2 out of 5 eggsfailed in 9 months. unacceptable

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: drive was fast.... it was loud, but the noise it made was like a race car with open headers. i ran the drive with at least a single 120mm fan on it, so temps were never over 30 or 40 C.

only reason it has 2 starts is because i see its potential. i WANT this drive to work. i love this drive....but 9 months life? and i assume the replacement drive isnt going to have a warranty? sweet.

Cons: drive failed in 9 months. all i used it for was 600 gigs of steam games, and things like team speak, pictures off my phone, music. i have a SSD as my OS drive, and a 1 tera 4 or 5 year old WD blue thats still working great....it wanst even used for page file.... i used the file from the old OSes install on my blue drive. and it died. wow

drive starting to make stepping motor noises.... WWWEEEERRR WOOOOOWWWEEEEEOOWWOOOO followed by massive raw rear errors, sector corruption, and unrecoverable sectors. epic.

caught it literally as it started.... i know what bad noises are, booted up HDtune and it didnt look good. pulled all my data off... i didnt have room for my games, had to delete all of them.... but i did get my data.

and then it went offline under windows and wasnt able to be seen by BIOS. great. seems like the drive would start our "ok" then get worse and worse till it just gave up and spun down.

seems 50% of people come back after 30 days to 12 months with bad drives.... the other 50% have good drives.

so what your telling me is WD's manufacturing "mess up" rate is BLOODY HALF!!??! yes, yes i am.

Other Thoughts: im 3 years into a computer science degree.... ive built over 20 computers, and im just a general nerd. ive never had a HDD die this fast. not in my machines or my friends or my builds. ive used mainly 1 tera WD blue drives.....

combine that bit of data with the fact that theirs a review out questioning the drives geometry. apparently under linux, which is able to get more access to hardware. than winblows 7, the drive is using advanced format. this is the system on how the heads seek.

its not as good as normal format which has had 30+ years to get better...... so it causes more rotations... more wear. however, a drive with a 5 year warranty should be able to last at least 5 years.... and i EXPECT life after that 5 years, a hard drive CANT fail. its critical to the PC. if it fails, a server could crash. this server controls traffic lights, or wall street. given they use enterprise drives and not consumer...... but why not build everything enterprise? you only need one set of tooling.... less slave labor..... more profit.

im not sure if i want the same drive back for my RMA. can i get 6 of the old WD blue drives im running? ill just RAID them up....

cuz i dont want a replacement drive to fail in a year again.

5 out of 5 eggsHighly recommend!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Fast, quiet and very reliable.

Cons: I was a little disappointed with the noise-floor of these drives on the read/write process. I was expecting them to be silent, but there is some drive activity noise. Not a deal breaker, my case does a good job at diminishing it enough that it doesn't bother me too much.

Other Thoughts: Been a avid user of WD drives for years, and yet again they are my go-to drives. I've rarely had a problem with any WD drive I have purchased, and knock on wood, I hope the same for these.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat drive though one problem

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Great drive fast and quite.

Cons: the sata connector I used did not fit properly in there. Like it fits into the drive but won't stay into the drive. Does not make a statisfying click noise signaling that its fit snuggly into the drive. Took some work to make sure it stayed in but it can be done

Other Thoughts: other the sata connection hiccup its a great drive

5 out of 5 eggsGreat drive!

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This is a great hard drive. I bought this to house hundreds of games for convenience.

Plenty of speed and space. I Benchmarked it at a average of a transfer rate of 149.6 MB/s on HD Tune, my WD Blue 1 TB drive had 130.6 MB/s average.) It does "feel" a little faster in terms of load times and responsiveness compared to the 1TB WD Blue.

Cons: Nitpicking here, it does run a little warm compared to my other drives. It idles at 40c after it's been running for a while, never seems to get higher even under load. My 1TB WD Blue came in at 31c. The cooling is decent in my case, I'm using a Rosewill Thor V2 with the fan speeds at their minimum settings.

It's not loud, but it is audible under load compared to my other drives. I don't have a problem with that though.

Despite the slight cons if you can even call them cons, they're not enough for me to take off eggs as the drive has performed great.

Other Thoughts: This is a nice hard drive. I've never had problems with Western Digital over the course of 10+ years of owning their drives. They always have been reliable for me and I'm hoping this one will be as well going into the future. So far, so good!

5 out of 5 eggsSolid Performer

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Very reliable
FAST performance for a Magnetic drive!
Handles temps no problem

Cons: Costs a little more but WELL WORTH IT!!!

Other Thoughts: I formatted this drive when it showed up and NEVER had to do that again. No disk repairs needed or any issues with partition table in over 5 years!!! One thing to note is that much of hard drive failure comes from lack of education. Basically people don't know the things that cause drive failure so if you are having bad luck with that I would read up on it.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: A great upgrade, coming from a Seagate 1TB.

Cons: Too loud during reads and especially writes.

Other Thoughts: Make sure to use the backup program provided by Western Digital and Acronis to clone your hard drive, if you are planning to do such action. I tried various cloning tools and the former seemed to only work, as the other tools didn't flag the partitions correctly.

5 out of 5 eggsAmazing hard drives

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD2003FZEX 2TB 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This drive is amazing with its 64mb cache 7200rpm speed and that it is a 2TB Black WD hard drive. Never had issues with any HD from WD and this one is no different. If you are looking for a 2TB hard drive this one is a great one to go with. I got it at 139 but it was worth, you can get them at different prices when they are on sale so look out for that.

Cons: None
