5 out of 5 eggsGood for NAS unit

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Got two of these for a qnap NAS unit for raid 1. I've had several power outages before I got a ups and never had any issues with data corruption or disk spin up.

I haven't used them as an OS drive (nor would I) but I am about to order two more of these to expand my raid array to 4 disks in a DIY NAS.

Cons: None. When I bought these they were almost twice the price as they are now. If these newer ones are as solid they're a good value.

Other Thoughts: Na

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible drive

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: None

Cons: Bought 4 of these in April. 1 died within a week of installation. It took almost 3 months to get WD to replace it after they had received it. Last week (Nov) the replacement I received and two other disks died. I dread the wait for WD's support to get replacements out, and with this high a failure rate, I am almost afraid to use them again. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap Drive - Failed Less than 2 weeks

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Thought this would be a good deal for the storage vs the price. I have a couple of WD Green drives in the 1 and 2 TB flavors and they have given me no problems. Bought this drive and it went belly up in less than 2 weeks. So I guess this wasn't such a great deal after all.

Cons: Then on top of it, I paid 10 bucks for a warranty that I guess only does you any good if you are outside of the mfg warranty, and since I was busy and couldn't get the RMA process soon enough, I am now out of luck as far as Newegg is concerned. Don't cry to us, go talk to the manufacturer of this poor quality drive we sold you. Nice customer service guys. Thanks.

Other Thoughts: They advertise data recovery service coverage for 14.99, but I am glad I didn't buy it as there would probably be some hidden trick to getting them to honor it. I fear what it will cost to have my drive data recovered through one of the sub-contracted data companies that WD advertises on their warranty portal. Overall I will by a stinking Hitachi Deathstar before I buy another WD drive after this experience. Terrible quality products and obviously Newegg is aware they are setup to tell you to take off when you want some remediation for a poor quality product. Just awesome.

2 out of 5 eggsDead in 10 Months

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Very good GB/$
Very quiet

Cons: Dead after just 10 months of non-intensive backup storage and only 25% full. This kind of makes it impractical to use as a single drive as backing up 3TB is pretty tedious.

3 out of 5 eggsGood drive, not really quiet

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Large capacity, inexpensive, works well enough.

Cons: Vibration and noise.

Other Thoughts: I have bad luck with WD drives. These are supposed to be quiet drives so I gave it a try, but the vibration is high enough to shake the whole case. It'd be fine for office use, but not for a quiet PC. The speed and temperatures are good, but it will probably be swapped out for a quieter drive or SSD.

2 out of 5 eggsNot so great

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Decent speed and size for price

Cons: Died after having it only for 6 months, it was used in an external case that was off most of the time. It was only used for backup.

Other Thoughts: I understand all hard drives will die eventually but after only 6 months, really? I'm still using a IDE 250 WD from forever ago and still runs fine.

4 out of 5 eggsGood so far

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: The day I received it I used western digital data lifeguard diagnostics and conducted a thorough read test of every sector of the 4GB HD which took around 10-11 hours to complete and finished with no errors. Immediately moved over 800 GB (only took around an hour) and so far so good. However, I've only owned a few days.

Cons: None so far but only owned it a few days.

Other Thoughts: In my opinion, I choose WD green because I have had really good success with them in terms of failure rate. Make sure you designate the hard drive to be a GUID Partition Table (GPT) instead of MBR so you can put all 4GB into one partition. MBR limits your partitions to 2GB.

1 out of 5 eggs50% Failure Rate

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Pretty Good Price for 4TB. Good Specs

Cons: Only shows up as 3.6TB and it's not an SSD. First one I ordered, bad. Got replacement been running good for awhile. Just ordered 3 more. 1 of the 3 was bad. 2 out of 4 or 50% DOA rate. I can't say I ever remember having trouble from WD drives. This is flat out unacceptable.

Other Thoughts: Why isn't closer to 4TB, these aren't bags of chips that are 50% air.

4 out of 5 eggsLots of space

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: I use this drive for nightly network backups so I can't really speak for its interactive performance. It provides a lot of space for very little cash, though. It's a solid performer.

Cons: After having used SSDs and laptop drives in my tower case for the past few years, I've gotten used to drives that are silent or super quiet. This drive is of course a little noisier, and when it's seated juuust right in the drive cage, it creates a nasty buzzing sound. That's probably the fault of the drive cage, though.

Other Thoughts: When they say "bulk bare drive", they mean it! It's literally a bare drive in a padded anti-static bag. Make sure you have mounting hardware and cables of your own.

4 out of 5 eggs90-days 24/7 so-far-so-good

This review is from: WD Green WD40EZRX 4TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - Bulk Bare Drive

Pros: Runs cool
Installs easily

Cons: Price- which hasn't fallen nearly as fast as warranty lengths.
Warranty- depressingly diminished, unlike pricing.

Other Thoughts: I caught it for a good price, and it seems to be working well in my UnRAID server, although by now, these drives' pricing should have fallen much farther.
