5 out of 5 eggsWorks Well for My Needs

Pros: Transfer Speeds over a LAN connection for my system have been acceptable. Using a PC and an Ethernet connection the transfer speeds I get are usually between 7.0 to 8.75 MB/second. As far as I can tell there is not an option for a wireless connection between the router and the drive although you can access the drive by Wi-Fi with other devices once the drive is connected to the router with a cable. Getting files remotely is very slow with my setup, probably because of my internet connection. Downloading files on a good day I get speeds of about 375 Kb/Sec. With upload speeds typically being half of download speeds…

The software was easy to setup, use and provides the options I need. Remote data access is provided with the ability to create different accounts having defined access to the different directories (called shares). It is very easy to change the user rights for the different accounts during or after setup.

The drive comes in an attractive case, and runs coolly with little noise. After over 2 hours of transferring files the drive was warm to the touch and nowhere near what you would call hot. You can set the time interval for having the drive go into sleep mode, or just let it run.

Cons: It may be my computer, but the transfer speed drops below 5 and sometimes 4 MB/sec when several hundred 200 KB files are transferred in a row. This happens with 32 kbps MP3 audio book files when there are around 100 files per disc.

This drive’s only means of transferring data is by its network connection. It would be useful to have an eSATA or USB port on the drive. For me this is not terrible since: huge blocks of data are not being moved in and out of the drive, only one big block in; and my computer has a lot of idle time while I am sleeping or at work.

The only documentation is provided on the drive itself. There was not a CD or anything provided on paper to help with the installation. Not having a quick installation guide provided on what would only take a couple sheets of paper is not right. Just a slip of paper with an internet address would have been better than nothing. This may have been the fault of the people refurbishing the drives, but WD should have some say here since if affects their reputation.

Other Thoughts: This review is limited to my experience with a PC. Several reviews by people having Macs have been very negative about both the software and customer support received. If you have a Mac you might what to look for recent views by Mac owners to see if those issues have been resolved. The original PC software

1 out of 5 eggsBe Wary of these Recertified Drives

Pros: First off, I love Newegg and have purchased often from them and will continue to do so. This review is NOT about Newegg, because NEWEGG DOES EVERYTHING RIGHT! I ordered the drive and it was here in a day, free shipping, taking a chance on a recertified drive.

Cons: The recertification by Western Digital claims that the drive has been checked and tested by WD and it performs as new. However, this is not so, and it was verified by their tech support. The drive had been used by a prior owner and was still registered to that owner, who had configured it with secret passwording. Using the pin to reset the drive to default factory settings, as WD claims did not work, the drive still maintained its prior user settings. Western Digital tech support for the MyBookLive drives (a specific service) is great. I was able to reach them in short order and the technicial took me through all the same setup attempts that I had previously already tried --- the network saw the drive fine, but it had a IP address that could not be accessed regardless of the attempts. This address should have been cleared by resetting the drive to factory defaults. The dashboard of this drive could not access, any attempt yielding an HTTP: 403 FORBIDDEN result that could not in any way be bypassed or eliminated. Western Digital was understanding of this and the drive is going to be replaced by WD at no expense to me. I applaud WD for their service and acknowledgement that a recertified drive, was not really recertified. By the way, the cosmetic condition of this drive could not be distinguished from a brand new one (I have a brand new one that I have been using for 4 months). Cosmetics were perfect, it looked brand new.

Other Thoughts: Fortunately the time I spent, (being a network trained tech myself, and familiar on network installations of all kinds as I own a small computer sales/services business) was not excessive for attempts to install this drive, I knew immediately what the problem and issues with it were. Western Digital understood this once I had a brief conversation with the tech support guy and we proceeded, for his benefit to recheck out the drive. Ultimately he came to the same conclusion that I had, and respectfully is replacing this drive. I have purchased many WD drives and prefer them in my business over the other brands, I have had few problems with any of them and replacement of a faulty drive is seldom needed, but WD has always corrected and replaced anything determined by their tech support to be defective. I will continue to buy WD products.

1 out of 5 eggspaper weight as is

Pros: makes a good paper weight

Cons: Can't do a thing with this unless you buy proprietary software, and subscribe to Smartware, no wonder everyone returns these things!!!!!!!

Other Thoughts: $100 wasted............ I hope I can bust the hard drive out and get an external enclosure to at least make some use of this.
Just wanted a simple drag and drop style to back up video for a HTPC.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Video-o-go, please note that Smartware is a free software solution provided with this device, which is a convenient and easy way to utilize the drive for backing up your system in a few easy steps. Although provided with the device, it is by no means required for utilizing the drive, nor is its use mandatory for backups, as the drive can also be used for storing backups with a 3rd party backup software. You may also simply copy and paste your files to the drive through your LAN, or use Time Machine on a Mac OSX system. For more information on how to use Smartware follow the link below.
Please contact us directly for further technical assistance and clarification to your concerns.
