4 out of 5 eggsVery useful device

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Ease of setup--plug it in to the LAN, navigate to the webpage in the instructions, and it just works. Backs up the data on the machines automatically, and sharing media is drag-and-drop simple.

It looks nice with the clean lines and minimal interruptions of the case.

Cons: There's only three licenses for the software. There should be 5 licenses for the modern family--we have three desktops and two laptops for five people in my house, and many families have at least four people. I can't find any way to get more licenses from WD. I'd have to buy another MyBook, and if I knew that was the case, I wouldn't have bought the 3TB unit, I'd have bought two 2TB units. For this, I'm dropping an egg.

Other Thoughts: If not for the stinginess with the software licensing, this would be a five egg review.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: One on the best purchases I have made in a very…very long time. There is nothing I can really say bad about this device. when I first installed device it took me some time to understand. I would not see it as an external drive?.... but After I downloaded the software and installed it, I was able to see the drive using the software. It took me dragging and dropping my information to realize how user friendly this was. I let it run all night as the files were being saved. I am sure it did not take that long but I wanted to leave it up just in case. Now I am at work and I pull my phone out my pocket click my cloud app, enter my password and wow ….all my information is at my finger tips.
I forgot to mention I am a tech so I did allot of research and comparisons online and YouTube. I noticed this device and am happy I chose it. Now if my computer ever crashes (again) all my information is still accessible. I also like how it’s not configured like a USB drive but over the network. I keep it separate and even plug it into a different power strip than my computer setup. The only advice I would give is to take at least an hour to learn how the drive works and configure it to your liking. My wife doesn’t understand what it is but the next time our computer crashes and we still have all our information she will get it
.
only reason this did not get 5 stars was its still only a week old.

1 out of 5 eggsWaste of time and space

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: There is enough storage space to back up the information for my small business. Installation and setup were easy enough.

Cons: Remote access is advertised, but I can't connect unless I am on the same network. This defeats the purpose of getting the My Cloud for my business. I want to be able to back up employees' hard drives and be able to share files with clients without compromising the security of my network. The employees all work remotely and none of them can access the My Cloud device.

Other Thoughts: Stick with Dropbox.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Colby W.,
We appreciate your feedback regarding our WD My Cloud personal cloud storage. You can backup all your local computers to the NAS, unfortunately backup of remote computers is not possible. Please check that you have properly setup remote access for each user whom will be connecting to the data stored on the My Cloud drive from outside your local network.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat for Local and Remote Storage

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: After searching around, decided to try this one because of the reviews. Easy setup, updated firmware, and transferred 500 MB right away. Network took awhile to make the first upload (16 hours) but that was likely due to an older switch in the network and not the WD device. Can access remotely via WD website - great feature that I didn't fully appreciate until after I used it.

Cons: Wish the PC-side programs were lighter and faster. Depending on how you use it, you'll be installing a little or a lot. 99% of my use is as a local network drive, so quickly jumping to the drive in Explorer is most appreciated.

Other Thoughts: None.

1 out of 5 eggsTorture

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Worked great for one day.

Cons: After one day, the power went out. Why is that a problem? When installed I used their "dashboard"; it loaded a webpage from 193.168.0.107 -- OK, fine; that's the address. I was able to guess that I could access the device, using that address, from any computer in my LAN. After the power came back, the dashboard utility still links to 192.168.0.107 -- only it's not there. Dashboard utility is useless. What's the new address? Other computers in my LAN, set up with the 107 address cannot find "my cloud". I eventually found I could use the name WDMYCLOUD instead of the address -- mind you, WD's help didn't tell me that. I had to work for it. Dashboard utility is still useless. I just HOPE I can set my systems to locate the devise without a lot of work. Why does WD hate its customers?

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Tom H.,
We appreciate your feedback regarding our WD My Cloud NAS. Periodically the router will assign a new IP address as the DHCP lease expires on a particular device. Your router is the default DHCP server for your LAN (Local Area Network). The My Cloud Setup software will place three shortcuts on your desktop for the Dashboard (Web User Interface), the Public share, and our Learning Center. The Dashboard and Public share short cuts are configured by the IP address at the time the drive was setup. You may edit these short cuts by right mouse click on the particular shortcut and select Properties. Allow some time for the Properties window to open. Replace the IP address with the NAS drive name i.e. WDMyCloud for example. Save your changes. The shortcuts will now point to the drive name instead of a dynamic IP address. Another method would be to assign a static IP address or IP address reservation in your router.
How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive with a Static IP:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Easy setup, easy automated backup options with smartware software. Plays all movies I've thrown at it and even had 6 household devices all watching the same movie off the device at the same time.

Cons: Not enough security as others have mentioned...if they get past your routers firewall then they can access all your network data and download it for themselves. Alot of people shouldnt have to worry about this though more security features/firewalls would of been expected with this type of device.

1 out of 5 eggsCaution

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Looks good on paper; when they get the bugs worked out it might be very good.

Cons: Caution. Many problems, please visit the WD MyCloud forum before buying (in Google search "mycloud forum". In particular, look at the thread "My Cloud disconneted itself from network." [sic] For many users the drive disappears every a few hours and has to be unplugged to be used. There has been no acknowledgement, response or workaround from WD.

I tried two with the same problem. I bought a brand new router to see if it would solve the problem, no difference. Plugged it directly into a PC with ad-hoc Windows networking. Same problem. Tried fixed-ip and several other user suggested ideas from the forums. None worked, just has they haven't for people in that thread.

It works long enough for you to spend time configuring and copying files to it. Then it just won't stay on your network. I sincerely tried to make this thing work & in the end wasted a lot of time & money on this drive. The least I can say is that if you buy it and encounter the same problem of it disappearing from the network, return it immediately. There's no fix.

Other Thoughts: I can't watch this thing getting 4 stars without warning people about this drive.

WD will probably respond to this review with troubleshooting suggestions as if they don't know about the problem. In reality, it has been a problem for almost two months with no solution from WD. There are 127 messages in the "My Cloud disconneted itself from network." thread and NOT ONE PERSON has posted that WD helped them solve the problem.

The only users that have had success had to SSH into the drive and set up a shell script to force the drive to stay awake. If you're not that technical or comfortable having to hack a brand new product, you should probably wait until they solve this problem.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi zzzoinks, We apologize for the continued inconvenience you have experienced with the My Cloud and loss of connectivity. Western Digital is determined to address and resolve all issues relating to any customer concerns. If you have not already done so, we recommend assigning a Static IP to the drive through the Dashboard’s System Settings. This would isolate any possible issues related to DHCP and lease times for connected devices on your LAN. We see you have previously been in touch with our support team. We will forward your information to them for follow-up with your concerns directly, so we are able to further assess these symptoms and try to determine the root cause of the issue. You may also reach our My Cloud support at the below link if you prefer, and mention this Newegg review. http://support.wdc.com/contact/contact.asp?lang=en&ct=sentinel

2 out of 5 eggsSLOW

This review is from: WD My Cloud 2TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0020HWT-NESN

Pros: Lots of software and WD help.
Great for Docs and pictures.

Cons: If you don't have a Gigabit Ethernet card it is DEADLY slow. I got around 8Mbps on a hardline, slower than my USB2 Canvio. As a gamer with limited space due to SSD's this drive doesn't cut it with it's speeds, taking over an hour to move a 25GB game.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Robbie,
We appreciate you taking the time to provide feedback related to your experience with the My Cloud NAS. As a standard practice when trying to achieve the best possible performance from networking equipment, it is advisable to utilize CAT 5e/6 Ethernet cabling along with Gigabit supported interfaces; be it your router, computer, or other connected devices like a NAS. When connecting devices supported with a slower physical data link, the performance you will achieve will only be as fast as your slowest connected device, such as 10/100 Ethernet or wireless connections. Connecting a USB 3.0 hard drive to a USB 2.0 card/port connection directly to a computer will also see these types of results, as the slowest connection in this scenario would be 2.0, and you would only see USB 2.0 capable speeds.
A USB connected device may still potentially provide faster speeds for data transfer, due to the fact that there is not an extra physical layer between your router and a NAS drive for the data to move across.

If there is any further technical assistance or feedback our My Cloud support team can provide you with, please do not hesitate to contact us via email or phone at the below link, and mention this Newegg review.
