1 out of 5 eggsBroken SATA Connector

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: None

Cons: SATA connector broke the first time I disconnected it. Been putting builds together well before the advent of SATA drives, and this broken connector is a first for me. Unfortunately, my Newegg return window had closed. I returned the drive to WD; they sent it back to me. I contacted WD customer service via phone and email and got nothing but empty promises and a marathon run-around for over three months. I'm out $300 plus tax (price at the time) and won't be buying anything WD in the foreseeable future.

Other Thoughts: Be super careful when connecting & disconnecting this drive.

1 out of 5 eggsNot following standards

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: large and fast

Cons: Sata cable won't stay on. Any time the PC is moved, the sata cable falls right out of the back of the drive. Even though the sata cable has a metal clip designed to lock it into the socket of the drive, the socket of the drive is missing the matching locking mechanism that every other sata-based hard drive has. Why just this one WDC? What makes this one so different?

3 out of 5 eggs9 bad sectors after 9 months of use

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: Worked great for 9 months. Quiet, fast.

Cons: The drive is 9 months old and now has 9 bad sectors which SMART says cannot be recovered. The drive has been powered on almost non-stop since I installed it and it gets about 50 hours of active use per week. I'll get an RMA and send it back to WD for an exchange.

Other Thoughts: I had a similar incident with a 3GB Seagate drive after about a year. On the other hand, I have a 1.5 TB WD drive that's been running perfectly for 5.5 years. I wish all my disks were that reliable.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: Would buy again and would recommend.

1 out of 5 eggsCheap Sata connection

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: Arrived on time.

Cons: Sata connection broke immediately. So quickly I suspect it shipped broken.

Other Thoughts: I'll be returning.

1 out of 5 eggsNot a happy experience

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: Large capacity--when working.

Cons: As noted in other reviews, this is one noisy drive. Spun up it is loud enough to hear in a quiet office space. On reads and writes, it chatters and taps very noticeably. This particular drive regularly appeared and disappeared from the SATA3 controller after about 3 weeks of operation. Moving it to another, slower SATA port on the secondary motherboard controller set seemed to cure it--for three days. Same thing--and sometimes even on reboot would not recognize the thing. Only hot plugging it would restore it in the device/drive manager. Never knew when it would drop out--not a happy thing for PhotoShop or large spreadsheets. I bought another PCIe SATA controller to rule out a failing bridge chipset on the motherboard--it did the same thing. End of this part of the story? It has been replaced with a 4TB Seagate drive that has not had a bit of problem. Time to contact Western Digital, because at nearly 60 days it is out of Newegg refund/RMA replacement coverage.

Often very very slow reads of a folder--freezing the Explorer whilst the green indicator slowly crept across the location

Other Thoughts: For many years I have relied on WD and the various "Caviar" and "Black" drives for essential workstation storage. Two Black drives I bought last year (500Gb) for another workstation failed within weeks of each other a couple months ago. The reviews seem to suggest this is not all that uncommon--and an internet search reveals lots of issues identical to what I experienced. Perhaps it's time for me to consider other brands on a permanent basis...

3 out of 5 eggsGood drives, when they work.

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: Large storage, high speed

Cons: Can fail easily

Other Thoughts: I ordered two of these drives for a new build I was doing. They came from a 3rd party seller, and after about two months of use, one of the drives started to fail. SMART warned me about it, so I contacted Western Digital about the failing drive. They looked at the drive and said it was altered and would not warranty it. So buyer beware of the seller and no warranties issued with it.

5 out of 5 eggsVery good and reliable 4tb drive, with a five year warranty made to last

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: This drive will last me for a very long time considering the space it has. I have always been a seagate fan but decided to go with this WD drive because seagate doesnt seem to be making their drives like they used to. Once i had everything running the way that i want, (CON BELOW), this drive has been very solid

Cons: I had some issues of which i havent had before. Maybe its just me as i havent had a drive this size before since windows doesnt like any drive over 4tb unless its in GPT. So i cant knock this product down an egg. My setup was i have my windows on an ssd, storage was a 1tb drive, and another ssd for games. I removed my ssd game drive to install this WD 4TB drive, so i could copy all files from the 1tb to the new 4tb. All went well, shut down computer. Took out 1tb and reinstalled my ssd game drive. Windows would then not boot!! To this day im not exactly sure why but i had to reinstall windows. I think when i converted this drive to gpt, it changed or corrupted my windows boot loader, and i couldnt fix it in windows setup. But all is well now, lol

Other Thoughts: Maybe someone could enlighten me as to why this happened to me? Putting this on here so maybe it wont happen to anyone else, but its strange.

5 out of 5 eggsGood HDD

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: - Plenty of storage space
- Fast for a mechanical HDD
- Has proven to be reliable
- 5 year warranty

Cons: - Noisy, even for a HDD. This wasn't totally unexpected, as my previous WD Black was pretty noisy as well.
- Somewhat overpriced compared to other HDDs of similar size on the market.

5 out of 5 eggsUnsure of why others complain.

This review is from: WD Black 4TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD4003FZEX

Pros: Seems to have good speed, quiet, not too hot while running.

Cons: None So Far

Other Thoughts: I read some of the negative reviews on this drive, and I admit to not doing my homework before buying.

BUT....I plugged it into a USB2 Dock and it showed up as 1.6Tb even when formatted GPT, then I took it from the dock, and attached it direct to the onboard controller as an internal drive... all bad issues disappeared, and it is running nice and quiet, with good transfer rates, using it for iTunes media drive for Apple TV, and the only issue not yet observed/resolved are the reports of its near term failures, I will get back to you if that happens.

But so far, as usual, great drive, WD.
