5 out of 5 eggsCan't go wrong with Western Digital.

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: The last WD drive I bought was the 2TB version and though it is reliable, I had some concerns but so far so good. This 3TB drive is quieter, spins up almost silently and does everything else I expect from Western.

Cons: None.

Other Thoughts: I always recommend Western Digital and always build PC's with them. Over the years I've had different manufacture's HDD quit on me and that should never happen. They may change their processes over time but the trust will never be there for me with Maxtor, Samsung HDD's, Hitachi and Toshiba. Seagate I have nothing against but Western Digital all the way!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive at a good price

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Quiet
Massive capacity
Faster that the 1TB and 2TB Blacks it is replacing

Cons: Took a while to get Windows 7 to recognize all 3TB for storage
Needed to convert to GPT drive, MBR is the default?

Other Thoughts: Needs to be installed as GPT Disk, not MBR to be able to access > 2TB. My problem was that I used a disk duplicator to copy over the contents from a WD 2TB Black MBR disk to it. After it finished, I could not access the additional 800-900GB of space, until I realized that the disk was set up as an MBR (Master Boot Record) format, and not set up as a GPT (GUID Partition Table) drive. After converting to GPT I was able to access all 3TB of space. It is now working fine.

1 out of 5 eggsSATA data connector broke off instantly

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: None yet.

Cons: I plugged in the connector and was gently routing the cable away from my video card and the next thing I know, it slipped off of the connector in a DOWNWARD motion. The "L" shaped plastic bit for the data connector was apparently cracked when I got it. I never even got to power it up. Plus it ruined a new SATA cable.

Other Thoughts: I have been working on PCs, including installing install hard drives, for over 10 years and this is the first time I have ever had a SATA connector break off. Now I have to wait an extra 2 weeks to RMA the drive to Newegg and hope they will replace it; based on a poor history of RMA practices I have read on the web. Perhaps RMAing to WD would have been better, but oh well. It seems WD has really let their quality slip. It wold be nice if Newegg let you attach photos like some other retailers do.

3 out of 5 eggsWorth the price?

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: I got it for a good price at the time. Reliable for over 1 year with heavy use.

Cons: Louder and slower than the 2TB WD Black.

Other Thoughts: I expected it to be on par with the 2TB and the 1TB WD black, but I noticed a decrease in speed and an increase in noise with this drive. It's been reliable, but I'd recommend the 1 or 2 TB over this drive.

4 out of 5 eggsReliable unit, high price.

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: This HDD has proven itself worthy of being inside my system. The 3TB unit is meant to replace my old 750GB drive and 250gb drive and boy did it deliver.
The HDD is not the fastest in the world, and for being brand new does compare similarly to my 2007-era 250gb drive, but for the storage capacity you cannot complain.

3TB of storage is pretty much the biggest draw, the only thing that was confusing was how Windows would only allow for a 2TB partition by default and would not properly set a full 3TB partition for use right away. This was solved with a simple method found on YouTube: https://youtu.be/NHAIDprjmYo (not my video)

Cons: The biggest drawback was the price. If I wasn't in the need for such high storage capacities I would've reallocated the money to the SSD in my system.

Other Thoughts: This drive boasts no real massive difference other than it's improvement in performance over the other drives of similar size, which at 3TB worth of paritioning it isn't even allowed to be a Windows boot drive, so that extra performance may go to waste if you only use it to store video files as I do.

If you are going to use it for something aside from video archiving, going with an array of 1TB WD Blue drives might be the better option, but if you're looking for a one-stop-shop for a single hard drive that will last you a long time, look no further.

2 out of 5 eggsSlow

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Cheap, high capacity.

Cons: Slowed my system way down. I was running on all SSD's, but when I needed to expand, I couldn't afford a terabyte of SSD, so I bought this. But now my system feels almost as slow as normal! Worse - often the system will 'hang' for 10 seconds or so, then I hear a thunking from the hard drive, then it kicks loose again.

Look elsewhere for a speedy disk. It hasn't failed yet, but neither am I pleased.

1 out of 5 eggsFailed

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: :(

Cons: Drive shows up in my BIOS as well as Device Manager, but will not show up in Disk management.
In Device Manager it shows up under other devices.. Windows 10 does not seem to be able to identify the drive and I can not find any drivers for it.
Drive is useless at this point... Nice waste of 160.00 bucks as well as about 4 hours time trying to find a fix..
Thanks

2 out of 5 eggsPotentially similar experience?

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: The (Caviar) Black drive family of drives delivers exceptional performance, when they work. I've used them (.5 - 1 TB) exclusively in systems I've built or purchased.

Cons: About 2 years ago, a Caviar black 750 GB drive failed under warranty. WD replaced the failed drive with a Caviar Blue of similar size. Attempts to get this issue resolved - I requested a Caviar Black - with WD fell on deaf ears, and about 1 month later they stopped responding to my requests.

My current desktop system (Core i7-4770K) with Samsung EVO 256 GB SSD (C drive), 2x 1 TB Black HD, and the 750 GB Blue, Win 8.1 Pro 64-bit, has become very unreliable - multiple BSODs daily. A popular technical forum suggests that the pattern of failures points to a hard drive, which is very plausible: the BSODs started when a clicking sound began at boot or system returning from sleep.

Frankly, I'm torn concerning whether to continue with WD Black or, shudder, Seagate’s SATA hard drives. If I stick with WD, the 2 TB Black will be my choice.

In summary, I'm a computer architect with lengthy experience of designing very large scale enterprise systems. Storage reliability essentially hasn't been an issue. Drive interface has been SCSI and more recently Fibre Channel at the frontend interface. Storage systems, typically RAID 5 have been in constant operation for up to 5 years.

Other Thoughts: I may consider replacing all HDs in my current system with enterprise level SCSI and Fibre Channel versions by Seagate. The much higher cost may be worth the peace of mind.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: WD Black 3TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD3003FZEX

Pros: Very quick and responsive. Quieter than I originally thought it would be. I use it as my bulk storage drive so I dont notice any excessive clicking like some people. I've never seen it go above 42C with very little airflow across it.

Cons: Very heavy if you care about that thing. Much slower than an SSD, but that's to be expected.
