2 out of 5 eggsDon't use it to store important data

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Small, quiet, looks pretty.

Cons: Loses connectivity to the network making it completely useless. There is no fix!

Other Thoughts: This thing will go to sleep and lose all connection to the network. You will have to reboot it to get it to show up and use again. I had it for 7 months before it finally acted up.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey there Julius,
Your feedback on the My Cloud is appreciated and we thank you for bringing these concerns to our attention.
In an attempt address your concerns and resolve the unexpected behavior with your drive, we advise checking for a firmware update, disabling the Power Save feature, and then assign a Static IP to the drive.

1 out of 5 eggsDO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: None

Cons: Too many to list!
Unreliable!
SLOW!
Random Disconnects!
Incompatible with Time Machine!
Vendor blames customer setups!
Did I already say SLOOOOOOOOW!

Other Thoughts: DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT.

I have had this product for months, upgraded to the latest firmware, and followed ALL recommendations from WD. The bottom line is that the vendor should be sued for releasing such a bug-filled and unreliable product

It does NOT work as advertised. I never use it anymore.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Brian,
It is unfortunate to hear about these concerns and we thank you for bringing your experience with the My Cloud drive to our attention.
As test to determine if performance between the My Cloud and your connected devices can be improved please try connecting your computer and drive directly to the back of a router via Ethernet and disable wireless on the computer. Please visit the following link for best practices on how to optimize performance with the My Cloud in your LAN.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://bit.ly/1yK5sIS

Loss of connectivity between the router and drive may be resolved by assigning a Static IP to the My Cloud.
“How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive with a Static IP”: http://bit.ly/1ygX5ET

To try and address Time Machine issues between the drive and your Mac computer we have provided some troubleshooting steps below:
Turn off Time Machine
Navigate to the Time Machine Backup Share and either rename the Sparsebundle file something other than your computer's name or delete the file (Deletion will erase the backup permanently).
Check your computer's name and verify that it does not contain any special characters: http://bit.ly/1rrZRQ7
Run Disk Permissions repair on the internal disk until there are no more errors; this may take multiple attempts: http://bit.ly/1FKSv4T
Reboot your computer and the My Cloud drive.
Start a new Time Machine backup to the My Cloud: http://bit.ly/1pFDU0p

We would like to follow up with the above recommendations with you directly and ensure your experience is addressed with a positive outcome. Please contact our team by phone or email below and mention your Newegg review.

1 out of 5 eggsWorse product I've ever purchased

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: Worse product I've ever purchased, unfortunately I cannot return it. The interface is horrid & very problematic. What would ordinarily take several minutes to download on a normal drive takes several hours (my full back-up takes 2 days), even if its directly connected to your computer. Because of this device & another WD HDD I had, I will never buy WD products again.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear william a.,
Sorry to hear about what you are currently experiencing with the My Cloud drive, as this is not the intended or typical experience with the device.
In an attempt to address your concerns, please verify that you have the latest firmware update applied to your device, as firmware updates are released to improve the customer experience, and add compatibility or features to the device’s functionality. You can check for the latest update by visiting the following link.
http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10440

If you are wirelessly connected to your router, or if the My Cloud and computer are not connected directly to the back of the router’s ports, please consider disabling wireless and hard-wiring your computer to the router via Ethernet to see if the performance improves. When connecting to a network with multiple devices, performance will only be as fast as the slowest interface used between these devices; be it wireless or a connection that is not gigabit. The link below has more information on best practices to optimize performance with the My Cloud on your LAN.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

When running an initial backup from your computer to the My Cloud, it may take longer than expected; however, subsequent backups will not take as long as they are done on an incremental basis, only looking for new or modified files from when the last backup completed.
If you would like assistance from our My Cloud Support Team directly, we are happy to work with you on your concerns and attempt to resolve them with a positive resolution. We can be reached via email or phone below and when you speak with our staff, be sure to reference your Newegg review.

2 out of 5 eggsSooo Slooow...

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Attractive
Very Low Price
Small Form Factor
Runs Cool
USB-3 Port can be used with a hub to control up to 6 hard drives.
Remote access over internet.

Cons: Everything happens so slowly as to render the device useless.
Software is lacking necessary features.

Other Thoughts: I can't say it often enough, this NAS is between 5 and 10 times slower than the 6 year old Maxtor Shared Storage 2 it was supposed to replace. When I right clicked a folder and clicked on properties, it took 10 minutes for the drive to report there was 40GB of data. Click on a folder and wait 20 seconds for it to open. Transfer rates crawl along at 500KB/S on my gigabit network with all new routers, switches, and cabling. Since the device is technically 'working', can I even send it back? Bummer

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
Your feedback on the My Cloud experience is appreciated.
We have included a link below for ways to try and improve performance with the My Cloud by optimizing the connection between devices on your LAN.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

We recommend verifying that you have the latest firmware update for the My Cloud installed as this may provide assistance in improving the performance of the unit. Please visit the following link on how to check your version and if need be update it.
“Product update for WD My Cloud”: http://www.wd.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfmycloud_s

If the concerns persist you will want to consider backing up the configuration of your device through the Dashboard then perform a “System Restore” to rule out any possible software concerns related to the OS; this will not affect the data stored on the internal disk.

1 out of 5 eggsSeriously flawed connectability

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Excellent features. Perfect size. Works great when is actually connects. WD drive inside

Cons: As Neil H indicates it seems to be incapable of staying connected to the network for more than a few hours or sometimes minutes.

Other Thoughts: Even on WD’s own forums there are dozens of complaints about this. WD has recommend in other review responses to set it a static IP. I tried that but it only works for a few hours at best. When it drops off the network not even WD discovery or the dashboard can find it again. Power cycling the device works about 75% of the time. I am rather disappointed as I have used WD products for years. I have a mybook world that has performed flawlessly for years but is simply too small for my current needs. That is a 5 egg product so I had high hopes for this new version. However, I would recommend avoiding this product until WD is able to correct the connection issue. If they are able to do that it will go to 4 or 5 eggs.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Mike,
We appreciate your feedback and understand your concerns relating to the loss of connectivity to the My Cloud.
Suggested troubleshooting for this type of issue would be to perform a “System Restore” of the OS, disable the power save feature, and then reassign a Static IP to the drive.
“How to reset a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10432

“How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive with a Static IP”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11384

We would like the opportunity to work with you directly to investigate these symptoms and determine the root cause of the issue you are experiencing. So we can follow-up with the outcome of the above recommendations, please contact us by phone or email below and reference this Newegg review when you speak with our My Cloud Staff.

4 out of 5 eggsVery useful device

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Ease of setup--plug it in to the LAN, navigate to the webpage in the instructions, and it just works. Backs up the data on the machines automatically, and sharing media is drag-and-drop simple.

It looks nice with the clean lines and minimal interruptions of the case.

Cons: There's only three licenses for the software. There should be 5 licenses for the modern family--we have three desktops and two laptops for five people in my house, and many families have at least four people. I can't find any way to get more licenses from WD. I'd have to buy another MyBook, and if I knew that was the case, I wouldn't have bought the 3TB unit, I'd have bought two 2TB units. For this, I'm dropping an egg.

Other Thoughts: If not for the stinginess with the software licensing, this would be a five egg review.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: One on the best purchases I have made in a very…very long time. There is nothing I can really say bad about this device. when I first installed device it took me some time to understand. I would not see it as an external drive?.... but After I downloaded the software and installed it, I was able to see the drive using the software. It took me dragging and dropping my information to realize how user friendly this was. I let it run all night as the files were being saved. I am sure it did not take that long but I wanted to leave it up just in case. Now I am at work and I pull my phone out my pocket click my cloud app, enter my password and wow ….all my information is at my finger tips.
I forgot to mention I am a tech so I did allot of research and comparisons online and YouTube. I noticed this device and am happy I chose it. Now if my computer ever crashes (again) all my information is still accessible. I also like how it’s not configured like a USB drive but over the network. I keep it separate and even plug it into a different power strip than my computer setup. The only advice I would give is to take at least an hour to learn how the drive works and configure it to your liking. My wife doesn’t understand what it is but the next time our computer crashes and we still have all our information she will get it
.
only reason this did not get 5 stars was its still only a week old.

Cons: NONE

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of time and space

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: There is enough storage space to back up the information for my small business. Installation and setup were easy enough.

Cons: Remote access is advertised, but I can't connect unless I am on the same network. This defeats the purpose of getting the My Cloud for my business. I want to be able to back up employees' hard drives and be able to share files with clients without compromising the security of my network. The employees all work remotely and none of them can access the My Cloud device.

Other Thoughts: Stick with Dropbox.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Colby W.,
We appreciate your feedback regarding our WD My Cloud personal cloud storage. You can backup all your local computers to the NAS, unfortunately backup of remote computers is not possible. Please check that you have properly setup remote access for each user whom will be connecting to the data stored on the My Cloud drive from outside your local network.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Local and Remote Storage

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: After searching around, decided to try this one because of the reviews. Easy setup, updated firmware, and transferred 500 MB right away. Network took awhile to make the first upload (16 hours) but that was likely due to an older switch in the network and not the WD device. Can access remotely via WD website - great feature that I didn't fully appreciate until after I used it.

Cons: Wish the PC-side programs were lighter and faster. Depending on how you use it, you'll be installing a little or a lot. 99% of my use is as a local network drive, so quickly jumping to the drive in Explorer is most appreciated.

Other Thoughts: None.

1 out of 5 eggsTorture

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Worked great for one day.

Cons: After one day, the power went out. Why is that a problem? When installed I used their "dashboard"; it loaded a webpage from 193.168.0.107 -- OK, fine; that's the address. I was able to guess that I could access the device, using that address, from any computer in my LAN. After the power came back, the dashboard utility still links to 192.168.0.107 -- only it's not there. Dashboard utility is useless. What's the new address? Other computers in my LAN, set up with the 107 address cannot find "my cloud". I eventually found I could use the name WDMYCLOUD instead of the address -- mind you, WD's help didn't tell me that. I had to work for it. Dashboard utility is still useless. I just HOPE I can set my systems to locate the devise without a lot of work. Why does WD hate its customers?

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Tom H.,
We appreciate your feedback regarding our WD My Cloud NAS. Periodically the router will assign a new IP address as the DHCP lease expires on a particular device. Your router is the default DHCP server for your LAN (Local Area Network). The My Cloud Setup software will place three shortcuts on your desktop for the Dashboard (Web User Interface), the Public share, and our Learning Center. The Dashboard and Public share short cuts are configured by the IP address at the time the drive was setup. You may edit these short cuts by right mouse click on the particular shortcut and select Properties. Allow some time for the Properties window to open. Replace the IP address with the NAS drive name i.e. WDMyCloud for example. Save your changes. The shortcuts will now point to the drive name instead of a dynamic IP address. Another method would be to assign a static IP address or IP address reservation in your router.
