1 out of 5 eggsSecond Drive Failure

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Large Storage Capacity, SATA 3.0 Interface

Cons: Short Life Span

Other Thoughts: I first bought this drive last fall, and made the mistake of not performing a burn in test. After moving 2 TB of my data over to it, it crashed. Newegg replaced the hard drive with the same model. After only running for 54 hours via S.M.A.R.T info it already had meat the threshold for bad/reallocated sectors that now I am getting disk failure messages constantly. It should be noted that this drive is in an well ventilated case with 7 other disk of varying age. I have purchased and swapped hard drives many times over the years and this is my first real consistent case of repeat failure. I will be contacting WD Support for replacement as it is past the 30 day window. However if purchasing be sure to validate the drive upon arrival.

4 out of 5 eggsWaiting to know for sure.

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Caught these drives on sale, I ordered two of them to backup media files.

Decent price for a lot of space. Even for a "green" drive the performance wasn't bad, surface tests averaged about 100MB/sec for most of the testing. Faster than I expect out of a low power drive.

Cons: Upon receipt of the drives I did a DBAN run to ensure they were working properly.

One failed about three hours in and wouldn't POST on any computer after than. The other passed and seems to be working properly.

Other Thoughts: I've seen many people complain about drives being DOA, I've order dozens and never gotten a bad one. Packaging was good and not damaged in any way. Drive must have just been a dud, I do not blame Newegg in any way for this.

Replacement should be on the way, I will run surface scans for a few days when it gets here to ensure it is working properly before putting it in to use.

1 out of 5 eggsIts junk

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: It makes a great paper weight

Cons: First was DOA. Spent an extra $15 to get another, second was DOA after one day.

Other Thoughts: Been a WD customer for over a decade, not no more!

2 out of 5 eggsExpected A Lot More

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Reputable manufacturer.
Highest amount of storage for the lowest price as of the day I'm writing this review.
Green drives are very quiet, and despite what some people think, can be quite sturdy and reliable.

Cons: DOA (Defective On Arrival). Allow me to explain what I mean. The drive did work for a few hours, but disappears from Windows altogether at seemingly random intervals. I was able to copy files to it and run a benchmark on it.

This means that this particular drive I received, along with many other defective drives of this same model, are capable of passing a benchmarking test at the factory as if they are fully working, but were actually defective. WD may want to do a silent recall and double check this model.

As another reviewer said, a defective drive adds about ten seconds to boot times since the motherboard knows something is plugged in but can't recognize the device. This usually only happens to old hard drives that are about to die.

Other Thoughts: Some people are getting functional drives, some people like me are getting the defective ones. Be wary of buying this particular model. I've got a lot of faith in WD and I won't think twice about buying from them again. Just have to be a bit more careful about which drives I get from them.

5 out of 5 eggsQuiet fast drives, using in NAS

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Quiet spin up, they seem to idle down and wake up appropriately. Good transfer speeds in my NAS configured for RAID 1.

Cons: None.

3 out of 5 eggsCheap... Unreliable

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap large storage... Runs cooler than regular drive..

Cons: Purchased two of these together... After one and a half years, one of the drives is failing...

Other Thoughts: Prior to purchasing these, I ran two 2 TB WD Green drives for over three years without issues. I ignored the negative reviews about this drive based on my prior experience, and now I'm kicking myself for it.

If you value your data, do yourself a favor and don't purchase these.

4 out of 5 eggsWD ok, but same usual annoyances

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: 32.5 USD per TB as of today, the obvious features such as large 4 TB cap, Sata III speed

Cons: the legendary "higher-than-usal" WD HDD temp, the threat of short lifespan with frequent head parking

Other Thoughts: - The big Pro is to upgrade from Sata II to III, the downgrade from 7200 to 5400 rpms not being noticeable, and I know b/c I have both Sata III Blue WD10EZEX and this Green WD40EZRX in the same PC. However, I boot from SSD, so ...
- The temp is higher than other brands (seagate, samsung), + 10 C as usual with WD, but not in the red as with my old bad Caviar WD2500KS which had to retire too early and now prevents my lottery tickets to fly away from my desk.
- What a stupid thing this DOS bootable firmware flash with wdidle3 to prevent the frequent head parking, yet easy to do but very frustrating. 30+ years later, we still need to not only fix/hack poor quality products but use DOS bootable stuff in the process, the only progress being from floppy to usb, unbelievable!

3 out of 5 eggs25% Failure Rate

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: The drives were certainly inexpensive and their performance meets my expectations.

Cons: I purchased four of these drives to use in a RAID 5 configuration. Less than two weeks into operation, one of the four drives completely failed. It clicks but is no longer recognized by the controller card. Now I will have to keep my fingers crossed that I don't lose another drive before the RMA replacement arrives.

Other Thoughts: It seems that several others here have indicated a high DOA rate. If you are going to use these in a RAID, I would recommend getting an extra for use as a hot spare.

3 out of 5 eggsGood price if they work

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Great price after getting cash back from my credit card, and assuming I get EggPoints

Cons: 2 out of the 6 were DOA. Normally I wouldn't blame the seller for this, but apparently Newegg no longer provides you with a return label if you receive a faulty product. Luckily I was able to sign up for the trial of Newegg premier in order to get free return shipping. If I hadn't, this wouldn't have been a deal at all. One month later and I'm still waiting for the replacements...
