4 out of 5 eggsGreat choice if they work.

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: I purchased two of these, and plan on buying more. From a NAS perspective, they really own the game right now. When I got mine, I slow formatted, scanned and did test runs with data (copy 3.6TB worth data to drive and back and check integrity). All was good. Now they sit happily in my NAS, doing what they do best, store data.

Cons: I gave them only 4 stars because of the failure rate. Countless amount of people have had 60%+ DOA failure rate on these drives, so it is not a figure to ignore. Make sure if you are ordering these, that they are not time crucial components. If you need them in a pinch, you have to know that a 60%+ DOA possibility exists. Once they are working, you will be happy.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Idea/ No QC

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: They run cool! They look cool!

Cons: Bought 2, RMA'ed two, had to wait for the second one as they were low on stock, no surprise since they fail a lot!

Other Thoughts: The 2tb reds seem to work fine, I have 6 of them, no problem. The 4tb, not so much. I am afraid to use them.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive for back up storage, and NAS

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Ordered 5 of these over two orders, got 2, then 3. Currently only 2 of them are in operation, but working great. NONE were DOA. Used WD Data Lifeguard tools to test each one indiviually to ensure no issues.

Cons: None thus far...

Other Thoughts: I jumped the gun on these a bit. I have digitized just about ALL of my entire 300+ DVD and 100+ Blu Ray collection. Using .mkv format, totally uncompressed, files are HUGE!! 25-40 gigs per Blu Ray. Curently the files are residing on a bunch of 2 TB drives, need to migrate them to these for backup. These drives used for backup of photos and home video storage and back up.

End game is to have a rack mountable storgae server built for a network rack in my basement. Server not even built or ordered yet, will be running 5-8 of these drives fro hot swap bays on thr server, likely running ZFS.

5 out of 5 eggsAll 4 drives ordered running cool and silent with no issues

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Runs cool and silent. Inside the box, the drives were packaged unusually well in a protective cocoon of thick-plastic bubble wrapping.

Cons: "Red" drives are not as fast as the "Black" series but theoretically run cooler and more reliable.

Other Thoughts: Installed all 4 drives in a Lenovo ix4-300d NAS unit. Waited 48 hours for the RAID-5 striping to complete been running smoothly ever since. Was worried about the bad reviews regarding initial reliability but found no issues at all.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with DirecTV DVR

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: .

Cons: .

Other Thoughts: Popped this in a Thermaltake ST0005U-R eSATA Docking Station. (I formatted it first - I think NTFS.) Then I attached it to my new DirecTV HR44 Genie DVR and crossed my fingers. Success! 4 terabytes of DVR storage! (Well, maybe something like 3.6 after the format.) It's been going flawlessly for over a week, so if you're wondering if this will work with the latest DirecTV DVRs - my experience says yowzah!

5 out of 5 eggsNot the only choice for NAS but the best

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: Very high and stable transfert rate approx. 125 mo/s which is amazing for low consumption and low heat hard drives. The most stable hardware too, installing 4 of these together in a NAS box is wonderful as they still perform the same as they were in single enclosure, their self vibrations don't affect each others.

Cons: Low access time which is just normal considering the stability, the bandwidth and the low heat output those hard drives have.

Other Thoughts: The RED drives are very good, if you want drives more focused on performance get BLACK drives but 125 Mo/s on RED drives have plenty of bandwidth for any media playback or transfert/streaming process.

1 out of 5 eggsHorrible WD made me look like a real JERK

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: None

Cons: 4 drives were ordered to throw in a Sata/SAS JBOD. One drive was DOA, one drive Failed at format, one drive failed during data migration. Right now we are down to one drive, taking them all back. This is ridiculous. Who makes drives that fail that quickly?

Other Thoughts: I am going to try the HGST drives and see if they are any better, I know it is now Western Digital, but I hope they kept the NAS manufacturing plant.

2 out of 5 eggsHorrific initial fail rate

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: When you finally get one that works it seems like a good drive. Quiet, low power. Decent.

Cons: Getting one that works. I'm at a 66.7% failure rate, bought two for my Synology 2-bay NAS. Out of the box one refused to spin up, made a terrible noise. RMA'd that one, waited till the replacement came before installing in the NAS. Replacement spun up fine, formatted then stuck in the NAS. Got it all setup, data copied, and then decided to run the SMART test just to be sure. Guess what, one failed SMART. Brand new disks should not be failing SMART. I'm wiping it now and dropping it in the mail tomorrow for another RMA.

Other Thoughts: I don't know what's up with WD's QA process, if they even have one. I read the reviews before buying but the drive was on sale for a decent price and I figured WD had a good reputation, maybe they had sorted some of the problems. Nope.

So yeah... roll the dice if you dare. If you can get a working one they seem really decent. Just how many you have to mail back first.

Side note, the pair I got were already patched for the load cycle count issue. So that was nice I guess.

1 out of 5 eggsBad Sectors on Arrival

This review is from: WD Red WD40EFRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" NAS Internal Hard Drive -Bulk

Pros: None

Cons: Bad Sectors on Arrival
Buyer pays return shipping on defective items. Really???

Other Thoughts: I had real high hopes for this drive. I still do, provided I get a replacement that isn't a refurb and passes diagnostics. I am a bit dissappointed that NewEgg is making me pay for return shipping for a defective product. That just doesn't sit right with me. I could move forward with RMA replacement from WD but that would almost guarantee that I would receive a refurb.

Anyone know if I do get a refurb if I am still covered by the original 3yr warranty of the original drive? I've owned the drive less than 2 days, all of which was spent running chkdsk /R, twice just to make sure.
