1 out of 5 eggsBad series - DO NOT USE!!

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Price for the size

Cons: Unreliable

First one was DOA and was RMA'd. Second one worked for about 20 minutes before going offline during my first test backup run. Shut it down and brought it back up and now the drive is only reporting half its size (only showing 1.8TB usable, BIOS of RAID Card does show drive as 4TB).

Ran WD Lifeguard tools - Drive failed quick test with error - Too many bad sectors. Tried a different enclosure and different interfaces (USB, Firewire, eSATA) Will be returning for refund at this point.

Other Thoughts: I'm willing to overlook a DOA drive, they happen. But two in a row? These drives were going to be used in an external NAS enclosure that would have been backing up one of my customer's systems. I am glad I decided to bench test the drives first before deploying them and finding that they are not reliable.

I have been using WD Black, Raptor, and RE drives for a long time and had high hopes for the Red line being a good fit for backup and NAS solutions for my customers. After my testing though, I have lost all trust in the WD Red line and will no longer be using them in any of the backup solutions I use.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Drive

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Been meaning to upgrade four drives in NAS for some time now. These 4gb drives seemed like the ideal solution.

Cons: Failed WD Lifeguard test upon arrival. I read the reviews and knew that these drives had a high rate of failure. Surely this wouldn't happen to me! It did. When I built my NAS, only one of the four 1tb Green drives I bought was bad. The second time around, WD is 0-1. A 60% success rate is pretty awful.

4 out of 5 eggsGood drives, but with all the negative reviews ....

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Good Drives, contrary to the many reviews which site drive failure, they work well so far, they are currently serving as media storage in my home network, External USB enclosure, but that may change soon. They aren't remarkably fast, but I don't expect Warp 9 out of a rowboat.

Cons: None ... Yet .... I've noticed a lot of people have complained about drive failure rates, and what I do find worrisome is that most of the failures seem to occur after the 3 month "honeymoon." Rest assured that if that happens I'll be back here with a flamethrower to flame WD.

Other Thoughts: I like Traffic Lights.....

5 out of 5 eggsI'm happy with it

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Good price, long warranty, red drives are the future of mass storage. I'm not running this in raid yet, but when I fill up my 4TB I will buy another and put them in RAID. I like that it's already designed for that even though that's not how I'm using it yet

Cons: non so far,

5 out of 5 eggsWD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Solid Fast. Zero Problems. Worth the money for a NAS build. I had to replace desktop drives in my RAID with these.

Cons: Pricey.

Other Thoughts: If your in the market to build a home NAS box or have a unit buy the WD Red drives you will thank you self, over saving 10 buxs on desktop drives that will fail on avg. more than a NAS hard drive. I was able to save a very large RAID with these. I'm now seeing even more throughput and less power. Very happy with the drives WILL be buying more in due time.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive failed after 6 months of use

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Reasonable performance per dollar, access times are acceptable in a modern SATA array. Spin up times are.... acceptable... for a 5400rpm drive.

Cons: Drive isn't actually "4TB", drive is only 3.63TB, which is a good 12% off.

Failure at 6 months of use with no warnings and no ability to recover any lost data.

Sorry WD, those two details get you a single star - hard drives are your bread and butter and that's not acceptable for a "NAS Rated" drive.

Drive is slow to spin up on NAS applications where the drive should get long periods of use - wake cycle works "effectively" but should NOT be used in a regular application. Get a Caviar black drive. It's not that its less than 7200rpm - it's that it is not intended for desktop use (even secondary drive).

At 6 months of use the drive suddenly clunked several times (likely head crash) and then a large portion of the drive's contents were gone. Restart the NAS box and the drive is no longer recognized as being formatted. Tried recovery tools, no dice. A format of the drive has yielded a clean slate and no apparent errors. No detected physical damage to the disk and all sectors work fine. Mysterious errors shouldn't happen where suddenly your data vanishes and the drive is fine. EVER.

As this was in process of rebuilding the array (of course, that's when it fails), all of the files on the drive were lost completely.

If the drive shows any other issues once the array is rebuilt I'm RMAing, till then tentatively fingers crossed.

Other Thoughts: All hard drive manufacturers have way too many failure rates now. Seagate and Western Digital used to both be known for rock solid drives, but infant mortality issues are a plague. I have no idea if they just reduced the quality of components or if the higher platter densities are to blame, but this is just getting absurd. I've had way too many drives fail in the past 5 years compared to the previous fifteen.

4 out of 5 eggsSo far so good.

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Do as they should. Go in, partition and format, fill with whatever goodies. Running theses in a server machine(tower). 3 4TB and 1 1TB all went in at once. All 4 drives going strong, no issues detected as of yet. All 4 formatted just fine once i figured out how to do it properly in linux for 2+ TB drives :)

Cons: Nothing really. Only ever had good things to say about WD drives in the 10+ years ive been using them exclusively. Guess i knocked 1 egg off just due to the extra pricing of these, WD used to offer things like intellipower and other NAS systems on their regular drives at fractions of this cost. Now with the color system they can charge a bit more for NAS HDDs and look just fine doing it.

Other Thoughts: Overall love WD drives, ive had a single drive die on me in the last 10 years. I still have some older 320gig HDDs that are still going strong, but have very little use being IDE and so small. So they sit in storage in case i should need them again.

Would recommend these to anyone looking for good reliable home/small business NAS drives. Using mine for media storage mostly, so light duty work i would say.

4 out of 5 eggsWD Red Keeping Me Secure

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: High capacity. High speeds but longer life due to IntelliPower. Works wonderfully with my Drobo 5N!

Cons: Not really a problem, but 5 of these in a Drobo can be LOUD in a quiet room.

Took off one star for the weird story in "Other Thoughts"

Other Thoughts: I had heard lots of reports of DOA, but I needed the large capacity and have been using WD for over 8 years, so I thought I'd take the chance. I bought two (2) of these back in Spring '14 and had them working fine in my Drobo 5N. They even went through a brownout with no problem! (had to fix the Drobo, but not important here).

A Strange thing happened though when the Drobo reported that one had failed and needed to be replaced. I immediately bought 3 more of these and proceeded to scan the bad drive for errors. Turns out, after running all WD Lifeguard tests, the drive was fine, so I formatted it and popped it back in. Now I have a 5-drive, 20TB Drobo 5N sitting nice and healthy on my network.

AWESOME Product WD!!!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat choice if they work.

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: I purchased two of these, and plan on buying more. From a NAS perspective, they really own the game right now. When I got mine, I slow formatted, scanned and did test runs with data (copy 3.6TB worth data to drive and back and check integrity). All was good. Now they sit happily in my NAS, doing what they do best, store data.

Cons: I gave them only 4 stars because of the failure rate. Countless amount of people have had 60%+ DOA failure rate on these drives, so it is not a figure to ignore. Make sure if you are ordering these, that they are not time crucial components. If you need them in a pinch, you have to know that a 60%+ DOA possibility exists. Once they are working, you will be happy.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Idea/ No QC

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: They run cool! They look cool!

Cons: Bought 2, RMA'ed two, had to wait for the second one as they were low on stock, no surprise since they fail a lot!

Other Thoughts: The 2tb reds seem to work fine, I have 6 of them, no problem. The 4tb, not so much. I am afraid to use them.
