5 out of 5 eggs1 TB Hard Drive

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: I recently built my first PC and my original plan was to use a SSD for my OS and a good hard drive for my storage. I ordered this drive for my storage and a 250GB SSD for my OS. I thought that would be a good set up until I tried to load my OS on the SSD. I guess I was unlucky with my SSD because for some reason I couldn't load my OS on it. The drive must have had some type of issue unknown to me and I was pretty let down since I had my new computer built and a new copy of Windows 10 Pro Full Edition ready to install.

I thought about it and I decided to load the OS on my new WD 1 TB Black Hard Drive that I originally bought for my storage drive. I hooked the drive up in my new PC, booted to my Windows 10 disc, and installed the OS on my WD drive. I figured i'd try it on the mechanical drive and see how it performed and I was pleasantly surprised at how fast this drive is. It boots up quickly in Windows 10 Pro and since I had problems with my original SSD I think i'll change my plans and stick with this drive as my main hard drive. I like it so much that I ordered a second WD Black drive just like it to use as a back up.

For anyone who doesn't know, the Black series from WD is their performance line of hard drives and this one is fast for a mechanical drive. I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a 1TB hard drive.

Cons: None

Other Thoughts: So far this drive has been a pleasure to use in my new PC.

4 out of 5 eggsNo packaging?!?

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: This is the second WD Black 1TB drive I've owned. My previous drive has worked quite well for music production for the last few years. Therefore, I'm hoping the new one will give me equal performance.

Cons: Apparently these drives from Newegg come without any packaging? I just received my drive today, and it came wrapped in some bubble wrap, and a Newegg shipping box. What happened to the packaging from WD that includes the warranty and owners info, and the mounting screws and jumper? I'm relatively annoyed that this was NOT disclaimed anywhere in the item description. I will be calling customer service tomorrow to see where my packaging went. To WD I'll gladly give 5/5. But to Newegg I'll give 1/5 for not being upfront about non-factory packaging. Not cool, guys.

5 out of 5 eggsIt's WD ... you can't go wrong

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: 1. They work great.

2. Good storage to price ratio.

3. 64 MB Cache

4. Using 4 of these for a RAID 10 setup.

Cons: (None)

Other Thoughts: I have owned nothing but WD Black drives. I had an 80 GB that went a touch over four years before finally dying (many years ago), but the last six months I had a ticking seeker of death, so I had plenty of warning to keep my data backed up until the seeker finally died.

I did a build for a friend. That drive is 5 years old and still strong.

I did a build for my father. That drive is 4 years old and still strong.

My old rig ran 3 750 GB drives (two in RAID 0 and one as a bootable back-up). Those drives are 6.5 years old and still going strong, with no SMART errors.

This is why I stick with WD. The drives last a long, long time ... and in the rare event that they decide to croak, you have plenty of warning.

5 out of 5 eggsPutting all my trust in this drive... *Fingers crossed!*

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Supposedly very fast and good for gaming storage

I have researched for a few days which drive I should choose, this one had caught my eye repeatedly.

Cons: It's too soon to tell. I went ahead and bought this drive because I need enough time to re-download all my games. I Previously lost my old 1tb baby... :'( Anywho, I was very sceptical hitting that "Place Order" button due to all the reviews of people getting DOA drives and ones that screw up after only a few months.. That is VERY scary to me. I hate losing data.

Other Thoughts: I will update this review as soon as it gets here, and you better believe i'm going to update if anything goes wrong! Only because I didn't know what to believe from all the mixed reviews...

Hope your drives live up to my expectations, Western Digital!

1 out of 5 eggsBe Careful with DOAs

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: Price was about what one would have paid 4 years ago for a high quality 1TB drive. I was buying 2TB blacks off the retail shelf for $99 then.

Cons: Got a new retail version of the drive, put it in a new - 2 week old - Dell 8700 (UEFI), with 8.1 and an i7, before attempting to format it and clone the installed OS (is on a Seagate).

The computer wouldn't boot with the drive in, telling me the system was corrupted and I had to reinstall the OS.

Unplugged the drive (disconnected the new SATA/power cables), checked the bios, made sure everything was set up right, and tried again. The PC finally booted without issue once the drive was out.

Then, after several more attempts with the drive hooked up as internal or external, I got it to work, and formatted it as GPT. That was it. The drive snap-in started displaying errors but would never see it correctly. I couldn't format it, change it, etc. .

OK, off to a Win 7 Pro machine. Couldn't get the drive to be recognized so I started the RMA process. However, after 30 minutes I came back and finally saw it in Disk Mgmt. This time I tried to set it up as MBR, and do a quick NTFS format. No good. Drive mgmt "not responding" and the management console crashed.

Long story short, it's garbage. At least I don't have to pay return shipping on this loser... Hoping the replacement will work.

Other Thoughts: I have at least 20+ WD drives, as well as Toshiba, Hitachi, REAL Samsung, and even Seagate.

I've been vocal in my disdain for Seagate after many crashes, but of the last 7 WD drives I've purchased in the last 18 months, 5 have been losers. Four 3TB Red drives failed within 24 hours, and now this one is basically DOA since it never "worked".

WD has fallen a long way, and remember, Red drives are basically just green drives with a higher price and *maybe* tweaked firmware.

I know it's a gamble with drives and shipping (the outer box looked beat), but this was a protected retail package, not a bare drive.

If the next drive fails, I'm not sure what I'll do with WD. These guys are all going downhill fast, with higher prices and poor quality. Large volume SSDs - at reasonable prices - can't come soon enough IMO, but I know that's still years away.

5 out of 5 eggsBeyond Outstanding

This review is from: WD BLACK SERIES WD1003FZEX 1TB 7200 RPM 64MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive

Pros: These drives are ultra-fast, and ultra reliable. The Black series drives from WD are the best in the business. 5-year warranty

Cons: Are you kidding? There are none.

Other Thoughts: The Black series is a tad more expensive than the Blue or Green series, but operationally far superior
