5 out of 5 eggsWD Excelkence

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Large HDD space that would take anyone a good bit of time to fill up. Spindle @ 7200 makes it good enough to run games. No extra heat being added to what is already in tower.

Cons: It says 3 TB HDD but is closer to 2.8 TB

1 out of 5 eggsYeah not good.

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Not much so far.

Cons: Labeled "Performance" Hard drive. Most certainly is not. So far, it's locked me out of an entire terabyte of storage giving me only 2TB. It is, by far, the loudest thing in my computer, and if I don't completely shut my computer off at night it WILL keep me up, whether I'm doing something or not. I can have all programs close and it STILL cranks away. Tried transferring some stuff from my old drive and would get 99% of the way transferred then just stop, with literally 20 mb's left. Honestly just not a great drive.

Other Thoughts: I'll have to send this one back and purchase from a different company. I'll have to deal with this one until a new one comes I guess.

5 out of 5 eggs190+ MB/S read and write= Sold! fastest HDD I've ever used. WD is very solid

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Very fast for a HDD, faster than my first SSD. roughly $50/TB.
Heavy, very heavy, even compared to my WD 1TB SE Datacenter drive- Dead Rising should add this drive as a weapon option.
At the company I used to work for, we only used WD drives (whichever color was appropriate) to build Office PCs, a few gaming computers and quite a few Component Racks and NAS systems for Office and surveillance use. We had one 6TB Red DOA and no other issues, out of the at least 90 we bought. I'm pretty confident in WD.
Mine is whisper quiet... or less. I don't hear it at all. I had my wall off last night and even listened for it while it was transferring @ 150 MB/S, from a WD SE (The SE was slowing down the transfer, it tests at 160ish). Speedfan reads the temp at a steady 73.4 @ idle.

Cons: Not a one.

Other Thoughts: Most of the poor reviews for these hard drives are probably related to shipping damage. Quite a few of them are also individuals leaving multiple reviews. I only found 2 or 3 reviews with legitimate complaints - I don't consider DOA a legit complaint (except for the guy who says WD told him it was an invalid serial number). DOA is rare, but guaranteed to happen occasionally.

4 out of 5 eggsReliable operation.

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: WD has great support, 5YR warranty is nice.

Cons: I did have a problem with the sata plastic connector breaking off inside the cable while in my computer just from the wires getting moved. At first WD said that it was not covered under warranty and mailed back but after I complained and sent back a follow up survey they are going to replace the drive. I think the reason they said that it was not covered was because after I took the drive out to return it, I tried to place it in an external enclosure to get the data off and it bent a couple pins.

Other Thoughts: Overall, I have been using Western Digital Black hard drives since they came out and I would be afraid to try any other brand. I have ran into some problems over the years but WD customer service wins out in the end.

5 out of 5 eggsGood drive, with a long warranty, for critical data

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: 1. Purchased in Nov 2014 as an upgrade to a Samsung 1.5 TB drive within one desktop (the primary file storage desktop) in my household. Has been running well, with no issues, since then.

2. 5 year warranty.

Cons: The drive's 3 TB capacity, in the face of (as of today) today's drives of 4, 5, 6, and 8 TB, is quite small for "performance archival" use. It is this reason that I recently upgraded to a 2 drive (Raid 1) WD Red 6 TB array, using Windows 10 Storage Spaces, for this purpose.

Other Thoughts: I refuse to put critical data on any drive that is not warrantied for at least 3 years. This drive, with its 5 year warranty & 3 TB size, would do well for most people's primary "non OS, install applications/games" drive for years to come.

5 out of 5 eggsWD BLack for mass speedy storage FTW

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Has been running 24/7 365 since I purchased it just like my previous WD blacks. Idles at 35 degrees in an antec 1200 case with other drives. HD sentinel has reported no errors. Its not a seagate , and this is a pro because it will not just die on me like several other Seagates HDs that i have had previously.

Cons: They are expensive but compared to seagate I guess you get what you pay for.

2 out of 5 eggsWorth the price?

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: I got it for a good price at the time. Reliable for over 1 year with heavy use.

Cons: Louder and slower than the 2TB WD Black. Quit working within 3 years

Other Thoughts: I expected it to be on par with the 2TB and the 1TB WD black, but I noticed a decrease in speed and an increase in noise with this drive. It's been reliable, but I'd recommend the 1 or 2 TB over this drive. Update: Drive Failure within 2 years. 1 and 2 TB WD Black are still going strong.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow, loud and hot

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: - 3 TB is a decent amount of space
- Has a 5 year warranty

Cons: - This is a loud drive. When seeking it makes quite the racket
- Runs hot. Hottest of my drives
- Performance has seriously declined over time. This is the biggest drawback of this drive.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this drive for a year and a half. I also own the 2 TB version of this drive. This one is slower and hotter - both are noisy. I've used it as a media drive for an editing rig. When I load a project the grrrrring, zzzzrrrrrhing noise is very loud. It also sometimes randomly goes into a cycle where it makes a double click about every 5 to 10 seconds when idle. Very audible even in a noise dampened Design R4 case.

The drive tends to idle around 37 - 38 C, in a well ventilated case with a 140mm intake fan blowing into the drive caddy. (In an a\c'd apartment ~ 23C ambient)) Under load it hits 40C. Safe but too hot for my liking. My other 7200 rpm drives idle in the low 30's.

And the real kicker is the poor performance. This drive has deteriorated over time. Out of the box and empty the speeds were decent: ~ 180 seq read and 170 seq write. It had good Q depth speeds also. Now, a year and a half in, at 78% full I now get between 135 to maybe 140 on a good day. Those are like USB 3.1 speeds when connected internally on SATA III. I've tried it now on an ASUS Z87 Plus, ASUS M5 A97 R 2, and a Gigiabyte GA H97 D3H mobo. Also in a Rosewill JBOD external box - USB 3. I've used different cables, made sure it was on Intel and not Asmedia SATA ports, defragged it - nothing brings the speed up. It does pass WD's data lifeguard test, but it's just a slow drive. I have a 3TB 7200rpm Tosh'ba, same age, that absolutely smokes this drive. The 2 TB WD Black version averages about ~15 to 20 MB/s faster.

Best analogy for this is the slow clunky tank.

The drive is now in the external Rosewill box as expensive storage for archiving editing projects. This thing is definitely the worst price performance of my 8 HDD's.
