1 out of 5 eggsReally Western Digital.....

Pros: I use these on the enterprise level for our customers; these are typically reliable and are TLER enabled so that RAIDS aren't an issue.

Cons: Bought this drive for my personal use about 2 months ago for my file server. Got some clicking noises and the drive would not provision on my raid controller; DOA. Not a big deal, drives come DOA and this drive was only going to be added into a RAID 5 pool so no hurry to get this in. My fault for waiting so long to install (waited a month, so new egg wont take it back). RMA the drive to western digital and just got the replacement drive back. They send me a 2TB SE drive back..... really...... I paid for the quality of a RE4 drive, which really showed, and I get a lower class SE drive back; could care less about the capacity just as it's the same. I'm pretty sure there isn't a shortage of this drive nor is this line being discontinued anytime soon. Thinking of migrating the entire array to some constellation drives, albeit a pain in the rear, at least Seagate will RMA me apple to apples worth of drives!

Other Thoughts: From Western Digital's Site: The model number you receive from us may vary from the model number that you shipped in, or that is listed on this screen. Due to product availability, we sometimes will make substitution with similar or better products.

Yea, its similar to the fact its a hard drive you shipped back (got that part right at least), but I expect the same CLASS or better CLASS of drive back with same or better capacity. This is a RAID array this is going back in and class of drive does matter when matching against the other disks in the array.

1 out of 5 eggsGarbage

Pros: Nothing right now.

Cons: Unreliable, not durable, sector errors, SMART errors, useless.

Other Thoughts: I bought a pair to add to my current RAID5 setup with three RE4 1TB drives that have been error free for a year. I was able to add the pair to my setup without needing to delete and reinitialize my RAID5. During the migration of the data, one drive had a SMART failure. I decided to stop the migration and delete my RAID5. It was a good thing I backed up all my data before all this. I sent the first one for RMA. I copied my data to the 2nd new drive and then I got some bad sector errors. I am in the processes of RMAing this one as well. I dont know why all of a sudden Im having bad luck with WD. This next round of drive cause errors, Im switching brands. I also dont like how slow newegg's RMA process is.

1 out of 5 eggsD.O.A.

Pros: NONE

Cons: D.O.A. Order 2 just in case I got a bad 1 and both the same, just head clicks for 2 seconds the nothing. Egg RMA right away but it is still irritating WD.

Other Thoughts: Guess I'll start order 3 when it's crucial to get a good 1.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: The drive arrived on time.

Cons: The drive never spun up; just head click. Had to pay to return defective merchandise to Newegg. Maybe in 2 weeks I will have a drive.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, would buy again!

Pros: Appears to be a great hard drive drive, It's replaced my ancient drive, and all my data copied over fairly quickly. The drive is sturdy and appears strong.

Cons: More expensive than desktop series hard drives.

Other Thoughts: Worth paying the money for enterprise series hard drive, would buy it again.

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drives. Why all the complaining?

Pros: Solid and reliable. Good performance for spinning metal. Plays nice in RAID. Prices are reasonable for quality. 5 year warranty with low hassle from WD if you need it.

Cons: Have had a few RE drives fail in infancy over the years but if they survive the first few months they will run well past the warranty period without issue. I see no evidence that this model is any different with respect to QA.

Other Thoughts: I really don't get all of the complaining about WD enterprise drives. In addition to these I have used dozens of
Raptor/Velociraptor, RE 2/3/4 drives over many years and with few exceptions they have all run past the warranty and then some. As for DOA claims, I don't recall ever getting a drive or anything for that matter in 5+ years buying from Newegg that came in DOA. I have on occasion bought something I didn't understand or hadn't done my homework on that didn't work as I expected.

5 out of 5 eggsDrives Passed WD Diagnostics

Pros: The drives were delivered by Newegg's free shipping in 2 days after placing the order, instead of the expected 5-7 days. Newegg packs all HDD shipments very well these days. Each drive is shipped in its own plastic bubble-cushion inside a separate carton, all placed in an exterior shipping box. I was able to use a promotional ten-percent Newegg discount which is why I purchased additional drives.

The drives are well-built on a heavy aluminum chassis. They have a 7200 RPM disk-rotation speed, a 6.0 Gb/s SATA 3.0 data-communication speed (and are backwards compatible to SATA 1.0). The have a 64MB data cache. After receiving two drives which passed the Western Digital "Data Lifeguard" extended test (2-1/2 hours), I purchased four additional drives that also passed the WD extended test.

These drives have a 5-year warranty (!) and are said to be designed for 24/7/365 service.

I received six good WD1003FBYZ drives from Newegg with no infant-mortality failures occurring between me and the factory.

I have always had good warranty customer service for the few WD drives I have had to return, although several years ago a refurbished WD replacement returned under warranty failed in very short order, causing data loss.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: The newer high-density magnetic technology (perpendicular magnetic recording) is a bit more fragile than the older technology, but I have had fewer premature WD failures than with another brand. Time and experience will be the judge.

5 out of 5 eggsPretty

Pros: RE, 64MB, western digital, 1TB. Heavy.

Cons: Nothing to be picky, but it gets clickidy loud when sitting next to it while it read/writes, as this is a enterprise addition HDD I do understand. I knew I needed something that can be beat on with read/writes.

Other Thoughts: When I first got it, I copied files to it from local pc and from over the "1000mbps" network through network drive at the same time, it handled it pretty nice. You aught to hear the clicks it makes when being bashed from read/writes. Wood peckers going crazy LOL. Now only 3 more i can do raid 1+0.

It reads from itself to two write drives, it handled it both drives the write drives with ease.

I basically beat on it for 4-6 hours straight with read/writes. No problems so far.
