5 out of 5 eggsExcellent Tivo upgrade!

Pros: It works.
Good shipping and packaging.

Cons: No cons that I've seen.

Other Thoughts: I used this to upgrade my Tivo Premiere. It's been rock solid so far (5 months?)

3 out of 5 eggsWD what is going on

Pros: They're quiet, run really cool, large.

Cons: Bought 2 of these, installed one in my HTPC and started moving over data, big mistake- Before I could get all my data onto it and start the conversion to software RAID the drive died and took a ton of my data with it. My fault for not following best practices and keeping the data on the original drives until the RAID was operational.

Eventually got the RMA back from WD, replacement drive has big sticker stating "RECERTIFIED", thanks WD for replacing my brand new drive I paid full price for with a "fixed" used drive.

Other Thoughts: Just upgraded a bunch of equipment at home, and was taking care of some old hardware issues at the same time, long story short I had 4 RMAs going in the past month, here's how they did-

Newegg GB 990FX RMA- Replaced quickly, new board.
XFX Vid card RMA- Replaced quickly, free upgrade on replacement from 7950 to R9 280, card is brand new.
WD HD RMA(x2)- Sent out before XFX RMA, got back well after XFX RMA came back, emailed back and forth with WD because they didn't notify me when it shipped, when I asked they said it shipped but had no tracking #, and they sent me a "used" drive to replace a brand new drive. Other RMA drive is unrelated, old 3TB that died quite a while ago and I finally got around to sending in because warranty almost out.

After numerous failed drives from IBM, Maxtor, Hitachi, and especially Seagate over the years I became a solid WD fan, now I guess the law of averages is kicking in, this purchase was to replace a failed 1TB green, a failing 2TB green, and a failed 3TB green. I can't wait until SSDs get a little cheaper so I can finally stop playing the HD shuffle.

BTW- I'm in charge of multiple SAS, NAS, Server arrays, and will be re-evaluating our nearly religious use of WD Reds.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent $/GB

Pros: - Large
- Quiet (all HDDs should be unless they're broken)

Cons: - None

Other Thoughts: Paid a premium, it's worth it. I went for a cheap HDD last time and it started doing weird things within about 3 months. This one is still going strong.

1 out of 5 eggsNewegg - what the heck!

Pros: Great drives (I have at least 8 of them). They all perform great. My one egg rating is for newegg and never receiving my drives.

Cons: In my latest order of 2 drives, newegg never shipped them to me. Tracking says they arrived at my "porch" but then continued to several other states and cities over a period of weeks... I NEVER received the drives and it appears they are still traveling...

Other Thoughts: I have tried to contact newegg to no avail. The only thing that seems to work is generating an RMA - but that's useless since I never received the drives... I have made hundreds of successful purchases through newegg over the years so I should take this in stride but this is surreal.

4 out of 5 eggsnot working with Verison FIOS Motorola DVR

Pros: good value would have rated higher if it worked with my dvr

Cons: Doesn't work with Verizon FIOS Motoroloa DVR QIP 7232
I'd suggest staying away from all Advanced Format type hard disks if you are in a similar position as me.

Was able to test / swap a older WD Black model that was conventional in that respect and it was picked up and working with no other issues.

Other Thoughts: other DVR's may be fine with it

1 out of 5 eggsNot Responding.

Pros: Size and Price.

Cons: I use this for streaming movies. and I woke up this morning and double clicked the drive and it is not responding and 4tb is alot of files to lose, hopefully I can get it to spin to get my files off of it.. First time having a problem with western digital.

Other Thoughts: Upset.

5 out of 5 eggsExcellent drive for DIY 4TB TiVo upgrade

Pros: I've been using it in my TiVo Premiere XL (model# 748000) for about 6 weeks now after upgrading the stock 1TB drive (157 HD hours) to this giving me total of 640 HD hours. Excellent performance so far. I've added nearly 250 HD hours of recordings since the upgrade and everything is recording and playing back fine.

Gave it 5-stars for the great performance and noiseless operation. I no longer have to worry about the TiVo hard drive filling up often...and I'm recording lots of shows to my heart's content. And of course I no longer have to archive recordings (using kmttg) as frequently - in fact haven't archived anything even once since the upgrade.

I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to go through the very technical process of 4TB TiVo drive DIY upgrade detailed here - go to forum and search for 4TB Premiere DIY (showthread.php?t=513785)

The other thing I'd mention is that many people who reviewed this and gave bad feedback are not really applying this drive the way it was intended to be used. The AV in the model name stands for AudioVideo. This drive is primarily intended to be used in AudioVisual equipment like DVRs (like TiVo) and/or security camera storage. Those applications require low-noise, low-heat, non-stop usage. Unlike a regular computer drive where there are built in mechanism in the drive to continuously monitor the accuracy of data-writes, these kinds of continuous writes require the drives to continue writing even if it encounters a bad sector in the drive...those non-stop video writing can't wait for the drive to attempt multiple times to write the same data (which a regular PC drive would do and if it fails then it skips over the bad sector and attempts to write that same data in another drive sector). But these AV applications need to constantly write the streaming data and if it fails writing to a bad sector, it continues writing the rest of the streaming video data not caring whether the write was successful or not. That is by design. In case of unreadable bad sector during playback, software in DVRs like TiVo is written to skip over the unreadable sector and continue playing back the video with a minor hiccup in the video continuity.

Cons: None.

5 out of 5 eggsWD HDD's Forever!

Pros: It's HUGE and works as advertised!

64 MB Cache & SATA 6 Gbps!

Oh and a Very Quiet HDD!!!!

Cons: Even though it was a great price, It could come down more in price!
...and hopefully it will soon as I need a second 4TB to consolidate several other lesser HDDs.

Other Thoughts: I have over 20 years experience with building, repairing, and maintaining PCs and WD has never let me down. In the event that one failed while under warranty WD has also always come through. I will never run one anything but WD in my personal systems, and will always recommend them to friends, family, and clients!

This was a great price on a huge HDD that I needed for my ever expanding video and music collections.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks fine in ESATA HD Docking Station

Pros: Huge
Fast enough for backups and video
3yr warranty
Works as advertised
Warm but not hot

Cons: Not automatically recognized by Anker 6613 series HD docking station

Other Thoughts: Delivered fast and well-packaged.
My older 2TB Samsung was recognized automatically when I plugged it into the docking station, which is officially rated to use up to 3TB disks. I had to go into Device Manager, mount the volume and give it a drive letter, do a quick format, and everything was fine. I'm using it on an older home-build machine through ESATA, and it's it's as fast as needed for backups and streaming video. 3 year warranty is better than the normal "eco green" WD series, not as expensive or power-hungry as the Black label series.
