1 out of 5 eggsJust so you know

Pros: I purchased a 500 gig Western Digital hard drive and tried to clone my old laptop hard drive using the FREE Acronis software option. Well let me tell you..
Oh, the WD hard drive is a GREAT DRIVE and I got a great price from Newegg..

Anyway, the clone part is where everything went wrong. Since you can only put ONE hard drive in a laptop at a time I found a Laptop hard drive USB docking station and thought I had it made till I tried to down load the Acronis Clone software. Since the WD hard drive is in a docking station the Acronis clone software didn't see the drive. So it told me YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE WESTERN DIGITAL hard dvive in your computer to load this software. So I called WD support. they told mt to put the new drive in the laptop and boot the old C driver in the USB HD docking station. No go. It word start to boot the restart over na dover again. So I down load a trial version of the Acronis Backup software. I activated the trial version and tried to clone the new drive. I could not fine a selection for cloning, So I called Acronis for help and in the Con section you can see first had the help I received, Basically you need to buy the full version of Acronis if you have a laptop. If you have a PC then you will probably be okay. But beware the laptop clone.. As it aint happening!! Well for free as advertised. Although they did appreciate my feed back.

Cons: Suresh: Hello! Thank you for contacting Acronis Customer Central. My name is Suresh and I will be glad to assist you. Please allow me 3-4 minutes to review your message. If you already have an existing case number on this issue, please let me know. Otherwise, I will create a new case and provide you the case number.

You: okay

You: version 11.5.38929

You: I do not have a case number

Suresh: No problem. I will create a case.

You: I bought a WD 500 Gig drive

You: I have a laptop

Suresh: Give me 3-4 minutes while I create a case and provide you the case number.

Suresh: Thank you for your patience.

Suresh: The case number for your future reference is 02271790.

Suresh: As I understand, you wanted to know how to clone the drive. Am I correct?

You: I have the new WD drive connected to a USB docking station and plugged in to my laptop. I want to clone the C drive in my laptop to the new WD drive in my USB drive docking station it using Acronis Backup. Is that possible? I have read in the help area that it possible but I do not see a CLONE button feature.

Suresh: Yes, Can you go to console and towards left you will find an option called "Disk management"

You: I see that

Suresh: Click on "Disk management" and select the drive. Right click on drive and select clone.

You: that's not an option

You: I have format, change lable, change letter, mark as active

You: I would be done already if that were an option. Is there something that I need to do first. just installed a trial version because I bought a WD hard drive and tried to down load the clone software but because the WD drive is in a USB drive docking station I was not able to down load the software. So I am now trying to do it with the Acronis Backup

Suresh: As I could see, you have a trial version of Universal restore and with the trial version, cloning is not possible which is a trial version limitation.

You: I only bought a WD drive for that feature

You: It was avertized that I could

You: I have a laptop so it is not possible to put both drives in it at the same time

You: I have tried to boot the C drive in the USB hard drive docking station but it will n ot boot up that way

You: So I can't clone my drive?

Suresh: Yes, that's right. Cloning function is not possible with trial version.

You: Well that should be stated on the WD web site

You: It was the reason I purchased a drive from them

You: Was the promis to be up and runningin no time

You: Instead I have spent hours now I find out no one can help me. WD sent me to Acronis for a solution

You: and Acronis solution is sorry??

Suresh: If we had an option to perform cloning definitely, I would have helped you. Since it's a trial limitation, we couldn't perform. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

You: Okay I am going to Newegg website and letting everyone know about how great WD and Acronis is...

Suresh: For this, you can create a backup and perfo

Other Thoughts: Wasted a lot of time!!!

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: -High reliability
-one of the fastest, if not the fastest 7200 rpm SATA drive
-good price considering the performance and reliability

Cons: -none (see other thoughts)

Other Thoughts: I've purchased probably a dozen of these drives over the past couple of years and have not had one fail in the field yet. Perfect for office/production workstations.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed right outside of the warranty

Pros: Worked fine until it failed

Cons: Within one month of the warranty expiring, the hard drive fails. It's clearly not built to last.

1 out of 5 eggsReceived Bad Drive

Pros: None yet

Cons: Received the drive and it was reading roughly 60GB drive and not 500GB. Not sure if bad shipment or bad stock of the drives. Noticed that others had similar issues. Must have been a bad lot from WD. Requested RMA replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsFavorite type of HDD

Pros: Purchased this as a replacement HDD in my laptop. WD black drives are the best! Overall performance increase compared the older 5400RPM drive that was failing. Made a one to one clone of the drive using a utility and was back up and running in a matter of minutes.

One of the best things about this drive is the 5 year limited warranty on it. If it fails in that timeframe WD will replace it. I have replaced drives through them before and it is a painless process. Just make sure you register it first.

This was on sale when I purchased it so it was a great price point.

Cons: Nothing

Other Thoughts: Nothing

1 out of 5 eggsD.O.A.

Pros: None

Cons: This drive was received defective also. It never worked. It was the second of these drives in a row that was bad. This one was a replacement for the first bad one. Perhaps newegg received a bad batch? Returned for a refund.
