5 out of 5 eggsNo problems so far

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: Great price, easy to install, quiet.

Cons: Came shipped without a SATA cable. Inflated packing bubble was deflated so little or no shipping protection.

Other Thoughts: I was a little reluctant to purchase this after reading the reviews which included some negative comments about the drive being noisy and not lasting long. It has only been in use now for about a week but it is quiet (if I put my ear right next to it I can hear a little clicking as the disc is read) with no vibration. I would recommend this product so far, especially at this price. We use this in an NLE video capture and editing computer and it is working well for us so far.

1 out of 5 eggsHard drive melt down.

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: Smooth transaction via New Egg...great job selling that drive. As for the product....no pros.

Cons: The drive over heated, when I un-connected the sata Cable the connector broke off in the sata cable. This appears as physical damage to WD support...which they do not cover under warranty. When i try to explain to them that the physical damage was a direct result of the drive malfunctioning, they will hear none of that.

Other Thoughts: As an IT proffesional, I get that physical damage is not going to be covered. But when the physical damage occurs because of a malfunctioning Drive overheats and weakens the connector and it then breaks off...Is it just to hard to believe your customer?...is it just to hard to do the right thing WD? Will never buy your products again...

5 out of 5 eggsGood performance for a HDD

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: Better speeds than my old drive
Seems to have decent seek times
5 Year Warranty
No Problems so far.

Cons: It's not a SSD, but you would be paying significantly more for a 2TB SSD.

Other Thoughts: HDDs are still quite useful for mass storage and especially working with large files, the main benefit with an SSD over HDDs is random reads/writes. Getting a smaller SSD for a boot drive and a HDD for media storage (less used games, videos, audio, etc) is a pretty good combo.

After format it comes out to be around 1.81TB, not a huge surprise if you're familiar with HDDs but it's worth noting.

Bought it to replace a 6 year old dying 1.5TB drive, hopefully this one will last a while also.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent for the price

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: Got 4 drives and had a cheap ~6TB storage RAID array.

Cons: The array started fine for the first month then started to periodically slip into a deteriorated state or die from too many drives not being active. Unfortunately I was lazy and muttled through getting the system back up suspecting that I had merely misconfigured something. After a little over a year of ownership 1 drive is completely dead and the other 3 sound like an old car, leaving me concerned that the head is scratching the platters.

Other Thoughts: All drives purchased on November 17th of 2014 from Newegg (Yay order history)

A couple notes on the drives:
These drives were in the same computer until last week and at this point had been through one move (changed apartments). 9 Months at original location, 5 months at new location. Problems were experienced in original location but not super evident. I didn't notice the noise until I was moving the disks to a new computer to test if the computer they were in was the problem, so the noise -may- be poor handling during transition to new machine (highly unlikely in my opinion, but information for you to make decisions on). The sound however is not noticeable from my chair when the case is closed.

Note on tests performed:
Tests were performed on Ubuntu Server 15;

Used ` smartctl -a /dev/sdX -t permissive ` for SMART drive testing, permissive was added to attempt to get full details on the dead drive, it wasn't needed for the other 3 but I'm including it here for clarity.

Used ` dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/output b s=8k count=100k; rm -f /tmp/output ` to test writes to a mounted drive and ` hdparm -Tt /dev/sdX ` to test reads. Note that the dead drive could not be mounted for write testing and reported the below for hdparm testing:
> " read() hit EOF - device too small ; Timing buffered disk reads: read() hit EOF - device too small "

In conclusion;
If I were buying these drives again, I'd probably buy 1 more than I was planning to keep as a hot-spare in the array and do more diagnostics after the first failure rather than being lazy and waiting a little over a year to do a deep investigation.

1 out of 5 eggsNow Comes With Self-Destruct! Yay!

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: It's shiny, well it was...

Cons: This thing decided that it wanted to be Phoenix rather than a hard drive, and less than a minute into its operational life, it fulfilled its dream... This hard drive wasn't only DOA, it actually caught fire and scorched the circuitry underneath.

Other Thoughts: Nothing like watching a brand new PC belch black smoke and wondering what else could've been damaged...

4 out of 5 eggsIt is a HDD

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: Its 2tbs fairly cheap i normally use seagate products but i use them heavily so i decided to try the black series of drives I've only used second hand laptop wd drives so i knew they were some what reliable. Average transfer speeds of files depends on the file look at other thoughts. It can keep up with my normal workload which is normally 60gbs worth of stuff a day most of which ends of being deleted when finished with so its extra speed even as a secondary drive for things is nice not ssd fast but still better then what i was using.
Ive had no technical problems with the drive mainly annoyances, handles major tasks better than my 10year old drives it replaces outside of that does what any hdd does hopefully it will last past its warranty but so far so good.

Cons: Lots of ticking when i first used the drive after putting 8tbs on the drive its gotten better but is still there(all hdds I've ever own make the clicking sound but its very audible at almost 10ft away)
Very large compared to the desktop seagate drives i normally use can even use my usb housing on it if i needed too so i am forced to use a sata cable when i need it(2 of my seagate drives are only slightly thinker than it), also its more of an annoyance than a real problem.
I also find that its heavier than any other hdd I've owned, again more of an annoyance then a problem since it messed of the plastic housing it was meant to be in.

Other Thoughts: When filling up the drive a few times to test if it would die would always start writing at 500-600 mb/s for 10seconds transferring from a ssd, used fallout 4 a file i visit often transferred it until i filled the drive 4 times took only 4 hours as i was doing it manually hasnt failed i do this with all hdds i use filling them at least 4-5 times to check how they work or if they will fail.
I did grab the drive from a store as i needed that day and couldn't wait just wish in general pricing was better as i normally avoid wd in my own personal rigs to save a few bucks.

2 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: The drive is working at least, but not great....(see cons)

Cons: The hard drive makes weird noises (creeking noises) and this is suppose to be a "Performance" drive? It's louder than my old drive that is breaking down. I had made sure all the screws are tightly in place, and mounted correctly and stable, free of vibrations, and installed right. But the noises can still be heard from the device when it is in use. I don't know if the package was dropped, or damaged during delivery. It was placed right at my doorstep without a second thought of its value. I am very dissappointed in it. It is also made in Malaysia, and was on sale :/ I don't recommend you buy this one.

1 out of 5 eggsDOA. Newegg was worthless to resolve.

This review is from: WD Black 2TB Performance Desktop Hard Disk Drive - 7200 RPM SATA 6 Gb/s 64MB Cache 3.5 Inch - WD2003FZEX

Pros: -Drive would have been great, had it not been DOA.

Cons: Here's the short version:

1. I ordered a WD 2TB Black drive.
2. I paid $15 EXTRA for two-day shipping as I needed it immediately.
3. I received a physically damaged DOA drive.
4. The drive does not spin, it just buzzes. The plastic corners are shattered. It looks as if it was thrown at the floor. The anti-static bag had cuts from whatever the drive impacted.
5. I request an RMA/Refund after waiting in the chat queue for over 90 minutes. I state I will order a new drive while waiting for the RMA.
6. I get offered a $10 gift card to compensate me for the $15 i paid for shipping, and time wasted by having to open a case. Still a $5 LOSS to me.
7. I agree and as I proceed to order a new drive, it's now OUT OF STOCK.

Hope your experience goes better than mine did.

Other Thoughts: This has been just another one of many bad experiences I've had with Newegg lately.
