAS purposes, which is why I bought them for my Synology DS2413+. Capacity and value is fantastic, and I am generally, and have been for 20+ years, a bit fan of WD drives.

Cons: Unfortunately, factory testing is just not happening. I'm getting a 1/3 failure of disks on arrival. 2 will work fine, 1 is completely dead. I have gone through 3 sets of disks, with the same results. I have yet to test NewEggs return policy, so can't comment on that, but I have to express concerns over the reliability (day 1) of these disks.

Other Thoughts: Hard drives these days should just work, but it seems quality control is lacking in this case. A number of people are reporting day 1 reliability issues and I can testify to this.

5 out of 5 eggsHuge capacity at good price point

This review is from: Western Digital WD SE WD4000F9YZ 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Since I started shooting video on my DSLR I felt I needed to expand my storage. 2TB was enough to hold a few months worth of raw+jpg from shooting weddings, but not combined with video. 4TB provides a little more breathing room, and perhaps next year I will add a second one. It's decently fast and it's been very reliable for the last 6 months.

Cons: Still a bit pricy, but more affordable compared to the RE version.
