5 out of 5 eggsGood luck with my drives

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Reliable, quick, good RAID features

Cons: none

Other Thoughts: I see some of the negative reviews but my (4) 4TB Reds have run without issues for 24/7 in my NAS for 8-9 months. It could be that 1% of folks with DOA drives are much more likely to write a bad review than a happy customer like myself who had zero problems, I may buy 10+ hard drives each year, all WD I don't know that I have had more than one bad drive in the last 20 years. I out grow hard drives, but I still have 20-30 WD HD I retired when they were still in good health.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: It's a large capacity drive.

Cons: I ordered 4 and one was DOA

Other Thoughts: Test each and every drive before you deploy them!

5 out of 5 eggsGood Drive - Quiet - Low Temp

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Low temps, quiet, reliable so far (6 months), price was good for the size, works well in my NAS as it should, access times are what I expected.

Cons: Really quite happy so far. As always who wouldn't mind the access times to be faster.

4 out of 5 eggsUpdate from 4/26/2014 3:08:44 AM

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: This is an update from my 4/26 review. My NAS cluster is humming along smoothe. I have a Hitachi Ultrastar 2TB, a WD RED 2TB and a WD RED 4TB in a Ubuntu & DRBD configuration. So raw capacity of the cluster is effectively 8TB in an active/passive configuration.

Never had a problem with the Ultrastars; Hitachi doesn't even KNOW my name (knock on wood).

WD does know who I am but nonetheless I am pleased with how I got here.

The WD RED drives perform well and to my satisfaction. There is a slight performance hit with the REDs compared to the Ultrastar but this was expected; my clients do not see it at all and the power drain is much less. The Ultrastars are much more expensive.

Cons: Other people have had worse situations than I have had so hopefully as the product quality and supply chain matures WD enters into the sweet spot with these drives.

Other Thoughts: 4 eggs still warranted as far as I am concerned to show some solidarity to the community of RED users out there.

My suggestion to everyone is that if you get a drive that is DOA, use WDC's RMA process immediately. This way you take at least one middle-man out of the supply chain in terms of getting your replacement.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid, high quality performers

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: great for RAID arrays
quality
performance
low temps
good warranty (so good, I don't have to use it)
they're Western Digital, and for the past 10-15 years I had almost no problems with this manufacturer, while Seagate drives purchased in the past were at least questionable in quality.

Cons: going up in price?? whatever - they're still worth it.

Other Thoughts: Newegg packaged them very well. I got 4 of them, none was DOA, all of them keep working 24/7 since I got them in November 2013. absolutely zero problems.

highly recommended for prosumer level RAID arrays.

2 out of 5 eggsExcessively High DOA Rate

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: If you can get these drives to last a month, they seem to be okay. Has a lot of the 'NAS' features -- i.e., reliable query response times and compensation for drive vribration

Cons: Super high DOA rate. I was looking to get 4 drives over the course of a couple of month. Two out of the four I bought were DOA.

Other Thoughts: Do NOT accept any fault in these drives on arrival. Even if you notice the temperature is running above average, I would recommend RMA'ing it. WD's quality control must be abysmal for this level of DOA's to occur

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Murad K., your feedback on the WD Red is appreciated and we regret discovering the concerns you are currently having with your device. All Western Digital products are tested and determined to meet WDs stringent quality standards before they are shipped to our resellers. 1 out of 5 eggsInexpenisve drive, expensive paperweight

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Not too expensive, high capacity, WD is generally a good manufacturer.

Cons: Bricked up. Bought two of them on sale in March, tested them both then put one into use and shelved the other. The one I used worked for three months then just stopped working. Irretrievably stopped - my system won't even recognize something is plugged in. I plugged the second one in and it was dead a day later, though it at least has let me get in to move docs off.

Other Thoughts: I've used lots of drives in the past 20years and the failures have only been due to justifiable old age, or at least the drives provided me with a year or two of use before slowly, and with warning, dying. These two must be simply defective. I'm willing to pass it off as a fluke but the other comments here tend to tell a similar story - these just are not reliable drives.

Sticking to the WD Green series, I've had good luck with them.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Mark W, it is unfortunate that you have experienced issues with your Red drives. We understand your situation and will gladly replace your in-warranty drive, as we stand by our products and their associated warranties. 5 out of 5 eggsAlways a Great Hardrive

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: I've used every brand of hard drives from all the big manufacturers Western Digital still has my trust when it comes to internal hard drives.

I started using the Red drives years ago when they first came out for NAS and system storage and they are all still working 2/3 and 4TB low cast and reliable.

Cons: None...

Other Thoughts: If you want faster drives go with WD black or a SSD's.
