5 out of 5 eggsSimply irresistible..

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Simple to setup. Very simple. Plug it in. Computer Management. Disk Managment. Initialize as a GPT (GUID Partition Table). Poof! 3 TB of storage. 3,000,457,228,288 bytes, or 2.72 TB according to Explorer. Still bigger than a 2 TB. So, why argue about it?

People complain about noise.... It's no louder than my 500 GB WD black... and it's quiet too.

Temp is right at 31.0 °c. Nice and cool.

Super shiny! If you are like Steve Carell from T40YOV, then this will amaze you too. "It's so shiny!"

Cons: Since it's larger than 2 TB, it can't be a bootable drive. Get over it. Not worth deducting any eggs.

Other Thoughts: I'll be using this for archived storage.. movies, photos, music, ROM backups, etc.. so I don't expect to put a whole lot of stress to this drive.. but these transfer speeds are ridiculously fast. Get one. Get twelve. You need them.

4 out of 5 eggsLoud and proud

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good data read/write times. Bought to store my entire steam library and whatever else can fit after that. Playing games and whatnot, I need to load a lot of files. This gets the job done better than smaller drives I've used (500MB) despite the close seek/read times.

Cons: Loud, very, thought I was going to have to RMA. Must have missed that in the reviews when I bought it. I'd have gladly paid a bit more to be without that aspect of it

2 out of 5 eggsNOT COMPATIBLE WITH LOCKING CABLES

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast & quiet - previous machines I built with these drives (500GB &1TB) are very responsive and was happy with them. Price per GB isn't much more than standard performance drives and they now come in huge capacities. My "raptors" are better, but these were close at a reasonable cost and higher capacity.

Cons: I read all the Newegg reviews when I bought this in September - no mention of the locking SATA cable issue (there are several now). I first thought my drive had a mfg defect - no "shell" around the SATA data and power connectors. When I studied the Newegg photo it was the same - never crossed my mind to even check that it had a "shell". Contacted WD and they told me this is done for better "backplane" compatibility (whatever that means). This is supposed to be a performance DESKTOP drive - and desktop use requires the use of a cable - preferably a locking cable (really a requirement for my case). Really like the performance / capacity / price of this drive but I'm not pleased that my cables don't lock - thinking of getting a 3-4TB Seagate instead.

Other Thoughts: My drives mount at 90 degrees in my case which means I must use a 90 degree cable to allow case side to close. My 90 degree cable with a bend doesn't stay connected to this drive very well - actually fell off once. WD told me that there is a special cable that will work with these drives - but told me they don't have any. They gave me a part number and some vendors to try but none of them have it either. I am currently planning to make my own "Jerry Rig" cable retainer.

5 out of 5 eggsSolid hard disk

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Plenty of space, fast (for a mechanical drive), and reliable. I was deciding between this hard drive and a refurbished Seagate Constellation drive. The refurbished drive was a lot cheaper, but you get what you paid for. In the end, I settled on the WD Black because of the warranty. It's very hard to find a hard drive that has a 5 year warranty. The hard disk is primary used for my VMs.

Cons: The hard drive does have chatter since it's a high performance drive. It's not as noisy as the Velociraptor, but it's very noticeable.

Other Thoughts: None

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: These drives are very fast. I added them to Thecus 2-Bay RAID 1 array and have been very happy with the performance.

Easily runs as a Plex server, FTP, Samba, NAS device.

Cons: If there were anything to complain about, would be the head chatter. While this can be unnerving to some, all the research i have found and my own experience point to it being a non-issue.

A-lot of movement is to be expected with 3TB of density.

Other Thoughts: To all those who say these drives are bad or not up to par, either you got the short straw, or you have other technical problems, most likely your technical abilities. TIP: Hire a professional to do your builds from now on.

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: We bought two of these and 1 was DOA. The other was easy to install and has worked great for about a week so far.

Cons: The other was easy to install and has worked great for about a week so far.

5 out of 5 eggsAfter 6 mos....

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: WD BLACK SERIES (WD3003FZEX) 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache (The Typhoon years ago has made good hard drives very expensive for the average consumer. Most are now made in China with limited success. If it is worth anything... this one was made in the Philippines after rebuilding. It works great and an amazing warranty. You pay for what you get.)

Cons: Nione

Other Thoughts: See if you can find where the drive is made.

4 out of 5 eggsHappy WD Black 3TB

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: -WD Black series with 5 year warranty (longer than most others)
-Good consistent performance. Happy for a high performance/capacity spinning drive for desktop.
-Has not crashed since having it installed almost a month ago. (honestly have never had any problems with WD black drives for the past 4 years which is why I am sticking with them compared to problematic Seagate drives I've encountered)

Cons: -More expense than other drives of similar capacity and specs (had a special coupon code which put it at a price point I was ready to spend for an upgrade during the holiday break)
-Slightly louder than previous WD Black 1TB and 2TB drives, but nothing I can really hear when it's running inside a case. (Not hearing the "click" sound that others are reporting)

Other Thoughts: -Drive arrived in a sealed factory antistatic bag > inside a Pregis ChamberPak air tube cushioned container > inside another few airbags > inside a shipping box (which is better than what I have seen others use). Arrived in about 4 days after ordering during the bad XMas peak shipping period.
-When installed in my Win7 rig as an extra data drive to hold videos. I did have to use GPT partition to recognize all 3TB (which is no biggie and done through Windows diskmgmt.msc)
-Used a free Acronis True Image WD edition from WD website to clone an existing drive to this new one (to retain all the data and timestamps of folders/files).
-According to HD Tune, I am getting a consistent 99 MB/Sec with 9.6 ms access time on an *older* SATA controller. My last 1TB WD black drive on the same much older SATA controller would start at 110Mb/sec but would drop in a speed curve to 50Mb/sec with 12.5ms access time.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black Series- The Return Of the King

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast, quiet and took no time to get up and running.
3 Tb hard drive space

Cons: First one had to be RMA'd because BIOS couldnt recognize it. Second one ran perfectly
Does not actually rule over Middle Earth

Other Thoughts: A little bummed I had to wait to get all my music and videos back but it was worth it. Newegg gave me no trouble with anything and took it back immediately and sent a new one. Bravo newegg!

2 out of 5 eggsObnoxiously Loud

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: It's still working.

Cons: Extremely loud. When in use the drive makes an array of noise from loud grinding to high pitch whistling.

Other Thoughts: After putting a new tower together I started to hear a ton of hard drive noise. I ran some tests drive tests and was shocked to realize that it was this drive that I had just purchased making all the noise and not a drive I was reusing from an older tower.

Funny how some users report the drive as silent and others like me are plagued with ones that are obnoxious from the day we get them while all tests are saying that the drive is in perfect condition.
