5 out of 5 eggsGreat drives

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Decent access speed, running fairly cool, 5-year warranty, got both on sale for $200 each.

Cons: None yet.

Other Thoughts: Ordered two of these to run in a RAID1 array on an Adaptec 6405E controller as Direct Attached Storage in a ESXi host in a vSphere cluster. Still waiting for the SuperMicro board to come (Would have ordered it from Newegg if they had it in stock), but I have fitness tested these with WD's Data Lifeguard tool. Extended test passed in almost the same amount of time for each, and they both stayed at a low temperature throughout the test.

I have had a lot of Western Digital drives over the years and about half as many Seagates. Also had a slew of low end Fujitsus, Hitachis, Samsungs, Maxtor, etc. To date, I have only had 2 WD's fail. The first one was a 15 GB PATA 5.4K RPM drive that failed after 2 years back in 2001, and the other was a 2.5" WD Black 3 Gbps 320 GB that was heavily written to. It took almost 5 years to fail and about 2 months before the warranty was up, I got it replaced. The replacement has been going strong for over a year. Roughly 50% of all of my Seagates have failed at this point, and unless I am somehow getting one for free, I will no longer pay money for Seagate magnetic storage. I see others have had issues with WD, and you are going to have flaws among your materials and processes from time to time with mass production. From my own experiences, and looking at it from a simply statistical analysis standpoint, I have to say I will continue to choose WD for high end desktop-grade magnetic storage.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat drive, thank WD for warranty though

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Its an awesome drive w/ tons of storage and fast read/write speeds

Cons: Mine went completely bad in less than a year and I lost all my data. It got warrantied by WD, but it was still a sad experience. Just more proof that multiple full backups are a must.

Other Thoughts: I was really mad that I lost all my data on this drive, but the RMA was fast and I still went back and bought a 6TB WD red.

Other Thoughts: Will eventually purchase same additional model drives

1 out of 5 eggsvery bad

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good storage space I guess, packaging was very nice.

Cons: Didn't work

Other Thoughts: I went to boot my new computer, Intel 5960 corsair 32 GB Dominator platinum ram, corsair AX1500 power supply, asus x99 motherboard, everything booted fine but my HDD caught fire and melted half of my drive bay, and almost hit my motherboard. Purchasing a seagate drive, would try to get anyone to not buy from WD. But newegg itself has amazing service

2 out of 5 eggsFirst One DOA

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast for a HDD.

Large capacity. I can remember when 4MB was huge.

Quiet. Despite their reputation for being noisy, all my Blacks have been quiet. I can barely hear them running in an internal dock with my ear right by them. I can't hear them at all in my machine.

Cooler than the Blacks' reputation would suggest. The 4TB is running one degree Centigrade cooler than the coolest 2TB in my machine.

Cons: Cost (but, then again, I'm cheap). Fortunately, I caught it on sale.

Heavy. I may have to register this one as a lethal weapon!

In the case of the first HDD, it was Dead On Arrival. That cost two stars. I also had to pay for return shipping on the DOA HDD. That cost another star.

Other Thoughts: The first HDD I received was dead on arrival. It wouldn't even spin up. In all fairness, the drive was well packaged but the carrier could have handled it too roughly for even the padded packaging—heavy duty pillow wrap— to be able to handle without damage to the HDD.

NewEgg promptly replaced it and the second one is working just fine now and passes all the tests I threw at it.. If it should fail at a later date, I will report back. The thing that galls me most is I had to pay for the return shipping of the DOA HDD.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I have 3 of these drives (owned 1 week to a year). So far, all three peacefully do their job -- none has failed. When on sale, price was reasonable, at $200 a pop.

Cons: A bit slow, compared to similar (but lower capacity) 7200RPM drives.

Other Thoughts: For data storage, these drives seem to be the best compromise between reliability, performance and price.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive Failure

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Great storage capacity, excellent speed.

Cons: Purchase drive in 02/2014. Now in 10/2014 drive has 100% failed. It will not pass the WD diagnostic tests. WD has authorized RMA to replace the drive with refurbished drive....not a new one.....a refurbished drive. Makes you wonder where they come up with the refurbished drives........are they failed drives from other users? Not too encouraging. However, disappointed with the inconvenience of having to go through all this hassle. In the past, the WD drives have always been excellent quality. Obviously, something has changed. Looking at the reviews, it appears that there has been a surge of failing 4TB drives.

1 out of 5 eggsAll data....LOST!!!!!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Price
Storage

Cons: Life Span
Lost all DATA
Slow Read Speeds
Slow Data Transfer Rates

Other Thoughts: Hard Drive died in least than one month from purchased date. I tried new SATA cords, USB connection and all failed. All 5 SATA ports on motherboard are working and detects my SSD, DVD Drives, & my old 1TB WD HDD no matter what port I move them to. Lost of my HD movies, over 1.27TB of data....GONE. Drive is not detected in BOIS nor Windows in Device Manager. No data recovery programs can locate this drive either, should've gone with an HGTS Drive instead. Drive died on me once but was able to recover it with Recuva & Truesize software, but that's only because it could be detected, now all I hear is an annoying tickering sound coming from the drive, such a waste.
