5 out of 5 eggsSolid, high quality performers

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: great for RAID arrays
quality
performance
low temps
good warranty (so good, I don't have to use it)
they're Western Digital, and for the past 10-15 years I had almost no problems with this manufacturer, while Seagate drives purchased in the past were at least questionable in quality.

Cons: going up in price?? whatever - they're still worth it.

Other Thoughts: Newegg packaged them very well. I got 4 of them, none was DOA, all of them keep working 24/7 since I got them in November 2013. absolutely zero problems.

highly recommended for prosumer level RAID arrays.

2 out of 5 eggsExcessively High DOA Rate

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: If you can get these drives to last a month, they seem to be okay. Has a lot of the 'NAS' features -- i.e., reliable query response times and compensation for drive vribration

Cons: Super high DOA rate. I was looking to get 4 drives over the course of a couple of month. Two out of the four I bought were DOA.

Other Thoughts: Do NOT accept any fault in these drives on arrival. Even if you notice the temperature is running above average, I would recommend RMA'ing it. WD's quality control must be abysmal for this level of DOA's to occur

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsInexpenisve drive, expensive paperweight

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Not too expensive, high capacity, WD is generally a good manufacturer.

Cons: Bricked up. Bought two of them on sale in March, tested them both then put one into use and shelved the other. The one I used worked for three months then just stopped working. Irretrievably stopped - my system won't even recognize something is plugged in. I plugged the second one in and it was dead a day later, though it at least has let me get in to move docs off.

Other Thoughts: I've used lots of drives in the past 20years and the failures have only been due to justifiable old age, or at least the drives provided me with a year or two of use before slowly, and with warning, dying. These two must be simply defective. I'm willing to pass it off as a fluke but the other comments here tend to tell a similar story - these just are not reliable drives.

Sticking to the WD Green series, I've had good luck with them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mark W, it is unfortunate that you have experienced issues with your Red drives. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties. 5 out of 5 eggsAlways a Great Hardrive

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: I've used every brand of hard drives from all the big manufacturers Western Digital still has my trust when it comes to internal hard drives.

I started using the Red drives years ago when they first came out for NAS and system storage and they are all still working 2/3 and 4TB low cast and reliable.

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: If you want faster drives go with WD black or a SSD's.

5 out of 5 eggsgood drives

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Not sure what are the mixed review about? I have owned two 3TB drives for a year and now three 4TB drives for 3 weeks. All of them have worked flawlessly in the two NAS devices I have. These were well packaged on arrival as well.

Cons: None except for the price. Wish these were cheaper!! The prices never really came down ever since the Thailand flooding all these years back.

4 out of 5 eggsTest Before Using!

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: WD Red: TLER makes my ZFS array happy.
4TB drive gives me twice the capacity in the same number of drive bays and power usage.

Cons: One Drive had bus issues so severe that when it failed it took one of my good drives out of the array with it, nearly lost the pool. Need to test the drives and make sure they work before trying to insert them into my raid array next time!

Other Thoughts: Replacing two WD Green 1TB drives that have seen over 5 years of power-on hours, here's to hoping the Red's are as reliable. Drives that fail, fail early... Burning in my other WD Red drive to see if it holds up. 10 hours into a 19 hour resilver, wish me luck.

3 out of 5 eggs1 out of 5 drives bad, despite excellent packaging

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: 4 TB for a reasonable price. Packaging was excellent. Newegg has some nice little boxes with a bubble wrap sleeve. Then my 5 drives were in a larger box with great bubble wrap. There was no damage at all to the boxes.

Cons: Put 5 of them in RAID 5. Started writing and one drive was bad. SMART reported fine. But quicktest with WD's tool failed in 30 seconds. The extended test quit after too many bad sectors.

Other Thoughts: Install your drives quickly so you can RMA to Newegg rather than get a refurb from WD. I ordered 5 enterprise-level WD drives from Newegg last year and also had 1 in 5 drives fail. I'm not going to comment, but just state the facts.

5 out of 5 eggs6+ months, still running well

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Just a follow up on my review of 10/31/2013 .

The drive is still running strong, with no errors as of today

From what I've read, if you get a good one..it's really good..if you get a bad one...well you have to spin the wheel of data loss and hope you have been imaging the drive on a regular basis if it lands on "fatal error"

Cons: No coupon for a free trip to CES/Vegas

Other Thoughts: I'm managed to retain most of my computer files from as far back as a mac + with a serial based disk drive ( that was 20MEGABYTES for $1299. I'd love to toss my collection of 47GB full height 14 pound segates, but I like the noise they make when they spin up.

hey IBM...where is that pixie dust gel cube 10GTB storage device.....>?

In the meantime, drives are cheap and data is expensive..so keep backups!

5 out of 5 eggsI FINALLY LEARNED TO READ INSTRUCTIONS

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Reliability. I am more a computer forensics expert than a hardware expert but used to rush through a build because I was eager to get to the finish line. However, and no disrespect to anyone who has had these issues, many that I read I used to have when not carefully reading the instructions, making sure of compatibility, making extra certain that the most current BIOS was installed, a much easier task with the Asus newer MOBOS with EZ Update, and generally checking each stop. I counted, trying to be accurate, how many WD Red drives I have purchased as I tend to hoard when the prices reach a low level, and I stopped counting at 100 and I have never had one arrive DOA, nor a MOBO, but I check them as the factory suggests before loading everything onto them. Perhaps it comes from age and having fried many a part after ignoring exclamation marks...

Cons: I felt, to be fair, I had to come up with one and that would be speed. However, these are not intended to be high performance, speedy drives. That is for the new fast SSDs. The manufacturer also seems to monitor these reviews and says the right things.

Other Thoughts: I think I've covered most in my overly chatty comments above. It has been hard for me to get away from my habit of loading my main system with hard drives and using NAS devices more but it sure is easier than having six boxes all over the place.
