5 out of 5 eggsTop tier drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The pros are easy with these drives. First is reliability. I've owned WD Black drives for years and they have been running in a raid environment on a server. After nearly 5 straight years of running I had one die recently. I had to follow the procedure but it was replaced promptly. The rest of my Black drives (all of them between 500GB and 2TB) are running smoothly and constantly on a daily basis. I could rattle off lots of test numbers but lots of other folks have done that in their reviews. Suffice it to say that they are fast, though if you must know I used an 8 year old PC to test this drive and the transfer speeds were in the ~140MB/s range, which was limited by the age of the PC. In my experience they are fast and reliable.

Cons: As has been mentioned in other reviews their approach to replacement drives (if you replace a bad drive your replacement only has a 90 day warranty, which stinks). The other con is the price. A few short years ago 5 year warranties with hard drives from all manufacturers was standard. It's gone from 5 years to 1 year as the number of mechanical hard drive producers has declined. It's kind of underhanded imo but that's the way things are now.

Other Thoughts: If you want a solid drive this is an excellent option.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Because of Sata 3.0, read and write speed are awesome!

Cons: Makes me nervous because it makes the same noises your old 1990's hard drives make when it's accessing a lot of information.

Other Thoughts: All I buy is Western Digital Black. I have I have an older 1TB 32MB Cache and recently bought a 1TB 64MB Cache but neither make that old school grinding noise which causes me to wonder if it's normal and nothing to worry about.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: The Western Digital Black drives are absolutely one of the best drives out there for reliability. I have owned many and not a single one has died out on me. This particular one is extremely fast and quiet.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: None

1 out of 5 eggsloudest drive i have ever used

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: It seemed pretty fast, but it was hard to tell because I was so distracted by the noise. It also didn't stop working so there is that.

Cons: I have installed many hard drives over the years, and this one is by far the loudest. It sounds like a old floppy drive pr a milling machine. It is easily louder than my other 5 active drives (Seagate drives)

I can't even believe they sell this drive.

Other Thoughts: I should have stuck with Seagate.

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: GARBAGE

Cons: Could find no good

Other Thoughts: Hope this is not the start of the end of a relationship with WD... Seagate is starting to look pretty good!

5 out of 5 eggsFast but a little loud

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Primary drive in a new build. This drive is fast, 175 MB/s as compared to the 146 MB/s of the similar, spec wise) WD Green that is the secondary drive in my system. 5 year warranty is the longest I've seen for a drive, so it should be durable.

Cons: Noisier than most other drives I've used, but that is mostly during I/O operations. That also could be due to the type of case I'm using, so it may not be an issue for everyone. I'm used to it now, so no reason to deduct an egg.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far so good

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Reasonable price for good quality drive. Fast shipping. I'm only buying WD Black drives. I have had several and never had an issue. Why risk the cheaper drives for the few bucks savings?

Cons: New Egg shipping package a concern. Bubble pack that the OEM hard drives are shipped in had two cells busted on one side. Obviously package was dropped hard on that side and ruptured the cells. (I have had other arrive in the same package perfectly fine.) I immediately ran WD drive tests: SMART, Quick and Full. And then did a full format. Drive seems to be fine right now. Quiet and fast. But hard shock could have damaged bearings and will show up later.

Other Thoughts: New Egg needs a better shipping package.

5 out of 5 eggsExcelent Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: WD reliability, fast read/write speeds for a mechanical drive, WD reliability, very large capacity.

I have had several different brand of drives overs the years and WD has never let me down. I've had several Seagates, Hitachis, Samsungs, you name it, I've owned them and all eventually died on me. The WD 320gb HDD I replaced with this 2TB drive is over 10 years old with 10,000 hours of on time and still has all sectors intact.

Cons: None. WD makes the best drives out there and I will never purchase a different brand for my backup drives.

Other Thoughts: For being a mechanical HDD, this drive is fast. It took 5 hours to transfer 800GB of data.

3 out of 5 eggsFirst partition stays fast

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: My first partition stays relatively fast when defragged often with Defraggler by Piriform, over 64 MB/s read speed according to Defraggler's benchmark, just after defragging.

Cons: Second partition is slow after getting close to half full - even when defragged often, which is somewhat OK if you are patient and all you do is download hardware and software upgrades and other like data where read - write speeds are not so important.

My second partition is a little over half full and Defraggler, from Piriform, benchmarks read speed on the second partition at an average of 4.6 MB/s after defragging with Defraggler [Windows 7 64bit] before defragging it averages below ~ 3.36 MB/s read speed - and I defrag fairly often [2 to 7 days].

I do not like WD's shifty 5 year warranty, where if you submit an RMA and get a second drive that only has a 90 day warranty for this drive.

Other Thoughts: To Jacob M. that gave a review on 9/8/2014:
If this drive is a second drive for installing and playing games from and raw video footage make a partition* no larger than 300GB. On that partition install and run games. Defrag often and it will remain very fast if you leave 45GB free [to allow room for Windows defrag - Microsoft demands 15% free for proper defrag, or you might not be able to defrag at all - I know this from, years ago, when I was a computer consultant to businesses. You would be surprised at how little businesses know regarding computers].
* The First partition will be 300GB

Part of my build [for the technical gurus out there]:
Power Supply: Corsair TX650M
CPU: Intel i5 3570K
Motherboard: Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
RAM: 16GB GSkill CAS 9
SSD: Intel 335, 240GB
Hard Drive: single WD Black, partitioned [primarily for games, storage and back up]

Note: Other Information: Defraggler is much better than Windows defrag, however, it is VERY slow when doing a regular defrag on a slow drive or partition, it is very fast when doing a quick defrag, even on a slow drive or partition. I use regular [default] defrags. This is not an advertisement for Defraggler.

NOTE: I know that many people read these reviews when making a decision about what hard drive to purchase and I have written this with them in mind.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 2 TB for game storage

Built for Performance

never had even close to a TB of space. Have no idea to do with it other than storage :D

top of the hard drive will make you say "oooo! shiney!"

Packaging involves the HDD being in a anti-static, sealed bag, which is inside a thick air tube packaging.

Cons: The HHD does lick, only clicks on writes or reads but are very minor and not very loud and can be easily ignored.

The air bubbles inside the packaging don't pop... :(

Other Thoughts: Hell of a drive, currently using for high-capacity game storage for steam and video editing and misc. storage
