1 out of 5 eggsMy Cloud 3TB Extremely slow

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Priced right
Does all claimed functions - just extremely slow

Cons: Extremely "slow". I tried to transfer 2gb of photos to My Cloud from my computer, both connected to my gabit Network and it took over 17 minutes. This is less than 2 mb a second. I tried other files and the results were the same.

Other Thoughts: Slow - very slow. 1 -2 mb per second. 17 minutes to transfer 2gb. I have gigabit ethernet D-Link dir655 and gigabit nic on computer. I turned off virus protection and fire wall just in case this would interfere. Running Windows 7 with 8 gigs of ram - AMD Phenom II 975 x4 at 3.6ghz 500gig boot drive and 2tb raid 5.
I updated the firmware

3 out of 5 eggsFor good transfer speeds, you have to know what you are doing.

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Low Price for 3 Terabytes.
Attractive Design
Small Form Factor
USB port on back can be used with a hub to control up to 6 external drives for backup of main hard drive and/or storage expansion.

Cons: Transfer speeds are very, very slow using windows explorer to drag and drop. And it has nothing to do with my network, a 6 year old NAS made by Maxtor plugged into the same router is at least 4 times as fast as this Western Digital. Several other reviews report the same problem, so it is definitely a flaw of the drive. That being said, I am now teaching myself how to use FTP in hopes that I obtain the transfer speeds this drive is supposed to be capable of. Western Digital should be more forthcoming about this shortcoming in their product.

Other Thoughts: I have a USB 3.0 hub plugged into the back of this little NAS with 4 hard drives attached, quadrupling my storage capability for a low cost.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings,
Thank you for providing us with your feedback on the My Cloud drive.
As a troubleshooting step to isolate the performance concerns you are experiencing in your environment when using the My Cloud, we recommend disabling the Media Server feature on all shares and on the drive entirely through the Dashboard/Configuration page. This will rule out the possibility that an initial cataloging of the information is not causing the concern.
“How to enable and disable Twonky Media Server on a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10418

Please also verify that your My Cloud has the latest firmware, which may also provide a resolution to your concerns.
“How to manually or automatically update the firmware on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10440

We have also provided you with a link below on how to optimize performance with the My Cloud on your LAN, and potentially improve overall performance. It is important to validate that your router and connected devices are utilizing gigabit connectivity, and if you are wireless with your computer, we recommend testing with an Ethernet cable while disabling wireless.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Device!

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: I had it set up in less than 2 minutes. It's easy to use and I can access files on my phone and tablet. The biggest surprise was the ability to see my videos on my TV! I have cloud storage in several accounts and now, I can have everything in one place.

Cons: None so far

5 out of 5 eggsalways look at ALL the reviews

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: great web interface
Fast
firmware updates are auto

Cons: not free
slight learning curve

Other Thoughts: I read other reviews almost scared me away !
I am using this as a fast ssd backup & sync some work folders
Some complain about speed, as I read, look at the back of the unit, the led at the cable should green (1gb) not yellow (100mb)
if so swap with other network cables they say it worked
I backed up about 180gb in 1 hour through my router.
I have not tried streaming .

4 out of 5 eggsWow, Really?

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Works very well for me. I mapped it as a drive on my PC. Drag n' Drop works fine. Video and Audio files play like I want them to.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Until I mapped my drive I had trouble whereas it would not appear in the drive stucture. It took about 2 hours to move 1.75 TB of info. can't believe all the poor ratings. I guess I was lucky in that I like my unit.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome storage

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Works very well on my network. Able to get all of my devices to connect to the drive. Also love the fact that I can connect to it to get a file when I am away from home!

Cons: Nothing at this time. Just make sure you use a static IP address for the drive. Works much better this way.

Other Thoughts: Glad I didn't listen to all of the reviews of this drive. This drive work rather well for what I need it for and more!

1 out of 5 eggsWD My Cloud 3T

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Looks nice.

Cons: I begin by stating that I am a programmer and an absolutely shocked that WD would release the 3T MyCloud product with the software it currently uses. The developers should be fired.I attached it to my Dell PC and Macintosh LAN and before using it I updated its firmware. It took FOUR DAYS (4) to copy less than 500 gigs to the appliance. I was mad; but, it copied so gave it another chance by trying to copy a USB drive connected to a MacbookPro. After FIVE (5) DAYS the activity light was sitll blinking and the CPU usage continued to make the Macintosh unusable. I rebooted everything to find I could no longer connect to the device. I tried using a paper-clip to reset the unit and still was able to connect to it. I couldn't even scrub the MyCloud of the data copied to it before returning it. THIS IS A NOT-READY-FOR-PRIME-TIME PRODUCT!!!

Other Thoughts: Reading another users bad experience, I called WD Technical Support during the afternoon before returning the WD MyCloud 3T. The person I spoke to seemed to be reading from a script and may have just as well been speaking in another language. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT! WD . . . I want the TWO (2) WEEKS of my life back!!! And that's what I am going to tell Saint Peter (at the gates of heaven) when I die. I WANT MY TWO WEEKS BACK!!!

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Customer,
We regret to hear your experience with the My Cloud and provided support was not favorable. It appears as though you attempted to perform a reset of the device by pressing the button the back with a paper clip, but it is unclear if you tried to perform a system restore. This would reset the OS and rule out any software concerns with the device that may be caused by a firmware update not completing properly. It is important that the power and Ethernet are disconnected, the reset button pressed in, then the power plugged in while keeping the reset button pressed for no less than 45 seconds. The link below provides further detailed information on this procedure.
“How to restore a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive to factory default settings”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10433

We would like the opportunity to follow-up with you directly on this, should the above not resolve your concerns, as the device may unfortunately need replacement under warranty. Please contact us by phone or email at the below information and mention this Newegg review when you speak with our staff and we will get you in touch with the proper team member.

2 out of 5 eggsMy Cloud issues

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: I do not write reviews very often but I believe anyone buying this drive should know about the good/bad.
What the drive promises and what it may be capable of providing is fantastic. When it works, it is great and I feel is fairly fast (we have a fast network and very fast internet in our office so that may skew my opinions here). It was reasonably easy to setup but often may require a lot of tweaking to keep it going or perfect the connection.
I have owned this drive now for approximately 4-months and it has been reliable for approximately 1 1/2 months of that time.
The good news is the "Safepoint" backup function allows you to connect a USB drive to this drive and it will mirror itself on the attached drive and will send you an email or text to let you know the backup was successful. We have attached a 3TB WD MyBook to the 3TB My Cloud since the beginning, this has been our saving feature to prevent data loss and it works great.

Cons: I saw a reviewer remark that if all you know is drag and drop you may not be happy with this drive. I would carry that a little farther and say that if you are not extremely knowledgeable and comfortable with networking you will most certainly be disappointed with this device.
I spent two months getting this drive to function and spent a lot of time on the phone with WD tech people (they are great to work with). The latest Firmware update came with a lot of issues, take a look at their forum, the WD community, you can google to find the address.
I have now enjoyed roughly 45-days of great performance and reliable backup. I purchased this drive for data backup and cloud access to our company data, we do not use the photo/video streaming capabilities and I see on the forum that is a very big headache for a lot of people. For our use, the data backup may possibly work out, we are still in a wait and see mode and I could not recommend this drive to someone who is trying to backup critical data.
However, for the home hobbyist that wants to watch videos and display photos and if they have a reliable backup for that data, this could be a very good device.

Other Thoughts: I would not recommend this drive as a backup for critical data at this time, my opinion may change as WD fixes problems. It can be a great device for the tech minded folks that like to tinker with settings/configurations and enjoy a challenge.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsOne of the happy few it seems...

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Allows SSH console and FTP file transfer as well as management through the web gui. The DLNA and UPNP support are great! Comes pre-installed with Twonky media server which supports thinks like Apple TV, Roku, etc.

Cons: Twonky doesn't support Chromecast directly yet, so still a bit of a frustration there. Plex media server is a bit robust for the ARMv7 dual core processors that this hardware is using, so transcoding of video media on the fly is actually turned off by the program when it identifies the processor architecture. The dropbox integration is not what I thought it was, it doesn't support the dropbox client (sync) natively, you can run a WD program on your PC that will integrate w/ dropbox for a backup/restore scenario natively. I was however able to find a dropbox script that runs on embedded debian architectures using the dropbox authentication api, but initially I purchased because I misunderstood that it fully integrated w/ dropbox. Not a big deal for me, but less advanced users will be upset with something like this.

Other Thoughts: If all you know how to do is click and drag to copy items through the windows explorer, you are going to have some frustration if you are copying a large number of smaller files. More recent versions of windows have an updated version of Samba and as best I can tell they sacrificed performance for more security. If you are familiar with things like SSH and FTP, you can dramatically increase the speed of your transfers by using an FTP client like Filezilla (free). I can see why others are frustrated because this is sold and marketed as an easy to use product, and it is for the most part, but you can really unlock the performance and possibilities of the device if you are even a little bit familiar with some of the other more advanced features and methods that it offers.

1 out of 5 eggsI don't often do this...

This review is from: WD My Cloud 3TB Personal Cloud Storage WDBCTL0030HWT-NESN

Pros: Large capacity, great concept, looks great, decent price (if it worked as inteded).

Cons: Very poorly executed. Slow when it worked, useless when it didn't work, which was most of the time.

Other Thoughts: I don't often write reviews and I have never returned an item until now. I got this to replace my other networked hd set up that I always felt was hokey and sophmorish. So I was pretty excited to see this product.

Upon hooking everything up, the 1st thing I tried was to transfer all of my backed up movies, about 300 gigs, and after several attempts it was not able to transfer a single movie. All of the folders and smaller associated files were transferred, but no movies. It would error out after 12 hours. BTW, it said it would take 7 days to transfer the 300G's.

I suspected the router or cable even though all RJ-45 lights were green. I swapped gigabit routers and sure enough it got faster but it was still completely impossible to transfer my movies, music, and pictures. Pictures would transfer corrupted.

Trying to open any file that was miraculously transferred onto the My Cloud drive was also incredibly slow.

Also, the apps suck. They were also slow. They are difficuly to use to navigate through your files. It makes no effort to sort your media files. It actually makes my older setup's apps and interface look like a polished diamond.

I see WD on these NewEgg reviews apologizing and giving suggestions. And even though I can appreciate the effort, please don't try to help me. I have seen the suggestions that you have posted I have tried them all. I had the latest firmware. I tried multiple gigabit routers with minimal improvements. Please figure out why it's sooooo slow, and please look at what the competition is doing as far as app features and find some ispiration.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello,
Thank you for your feedback, and we regret to hear that you have returned your device. We recently released a firmware update to the My Cloud that may have improved some of the performance concerns on you LAN. The link below provides instructions on how to update the device.
“Product update for WD My Cloud”: http://www.wd.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfmycloud_s

Using a gigabit router is highly recommended, but if your computer is not hard-wired to the router as well, wireless connectivity can contribute to slower than expected performance. The link below provides recommendations on how to optimize performance of the My Cloud on your LAN.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

Performing a factory restore of the device may also have helped in resolving any possible software/OS issues that may have caused the unexpected behavior.
“How to reset a WD My Cloud, WD My Cloud EX2, or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10432

If for any reason we can be of assistance to you in the event that you have not yet returned the device, please contact us by phone or email below and reference this Newegg review.
