5 out of 5 eggsRunning strong

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: I have had 3 of these running in my Synology NAS for about a year now and have had exactly 0 problems.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Obviously, these are going to be louder, slower, and hotter than an SSD, but when it comes to something like a NAS, reliability is the name of the game and these have done very well so far. (That's not to say that these are particularly loud, slow or hot; they aren't.)

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drives for Synology DS 1815+

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: My primary objectives for ordering the 4TB NAS drives from Newegg were: shipping/handling reviews(what good is a drive if it's not shipped properly), price, and premier membership.
I ordered 3 of these drives and received them the next day (on a 2-3 day delivery promise). The packaging was 'excellent' with encased bubble tube cases and placed individually in custom fitted boxes which were then placed in another larger box (also fitted for the individual boxes. No issues here!
At the same time, I had ordered a Seagate 4TB NAS drive from another store on the East Coast after receiving assurances that their drive would be shipped with adequate packaging. Their drive came in a slightly oversized box with unsecured bubble wrap around the drive (it had come out of the wrap and was loose in the box). Luckily, the drive tested out ok with no internal/external damage.
I decided not to order anything from another site where I have prime membership after seeing photos from customers of drives shipped in large boxes too large with the drives only in static bags bouncing around hitting each other. Also, many of their customers complained of DOA drives (probably due to bad packaging).
The reason I'm obsessing about packaging is because I worked in the drive industry for 15 years and drive packaging and handling were key to quality and reliability.
Newegg knows how to ship these sensitive pieces of equipment. Well Done!
The WD drives themselves are quality units. I noticed in my Synology DS 1815+ that they run at a cool 80 degrees, but the Seagate 4TB NAS runs a little cooler at about 74 degrees. Both drive models have been running 24/7 for the past two weeks with no issues. I'm looking at populating my other 4 slots with WD 5TB drives once I start running low on space.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: If you are ordering NAS drives and want assurance and peace of mind (in case you need to do a return) buy the membership (includes free shipping and returns). Don't skimp on this piece of insurance.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive for NAS

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: - Ordered 5 of these 2 months ago with 0 DOAs so far for RAID6. Works flawlessly.
- I can transfer to my NAS at up to >100MB/s. Compared to the 10MB/s I got with my old NAS, I'm in love.
- I was considering going with the newer 6TB drives, but I've always preferred base-2 drives, 1TB, 2TB, 4TB etc. Idk why, just a preference. Not only that but since I got these on sale, they were quite a bit cheaper per TB than the 6TB drives.

Cons: The only con I can think of I would never take an egg off for because its the problem that all drive manufactures do. In computers, the prefixes are on a 1024 scale, not 1000. 5 x 4TB HDDs in RAID6 would give 12TB of usable space. But do the math and I end up only getting 10.9TB.... Robbed of an entire terabyte of usable space. Not only that but I left it open to another RAID6 5-drive array to double my space eventually, which would mean another terabyte gone.

Other Thoughts: NewEgg... What has happened to the delivery service? I ordered all my parts at once, paid all at once. After watching my packages sit in a warehouse on the tracking website all weekend, I received 4 different packages on Monday, 2 from UPS and 2 from FedEx. The worst part of all was that the DIMMs I absolutely NEEDED to run my build were still in a transit in a seperate 5th package that I needed to wait for. So I had my NAS all built and ready, and got to sit there and stare at it till the DIMMs arrived. That was great, thx.

5 out of 5 eggsUpdate on Drives

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: Great NAS Drive
Quiet
Low Power
Got it on sale for $170 when I bought it
Still alive (Purchased 11/13/13)

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: I have four of these in a three 5.25" bay to four 3.5" bay converter by Silverstone (CFP51-B). They are attached to an LSI 9260CV-8i controller on one breakout cable. When I originally got the drives, I ran all four through WD's extended burn test on their diagnostics tool. All four survived. I then make a RAID 10 array with them. It took about seven and a half days to build the array. Being RAID 10, I get only 8 TB to use as storage. I don't mind though.

These are in my personal computer, so they get turned off when my PC does. I have also moved my PC around quite a few times (On work travels) and these drives have not gone bad in any way.

I plan to build a separate NAS system that will stay at home for 24/7 use. That will probably use ten 6 TB Red Drives (8 in array and 2 for hot spares). I just have to save up for it, but these drives have proven their worth to me.

Also, I would have to note that on this LSI controller, please note that you cannot expand RAID 10 arrays. You can expand RAID 5, 6, 50, or 60 though. So I would buy all of the drives up front to make the array (From different time periods though to make sure they don't all die at the same time).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive for External Enclosures

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive - Bulk

Pros: This is a great drive for use in external enclosures. It runs very cool.

Cons: None when used for the intended purposes. Don't make this your main hard drive inside a computer. For that, use the Western Digital RE series.

Other Thoughts: I usually pair this drive with a Icy Dock MB559U3S-1SB and connect it to the computer using eSATA.
