5 out of 5 eggsGreat Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This drive is faster than the 1 TB drive it replaced. The five year warranty is excellent. Easy setup using the free Acronis software from the Western Digital web site.

Cons: I have not found any cons so far but I will update this review if I have any issues.

Other Thoughts: I used Acronis Clone Drive to copy over my old 1 TB drive. I recommend using this free software provided by Western Digital.

1 out of 5 eggsDRIVE STARTED CLICKING 3 WEEKS AFTER PURCHASE

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Size, build quality, warrant is supposedly 5 years (but read below on how WD can unilaterally shorten the warranty to 7 months).

Cons: The drive started making a noise like a single click which lasted a 1/2 second every 6 seconds or so about three weeks after purchase (when the drive was filled 1/3 to capacity). I ran WD's diagnostic software, both the basic test and the extended test said the drive was fine. But the clicking persisted. Four weeks and 5 days after purchase I called WD's tech support line and was told that the drive is defective if it continued to "click" after the SATA data cable was removed and the system powered back up with the power cable connected. Thus, 5 days after Newegg's return period lapsed, WD told me I had a defective drive. So I can't return the drive to Newegg (without an exception to policy, which they haven't granted), and WD wants to send me a re-certified drive with a 6 month warranty. Even though I paid for a new drive and a 5 year warranty. I am really ANGRY that I will only get 7 months warranty and somebody else's re-certified drive (maybe with its problems fixed, but maybe not) instead of a new drive, which is what I paid for a little more than 4 weeks ago.

Other Thoughts: I have only purchased WD Black and WD RE drives since my bad experiences with Maxtor and Hitachi in the early 2000s. Perhaps its time to change drive manufacturers...

4 out of 5 eggsSolid Drive, But Random Clicks

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Plug and play, it's a HDD. ATTO Disk Benchmark showed up to 164/180 MB per sec write/read- pretty good.

Cons: I can't figure out when the clunking is happening, but it is. During write/read operations it is fine, but when basically idle, it makes random clicking sounds- one or two pops at a time. It's the same sound heard on long write/read operations on a fragmented drive, but this is a virgin drive and the sound is random, not associated with direct write/reads. Strange. I can't figure it out, not sure if it's worth an RMA (this is a data drive, not OS), but I have to take an egg off for it. Hoping that it takes care of itself as time goes on.

1 out of 5 eggsVERY poor success rate

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: long warranty and large amount of space
Other than that there are none with the physical drive as I never got a chance to even use it because it failed while preparing the drive for use.

Cons: Drive DIED while preparing it for use. I've bought many Western Digital Blacks in my time and have never have had any fail so quickly. I am careful when handling the drives.

Other Thoughts: I ordered these and one had failed within a couple weeks. I requested an RMA on the dead drive and the replacement drive was not very well packaged in my opinion. the tiny box it was shipped in was just big enough for the drive and the air bag they pack them in. I first plugged in in via a USB and it didn't show the full capacity. I then plugged it into the motherboard and went to format it so that i could rebuild my raid setup. Before I could even start using the drive, it had started making the click of death, though not very loud at all then the drive was no longer recognized in windows and if BIOS even saw the drive, it reports 0 capacity.

2 out of 5 eggsNot a robust drive. Vibrates.

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Other people say its fast.
Has a longer warranty period.

Cons: Noisy (low pitch vibration noise and loud head seeking noise).
Bad firmware gets confused due to incompatible SATA drivers on PC resulting in overheated drive.

Other Thoughts: Not worth the extra money. I would not recommend this drive. When I put this drive in, my pc would hang up whilte trying to format this drive. If I booted with this drive attached, the drive would go into some sort of crazy mode causing it to get so hot that I could barely hold the drive. Turned out that the drivers on my win7 64bit were bad because after a windows re-install, this drive worked. But tells you a lot about poor firmware error handling and can easily damage the drive due to over heating.

2 out of 5 eggsBad HDD

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast and lots of storage

Cons: HDD died on me and WD Support wasn't much help. I guess I did all the things they would tell someone to do as they suggested RMA almost immediately.

I've only had the HDD running for a week. I won't touch Seagate HDDs as I've had too many problems with them in the past and this is my first WD Black and let's just say that this isn't leaving a positive impression.

5 out of 5 eggsWD3003FZEX

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 2nd Gen WD Black
-High Res. Controller
-No Touch Ramp Load Technology
-Pretty good Sequential Read/Write
-It's responsive and minimizes stutter by few margin when playing games
-3TB is enough storage for games, movies, music, and pictures
-Good reliability and durability
-Excellent for gamers who want to store massive game applications, especially working on content creation for adobe photoshop as well as adobe premiere.
-Much faster than SEAGATE Barracuda 1TB

Cons: -Little bit noise during Read/Write operation due to Multi-Platter Disk
-It's not as fast as most modern SSDs
-It cannot boot into Windows, compared to SSD
-It'll eat a little bit more power than Single-Platter Disk
-800GB per Platter Density
-Still have moving parts
-A bit pricey, but you get decent storage and performance.
-Still stuck with bottleneck SATA 6Gb/s Host Interface
-i wish Western Digital will change it to PCI-Express interface or SATA Express interface to decrease latency in order to achieve faster read/write performance. Thus, we save time and money!

Other Thoughts: In order to achieve 3TB storage, you must have motherboard that supports UEFI mode in BIOS and you must set partition table to GPT, other you'll end up with around 2.2TB.

Maximum capacity in Windows 7 will be capped at 2.72TB.

HD Tune Pro Bencmark:

Minimum: 125.9MB/s
Average: 149.5MB/s
Maximum: 172.2MB/s

Access Time: 9.2ms
Burst Rate: 264.6MB/s
CPU Usage: -1.0%

Crystal Disk Mark (1GB Test):

Sequential-
Read: 153.6MB/s
Write: 150.7MB/s

Keep in mind, speed varies and not all drives will run at similar sequential read/write and even random 4k read/write queue depth of one. Access time is very important when it comes to transferring large data when opening multiple files at the same time.

4 out of 5 eggsNot bad

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Pretty good speed
lots of space

WESTERN DIGITAL!!!
(big fan only had one out of probably 30 in the past 10 years fail)

Cons: not meant for RAID configurations (in the details)
somewhat loud under loads (sounds like old win 98 PC that was booting) key words being "under load" not all the time.

Other Thoughts: Not a bad drive overall...not as fast as SSD but that's why everyone puts their OS on an SSD nowadays.
I have a 1TB and this 3TB is 2 different PC's.

3TB- 2 partitions no OS 1TB used 1.75TB free
Min-105MB/s Max-180MB/s Avg-150MB/s
Access time 12.2ms Burst rate 330MB/s

5 out of 5 eggsGood fast drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD3003FZEX 3TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Great drive that seems pretty fast and capable for an HDD. Obviously it is nowhere near the speed of an SSD, but if I benchmark this compared to my WD Green drive this one comes out on top easily.

Cons: As this drive doesn't hibernate or sleep as much as say, a WD Green, it does use more power in the long run. If you don't need the extra speed than this could be an issue, so if you just want to store media files than go with a cheaper drive like the Green. If you're doing something like gaming that's more drive intensive than this is worth the extra coin (and that extra cost is substantial).

Other Thoughts: This drive is a very capable drive, but also a very expensive drive. As with most things; make sure you need what you're paying extra for before you put in that order. Just storing pictures and music isn't going to require a more expensive drive like this.
