1 out of 5 eggsSLOW SLOW SLOW

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: Quiet, easy to use.

Cons: Horribly slow. Max performance was 30 MB/s out of drives capable of doing individually ~75+ MB/s let alone a RAID.

Other Thoughts: Building my own NAS device instead.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Edgar,
We thank you for your feedback on the My Cloud EX4 drive. Although the performance of the individual drives inside of the EX4 enclosure do factor into the overall performance capabilities of the RAID, all data transfers and performance are still processed through the network interface of the enclosure itself, coupled with the RAID volume.
We advise updating your device to the latest firmware version which may provide improved performance and functionality of the drive.

3 out of 5 eggsDecent NAS System

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: - 4 Drive Bays (no restriction on capacities, make/model of drive)
- Easy to use interface
- Easy to setup
- Reliable
- Runs cool and quiet for having 4 desktop size hard drives inside it.
- Runs efficient, even under load. Minimal slow downs during heavy load times.
- 2x USB 3.0 ports on the back make it ideal for monitoring a UPS system and still allowing you to backup flash drives or hard drives very quickly.

The box was very easy to setup. I am an avid user of networking storage enclosures and have to admit, it was a breeze to get it going. The provided instructions are a little weak. There are so many advanced networking features but very little documentation about what the features do or how they could benefit you. I like the fact that it allows you to do redundant networking interfaces and power supplies, but only provides you with one CAT-5E cable and one PSU. It does, however, interface well with my Uninterruptible Power Supply via USB. Gives me real-time alerts on the UPS status and can even turn itself of or put it to sleep if the UPS battery is low to help conserve power for the rest of the devices.

Cons: - Buggy firmware and user interface. I have put calls into WD about certain pop-up windows not showing any content. No one can give me an answer
- Slow to boot
- Frequent firmware updates
- No Google Drive cloud backup capability (other drives have the ability to backup to Google Drive. This one only gives you ElephantDrive and AmazonS3.
- Program to login and manage "Cloud" features is buggy and dodgy at best.
- Price was a little higher, compared to other 4-bay diskless NAS systems.

The user interface bugs are what really baffle me. Every single one of my cons could be written off as little annoyances except this one. Through all the updates in firmware (about 14 in the 4 months its been in service), they still can't fix the blank dialog boxes. I called up WD about the issue and used the Internal Backups dialog box as an example and the tech proceeded to explain I didn't need to make backups because of the RAID type I chose during setup. OKAY???!?!?! I didn't ask about RAID and backing up, I asked about my dialog boxes missing everything except the Cancel and Next buttons. I have pictures of blank dialog boxes and the tech support staff said they weren't relevant. Um, yeah they are if you can't understand what I am telling you is defective. They even wanted me to go as far as restoring the box to factory defaults. I work in a very high volume office environment. We have financials, claims, documents, HR, our whole office runs off of this box. I cannot bring the system down for even a minute. I guess I will have to deal with it until we decide to replace the system, which shouldn't be long with the issues we've had with it.

Other Thoughts: We bought this unit to replace an aging server that we were using as a file repository. Overall, I can't complain, it has served it's purpose. Our company is growing, however, and I am not so sure that this EX4 has the ability to grow with our company. We're looking for a solution that we can natively access our files from in the office and out without needing to download additional software, that will work similar to Google Drive where it has a simple and easy folder that it syncs to the unit, and something that I can network into our office printers so that our staff can print from out of the office. FTP will just not serve our purpose unfortunately. I will most likely be looking for a replacement solution to this to meet my needs as this product has too many bugs and limitations for an office environment. Next time, I will learn to spend a little more time researching the capabilities of the products instead of the hype by the manufacturer.

All in all, I rated it a 3 because it definitely is a feature rich unit that has a lot of potential, but no higher as the bugs this unit has really make a lot of the menus non-functional.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Steven,
We would like to extend our apologies for any inconvenience you might have experienced with the device and provided support, as this is not the intended or expected experience with either.
The concerns you are referring to with the buttons in the Dashboard not being selectable is something that may be browser related. If you have not already done so, we recommend trying a different browser as a test to see if the issue persists. We agree that performing backups of your data on a consistent basis is an important feature of the My Cloud. The My Cloud device is supported with the Amazon and Elephant Drive services you mentioned, and should work seamlessly after validating your account credentials. We would like to work with your further to address your concerns with a positive resolution and investigate the problems you have raised within your review. Please allow us the opportunity to assist you by phone or email below, and when you speak with our staff be sure to reference this Newegg review along with your previous case number so we connect you with the appropriate team member.

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID! SLOW! GARBO!

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: Solid construction.

Cons: Incredibly slow. Installed 4x3TB Enterprise Class drives that performed at the 300MB/s WRITE and 400MB/s READ on a Adaptec 6405 card on RAID 10, on the WD EX4 I got 50MB/s at best in both RAID 5 and RAID 10.

CAT6 GIGABIT Ethernet cable is pointless, probably why WD includes a CAT5E as they know this device is not capable of anything close to those speeds.

This is good for those who want large storage for smaller files with the cloud ability, but beyond that for someone looking for large storage and speed, move on to something else.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there Alexander,
We appreciate your feedback on the My Cloud EX4 device.
For the intended purposes and function of the My Cloud on a Gigabit Ethernet connection, CAT 5e and CAT 6 will properly support the same data transfer rates on any given gigabit network. CAT 6 cabling is only required if you were utilizing 10-gigabit speed interfaces, which the My Cloud does not support; it supports up to Gigabit (10/100/1000) speeds. We have included a link below which has information on how to optimize performance with the My Cloud and connected devices within your network.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

It is important to verify that your device has the latest firmware update installed which may provide improved performance and functionality of the My Cloud.

5 out of 5 eggsWhat's with the bad reviews?

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: I'm only writing this because I have it and don't understand the 1 star reviews. I have this, it works, and so far I've had no issues.

From reading the reviews, one guy may have gotten a bad device, there is a failure rate in all consumer electronics. It happens.

For the other 1 star review it sounds like the guy wants a magical unicorn device. I'd take it as more credible but we measure storage in bytes and the guy is complaining that it takes 20 minutes to transfer 1.5 terabytes. Ok, so... the 1 (one) gigabit network card in this baby is transferring at 10 (ten) gigabits and you are calling it a con? For the other issues there can be other things such as DRM standing in the way. This thing gets firmware updates regularly maybe there was a bug or something.

For WAN access I've had no issues. I hate writing reviews to stick up for a company or device but for me this thing has been a solid performer.

Further calculations for the unicorn idiot if he ever reads this:
1.5 Terabytes over 1000/M = 3 Hours, 45 Minutes and 16 Seconds

If he meant terabits. 1.5 terabits = ~192 Gigabytes.
192 Gigabytes over 1000/M = 0 Hours, 28 Minutes and 09 Seconds

Cons: Some of the software updates take awhile.

Other Thoughts: If you keep your expectations realistic, then this is a good device.
Currently have 4 3TB disks in raid 5.

1 out of 5 eggsmy cloud ex4

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: excellent build

Cons: does not work

Other Thoughts: Bought it at a local store. Could not get the installation working. Try on multiple computer.
Returned it and exchange for EX2. The latter works with no problem.
Was it faulty? I did not get any helpful support from wd at all.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear nicktran111467,
We appreciate your feedback and are sorry to hear about the inconvenience you experienced with the initial setup of the My Cloud EX4.
When setting up the device for the first time we advise trying to access the Dashboard for the initial configuration as the Administrator. The name of the drive and IP address can be found on the LCD screen of the device, and this can be typed into your browser to navigate to the Dashboard.
“How to set up a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive on a network for the first time”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10439
“How to access the Dashboard on a WD My Cloud, WD My Cloud Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10420

If there is not a valid IP or the device is inaccessible, we recommend resetting the device with the reset button on the back.

4 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: The price and the software that comes along with it. I used another brand of Hard Drive and they detected just fine. Western Digital has made this unit capable of running without communicating with their servers. It gives a great deal of freedom, which I love. You just have to be willing to spend the time setting it up. This unit also gives you ssh access(as of this writing). I have used this to determine the load and to kill processes and disable certain services. You could use this access to do a lot of other things. iSCSI is nice as well. Even though this unit does have some performance issues. I have had no trouble streaming video from the device.

Cons: Performance. In the next edition hopefully they will upgrade the guts.

Other Thoughts: I am happy with this unit, and with iSCSI you can do a lot. I have created a few virtual drives to house VM's and will probably try and tie a couple of hosts back to this device. For the price this is an interesting unit. I have looked at setting up FreeNAS. I have also looked at some of the other NAS units. The big problem is trying to tie back to your data and this unit does a lot of the hard work for you in that department.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Worth It

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 Diskless: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0000NBK-NESN

Pros: It's very small and has 4 drive bays.

Cons: I thought this would be good for my small office, but there's too many problems.

1) Moving files to the unit without using iSCSI is insanely slow. (1.5tb = 20 min)
2) Files moved using iSCSI aren't accessible through the cloud.
3) Cloud sharing is moderated through the proprietary WD software or by emailing links through WD,com
4) Cloud access is done via 48-hour, one-time-use keys provided by WD.com
5) Built-in multimedia streaming service can only stream MP3 files.
6) XVID encoded .AVI files come up as "corrupt" when accessed on DLNA devices.

So, with employees not being able to access or share files outside the internal network, and since the file transfer to/from the unit is unacceptably slow, and since I can not give this a Zero Star rating, it earns a 1 by default.

Other Thoughts: The #1 problem is that accessing the unit externally through WD.com is completely unacceptable.

I could have sworn this was supposed to have a printer sharing ability, but since it doesn't and since the documentation doesn't mention it, I'm probably mistaken.

It would have been nice to get rid of the old file server, but I guess I'm stuck with it for a bit longer.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Fumtu,
iSCSI connections use a protocol that creates an image file that must be mounted and authenticated through iSCSI for access to the data. This is actually a method of mounting a target image on a My Cloud network share as a physically connected hard drive on your computer. As the data is managed by iSCSI, it must be accessed via iSCSI.
The included desktop software is not required to access the drive remotely. For remote access to individual files and folders we recommend using the built-in My Cloud remote access via either the provided desktop app, through a web browser, or the phone app. You may also email links to files and folders which allows remote access to individuals for a one-time connection.
The activation code generated through the WD Cloud utility on the user interface of the drive expires after 48 hours if not validated and activated by the remote user. Once the code has been activated on an app or associated with an email, the remote access is granted for that user unless altered by the Admin of the My Cloud.
Please refer to our Learning Center link below for more information.
http://setup.wd2go.com
The My Cloud is DLNA compliant and supports this standard. However, individual file support is dependent on the devices accessing the data via a DLNA media server. Please refer to this link for supported file types and codecs for DLNA streaming with the Twonky Media Server.
http://goo.gl/KLmWLt
http://goo.gl/aHHhin
As a best practice when moving data to the drive for initial transfers from your source computer, you will want to consider using an Ethernet connection to your router. If wirelessly connected, you may not achieve optimal speeds or sustained bandwidth.
Printer sharing is not currently a feature of the My Cloud device. We appreciate the suggestion as we are always taking our customer’s feedback into consideration for adding product features.
For further assistance, please contact us via phone or email below.
