3 out of 5 eggsGood price if they work

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Great price after getting cash back from my credit card, and assuming I get EggPoints

Cons: 2 out of the 6 were DOA. Normally I wouldn't blame the seller for this, but apparently Newegg no longer provides you with a return label if you receive a faulty product. Luckily I was able to sign up for the trial of Newegg premier in order to get free return shipping. If I hadn't, this wouldn't have been a deal at all. One month later and I'm still waiting for the replacements...

5 out of 5 eggsExceded Expectations

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: This is an excellent product for what it is: an economic high volume barebones hard drive. If that is your expectation you will be happy. I was worried after reading all the other articles that the head parking issue was going to be a big deal to bypass. It wasn't. I had 4 hours to get it done and installed because it was on my Home Theater PC which had to be connected back in to record my TV shows. I was done and had it back online within that 4 hours (including life interuptions). I also didn't have any problems with Win 7 64 recognizing it and adding it with full volume (minus the 40 gigs of overhead).

Cons: The only two cons is that 5400 is not 7200 rpms and having to bypass the head parking issue. In fairness, neither of these is a Newegg issue so I did not markdown on eggs. Also IMHO paying $30 - $40 dollars less for an extra Tarabyte is worth the headache of downloading and using WDidle3 (see other posts for how to do this). As far as the 5400 rpms, I use this for Media Serving on my HTPC and I don't notice hardly any lag, with the exception of initially booting up.

Other Thoughts: You get exactly what you pay for.

1 out of 5 eggsmay be DOA

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Looks legit.

Cons: takes 10 secs every time for my system to recognize the disk. Couldn't be formated either to 2G or 4G. There is clicking sound irregularly.

Other Thoughts: tried: upgrading bios, re-installing os. enabling UEFI, converting to MBR or GPT, tried a variety of things with it. no luck at all.

Good thing is i am good at diskpart now.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: I have several WD Green Drives, they are not as slow as suggested, they are great for storage. I have never had one fail. I've had WD Blue and WD Black drives fail, but never a Green. Never purchased a WD Red so no experience there. I highly reccomend the WD Green Drives, as long as you are using them for what they are intended for.

Cons: If you run them 24/7 I would suggest a reboot every couple of days.

1 out of 5 eggsHigh DOA Rate

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Capacity

Cons: Very high DOA rate

Other Thoughts: Bought 4 for an array, 1DOA
Bought 5 for another, 2 DOA
3 out of 9 drives DOA is just sad... I've been using WD for years, about to jump ship...

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap

Cons: DOA

Other Thoughts: I bought 5 of these drives. 4 seem okay. The last one, I plugged into the system, seemed to work fine for a few minutes. Then it started seeking continuously. Not it doesn't even show up in the BIOS now.

I went through a lot of trouble in acquiring these drives on BlackFriday. Terrible end to end experience overall.

4 out of 5 eggsFollow Up to Prior Review

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: See Prior Review

Cons: Head Parking.

By default this drive parks it's heads every 8-seconds. That's a lot of wear and tear on the drive. (This feature was pointed out in another review).

In order to save your drive you need to change the firmware settings using "wdidle.exe" from Western Digital (search Google for it).

The problem is that running the program MUST be done in DOS!

Now ever since Windows Vista the reality is that there is NO DOS. Booting to the command line does not count.

So what to do? The Ultimate Boot CD does not allow you access to external programs (unless I missed something). I could have split the .iso and add my stuff to it, but I was too lazy.

Search Google for "How to Make a MS-DOS Bootable Flash Drive" and use the "hpflash1.zip" flash utility. It works with ALL USB sticks. Copy WDIDLE3 to it.

Boot from your USB and run WDIDLE3 /d to disable the timer (and save the drives life span)

Jim

4 out of 5 eggs7200 vs.5400 RPM

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Western Digital, Good price, 4-Tb.

Cons: 5400 RPM.
If you watch the videos WD makes a major push for why you don't really need a 7200 RPM drive. What they say about data throughput is correct, and the amount of data being transferred through each revolution is also correct.

BUT! What they don't say is that even with a higher throughput, the difference between 5400 and 7200 RPMs makes a difference, especially with large file such as movies. There is a lag.

Other Thoughts: Don't expect to get 4-Tb out of the drive. Using the standard window formatting, expect to lose approx. 40-Gb in overhead with a 4096 sector and cluster size.

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Great drive and speed for such a large drive. Price (got mine on sale though)

Cons: None as of yet, had this drive for just barely over a year

Other Thoughts: Was never really interested in any personal computer drives larger than 2TB due to issues with friends having failed drives on the larger ones, never seemed to have any problem with 2TB or less drives. This hasn't had any issues at all
