5 out of 5 eggsGood performance, reliable drive

Pros: Runs cool, fast for a HDD.
Great price from Newegg.

Cons: Nothing so far.

Other Thoughts: This is the second one I have bought and both have been perfectly reliable. The 500GB models that these replaced have also been totally reliable. WD Black Series has earned an excellent reputation over the years. I've never had a bad one.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent HDD

Pros: Quiet and fast. Lots of space.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Acronis True Image WD Edition could not clone my original drive because of block size differences. Suggested that I back up the drive and restore it to the new drive. Plugged in the new drive into a USB port (to make the software work), another hdd into a second USB port to run the backup to and from. And, the original HDD in the laptop. Run the backup. Removed the original HDD from the laptop, put the WD drive into the laptop and left the third drive still attached to the computer via USB. Booted the Acronis True Image disk and did the restore. It worked.

2 out of 5 eggsLasted 2 months

Pros: Worked as advertised -- fast, reliable, etc.

Cons: Had numerous bad sectors -- and they were not already marked.

Other Thoughts: I bought this April 8, 2014--"Open box," but it's still supposed to be a good product. It's now the beginning of June (2 months later). Erratic performance and blue screens caused me to do a chkdsk /r - which found and marked more than 400 bad clusters on the drive. Most were where the OS was, unfortunately; it was bad enough that Windows 7 was still corrupted, so I had to get out my Ubuntu live disk and blank the whole thing, restoring from an HP "restore to factory condition" set of CDs. Time will tell if this is progressive rot, or just a one-time aberration..

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Don G., we apologize for the inconvenience as this is not the intended experience for this product. There are many variables that could affect the drives integrity, and we recommend installing and running our Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows (WinDLG) utility to test and verify the drive’s integrity.

4 out of 5 eggsGood performance. Noisier than stock drive in MBP 13".

Pros: Installed easily into a 2010 13inch MacBook Pro. Have not noticed any decreased battery life and speed has improved slightly over the stock 5400-rpm drive. Clocked at 100 Mb/s read/write (peak, SATA 2 connection).

Cons: Definitely noisier than the stock drive. Whisper is noticeable in background when the room is quiet.

Other Thoughts: Good drive and I'm happy with the purchase.

5 out of 5 eggsQuick & Quiet Drive

Pros: Drive is Quiet despite what others are saying. Hey if it is loud then return it for an exchange because there is definitely something wrong with yours.

2 out of 5 eggsBad in RAID

Pros: Perform well while they work

Cons: Have 5 in a RAID 5 array and I've had 6 fail in the past 3 months. each time having to RMA them to WD. RMA process is nice but I'm tired of the stress. Would not recommend as two of the replacements I got from WD have failed.

Other Thoughts: Sucks paying a ton of money for "server class" drives but times like this I wish I did. These might be considered a step above but this failure rate is beyond unacceptable.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer, we are sorry to hear you had a bad experience with your products. Please note that WD Black hard drives are not recommended for use in RAID environments utilizing Enterprise HBAs and/or expanders and in multi-bay chassis, as they are not designed for, nor tested in, these specific types of RAID applications. For all Business Critical RAID applications, please consider the WD Enterprise or WD Red Hard Drives that are specifically designed with RAID-specific, time-limited error recovery (TLER), are tested extensively in 24x7 RAID applications, and include features like enhanced RAFF technology and thermal extended burn-in testing. 5 out of 5 eggsWD Quality

Pros: Drive is being used as a secondary HDD device in a Dell Precision Mobile Workstation in conjunction with an Msata device as the OS boot drive. WD drive works flawless and fast for file transfers and backups along with streaming movies through my network to apple tv, thrilled with my purchase.

Cons: None....its WDC who is surprised at this
