2 out of 5 eggsLoud drives

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Good amount of space; Fast shipping from Newegg

Cons: As many other reviewers have mentioned, there is an unacceptable amount of clicking and tapping noise from these drives while seeking. Even when a Windows folder is open at a location on these drives, sitting idle, there will be a double click that oscillates about every 6 to 8 seconds. Then when seekign it is almost like a deep grinding noise. It's pretty nasty.

Other Thoughts: I wish I'd read these reviews first. These drives should come with a free set of noise cancelling headphones

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black Series 3 TB

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Silent, big space. Cheap.

Cons: Dead Rising 3 came free with it. I would rather get the HDD discounting the stupid game.

3 out of 5 eggsNot without issues

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 3Tb of space (2.72 usable in Win)
Reasonable temps
Sale price - reduced by $50
5 year warranty

Cons: Click, CLICK, clackitty-CLACK, TAP, TAP, TAP, click, click, CLICK, CLICK, Gizzzhhhherrrrrrr, CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-CLACK-Gizzzhhhherrrrrrr ... hopefully you get the point. These drives are NOT quiet.

Other Thoughts: I've owned this drive just over a week. I also have the 2Tb model. The selling points for me on the blacks have been the 5 year warranty; overall far better reliability with WD than the other major brand (S******); slightly higher transfer speeds; past history of performance, and mainly the fact that I've managed to pick them up cheaply on Newegg sales.

Crystal disk benchmark shows seq read of 149.3 and write of 144.8 MBps - avge about 12 - 14 MBps higher than a WD Blue I have. That's acceptable but not wow factor fast, and kind of underwhelming considering the cheaper price of the Blue line drives. I'm testing on a good system with an i7 4790 and 16 Gb RAM.

There are definitely issues with these drives. The con of both the 2 and 3Tb version of the WDx000xFZEX Black drive line is the noise. It isn't noisy sitting idle. But when accessing, seeking or in heavy use it makes a click, clack, tap, grrrr-ing noise that is annoying and gets even more irritating over time. I walked into a room adjoining my office and it was still clearly audible in the second room.

Because of the $50 off price tag I thought I'd gamble that this 3Tb model would be quieter than the 2Tb version I own. It is not. I'm on the fence as to whether to return this. I have been looking at noise dampening cases or solutions, but then I thought why spend more to go down that road? It negates the saving of picking up a the drive on sale.

WD also offers the 3Tb enterprise class WD3000F9YZ drive, which I was leaning towards, because it doesn't seem to have the same reviewer complaints about the noise. Although it's listed as optimally storage for NAS and scale-out architectures, it may be the new go to option as a high warranty internal HDD for those with SSD's. But it was $30 more expensive then the 3Tb Black on sale I'm kicking myself that I didn't pay the extra for that drive. My main use is vid editing, and I have my OS and programs on an SSD. So I need a reliable media drive with very good transfer speeds, backed up by a solid warranty. I may still return this and opt for the enterprise class WD3000F9YZ.

Or this may just end up becoming an expensive storage drive in an external enclosure.

Buyer beware.

2 out of 5 eggsVERY LOUD,

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Decent speed and value

Cons: VERY LOUD READ AND WRITE. I received this hard drive from WD, and while it has average performance, it it is extremely loud when seeking, reading or writing. This can be heard through the case, and is very disruptive. I don't think it's defective, just loud by design. I'm looking at other hard drives now and might just return this one. It's very disruptive.
Also, on a side note, black hard drives in my opinion are not justified by the hype or raised price tag, as the boost in performance is almost unnoticeable from their blue model, or any other brand 7200 rpm for that matter.

Other Thoughts: Disappointed in WD, as previous RMA's have been extremely difficult, even in one case when they said they would 2-day ship me a new hard drive, but when I called a week later, said they had 'no record' of the conversation and said I made it up. Not appreciated, and DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE USING WD IN THE FUTURE!!!!!!!!!!!

3 out of 5 eggsClicks....

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Love the size...wish I would have purchased it over Black friday instead of waiting a week longer and paying a bit more...

Cons: Clicks. I've only been using this hard drive for 2 weeks and it clicks. It doesn't click all the time, only at certain points (I think when it's writing, still not 100% on that) but it does click and to me it's noticeably annoying.

1 out of 5 eggsNEWEGG FALSE ADVERTISING

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: SITTING IN PACKAGE, waiting to purchase the rest of items before I build.

Cons: I purchased this hard drive last week, Newegg advertised that this item came with a copy of DEADRISING 3. Upon receiving hard drive in mail yesterday, it did not come with the game card it had advertised. Online return helpdesk denied any acknowledgement of the deal that ultimately made me pull the trigger.

5 out of 5 eggsArrived on time Flawless install

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Lots of data storage for the price. Works flawlessly with my native drive to give me additional space without slowing down my computer.

Cons: It was a bit more complicated than just plug and play, but after looking up a web help site installation and set-up went flawlessly. Also, I knew this product came without a SATA cable, but it would've been nice if it was included.

5 out of 5 eggsReally great fast drive!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: It works! The3 TB Black Series I purchased is very fast. It is reliable and also very quiet.
It installed effortlessly and Windows 7 addresses the entire 3 TB after you initializing with GPT.

Cons: You pay a premium for top Black Series drives but it is worth in in perofrmance, reliability and 5 year warranty.
No other cons to mention.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This drive is faster than the 1 TB drive it replaced. The five year warranty is excellent. Easy setup using the free Acronis software from the Western Digital web site.

Cons: I have not found any cons so far but I will update this review if I have any issues.

Other Thoughts: I used Acronis Clone Drive to copy over my old 1 TB drive. I recommend using this free software provided by Western Digital.
