3 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The only company that offers 5 year warranty

Cons: Virtually all of my drives are from WD, ranging from 500gb to 4tb. Six of them are used in 2tb mirror raid configurations. Evaluating WD quality across the board, I regretfully have to say that their workmanship went to the dogs over the years. I experienced far too many failures across the board, and their warranty - repair standards are dubious at best. Too many of the beaters send as 'refurbished' died after to short of a while. Their 5 year warranty, while technically correct, is useless since their drives for the most part don't last. I've had new 1tb drives die on me within 24 hours.

Other Thoughts: Western Digital, please get your act together, increase your standards and stop screwing your trusting customers. The latest 4tb black drive arrived here two weeks ago with a BEND plate, glued together in manufacturing. Maybe going back to “Made In The USA” hmm?

5 out of 5 eggsWorks well.

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: i have had this drive for a little over a year without any issues.

Adequate speed when transferring gigantic files.

5 year warranty.

Cons: None that I can think of so far.

Other Thoughts: I purchased this drive after dealing with trouble on QA issues with WDs green drives. In my experience, the black drives are not only much faster, but have a much lower failure rate as well. I've only ever had to warranty one black drive and that was near the end of the fourth year.

I also wish that there was a way to see the overall RMA/mortality rate of different drives on newegg as there seem to be a disproportionate amount of reviews for defective drives as there are for good ones.

Another note: I have been rather dissatisfied with how Newegg packages hard drives to ship. They sent me ones wrapped with nothing but about 2 inches of bubble wrap in a tiny box. If you add other items to your order that ship together (even tiny items like SATA cables), they will put it in a much bigger box and I've found that it's also much better padded.

1 out of 5 eggsDrive arrived DOA

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Picked up this product on a "shell shocker" sale. Price was not bad and attractive.

Cons: Win 8.1 64 bit
Gigabyte x99- UD4( handles UEFI BIOS)
The drive was not "recognized" in drive management tab.
Windows could not even assign a drive letter to this drive.
Windows could not format this drive. You get what you pay for.
Buyer beware. Western Digital really disappointed me with this drive.

Other Thoughts: I simply do not understand all the posters in this thread saying this is a great drive and hey it works great.
News Flash .....IT DOES NOT.

2 out of 5 eggsI dont trust my hard drive!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: its a 4TB

Cons: Its really noisy!

Other Thoughts: So I have a 1TB Seagate hard drive that all my games were on and it was completely silent. now I bought a 4TB from WD and it is noisy! I don't know if that is normal or what but one thing ill know is if it is because I also have the same hard drive as a 1TB. I bought on the same day 2 WD hard drive. one 4TB for games and a 1TB for programs. I was thinking of keeping my Seagate as a backup drive only but as of right now my games are on both my seagates and my 4TB WD because I don't trust that hard drive. So yeah I am putting a two eggs because it is noisy compare to my Seagate that cost me 3 time less and supposed to be of cheaper quality but it doesn't make any noise.

Ill change my review if everything is okay later on.

1 out of 5 eggsgave me a broken drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: none from what i can tell

Cons: the drive could not be used. initially setting up a broken drive is, as you would guessed it, was pointless. first, it would show up in device manager and the bios, but not disk management. in denial of receiving a broken product from a website i trust so much, i updated my chipset drivers and updated intel's smart and rapid storage technology. the drive showed up as disk 1 in disk management. the option to initialize the drive was available. but since it was a broken drive, the function was invalid. opening command prompt, i used diskpart to see if there was anything i could do. the drive appeared to only have 0gb or storage even though it was supposed to be a whopping 4tb. after countless of diskpart operations, i finally accepted the fact that i received a broken product. newegg offered me to ship it back to them, but that was simply not an option for me. all in all, just be wary of buying this product for you may be unluck like me and waste $280 on something that doesnt even work.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat so far

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I love WD BLACK hard drives. I have had several. I had three, 1TB Black drives in my PC before buying this 4TB WD Black drive.

I just did a quick HDTune test:
-------------------------------------
-------------------------------------
test 1:
HD Tune: WDC WD4003FZEX-00Z4SA0 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 137.8 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 183.4 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 162.8 MB/sec
Access Time : 8.8 ms
Burst Rate : 261.2 MB/sec
CPU Usage : -1.0%
(64k test)
------------------------------------
-----------------------------------
test 2:
HD Tune: WDC WD4003FZEX-00Z4SA0 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 137.9 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 183.4 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 162.9 MB/sec
Access Time : 9.0 ms
Burst Rate : 247.2 MB/sec
CPU Usage : -1.0%
(64k)
------------------------------------
-----------------------------------
test 3:
HD Tune: WDC WD4003FZEX-00Z4SA0 Benchmark

Transfer Rate Minimum : 137.8 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Maximum : 183.5 MB/sec
Transfer Rate Average : 162.9 MB/sec
Access Time : 9.0 ms
Burst Rate : 246.6 MB/sec
CPU Usage : -1.0%
(128k test)
----------------------------------
-----------------------------------
At the moment I just stuck it on the top of my case, it is a regular internal SATA hookup port, but just located on the top of my case, out in the open.

It runs quiet and cool so far (35C after the three tests, 31C before), same as the drives inside case, but I have several large, slow, quiet case fans so my case is well ventilated.

Eventually I will take doors off and install it permanently inside. Good purchase, and I am confident the HD will last several years.

I may buy another and then have 11TB total. That should last a while.

Cons: It wasn't exactly cheap, but hey, you get what you pay for. One thing not to skimp on is where you store all your precious data. No cheap HDD for me.

1 out of 5 eggsnot reliable

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: size and performance if he's not defective

Cons: dead after 3 month After a couple of weeks it started clicking. A few days later it completely died .got rma at wd, took 3 weeks to get a replacement refurbished piece of &$&*% who died after 3 days!!! still fighting with them (WD)
they don't know how to satisfy you properly as we deserve

Other Thoughts: I'm not the only one that had this happen. There are a couple of other reviews that had the same problem.

5 out of 5 eggsBlack Drives Are Best

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD4003FZEX 4TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: -One of the fastest consumer drive lines out there.
-Quiet.
-Not super hot, in spite of performance.
-Reliable.
-Good warranty.

Cons: -Price is higher but with good reason.

Other Thoughts: I already had a Black drive that I was using games on and purchased this to store my YouTube video projects on and to use for capture and editing. I've worked with most of the consumer hard drives available today and unless you want to spend a lot of money for a small VelociRaptor drive, these are the best performers you can get. They're also quiet and run relatively cool considering the performance and have a great warranty. I've had great luck with these. They cost more but are well worth it.
