1 out of 5 eggsNice Concept, but Crashes Explorer Win 7 x64

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: Good connectivity, storage, fairly easy to use and administer, etc.

Cons: Very quirky and buggy software. Since I purchased and installed, my PC has ongoing issues on every session that the MyCloud Desktop Software has been run. Rebooting the machine resolves the issues until the software is run again. After searching the internet, this appears to be an ongoing issue and may be related to Win 7 x64. From what I've read, WD does not recognize the issue nor has come across a fix for it.

Also, 2 our of 10 machines this was installed on would not function properly. I got an error message to contact WD Support. After they called and went through the issue, they hung up on me (by accident I believe), and they closed the case.

Other Thoughts: What a waste! It's a great product if it works properly. In theory, I like it but it is just not reliable and the folks at WD have been no help.

4 out of 5 eggsChanged Opinion

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: 1. Plenty of Storage
2. Convenient access from anywhere (phone,, download and install access app wherever I am).
3. Extremely Fast
4. Easy to organize users and file permissions
5. Perfect for media streaming to my PS3, Xbox One, WD Live boxes.

Cons: Can't upgrade RAM or CPU for future proofing

Other Thoughts: I bought the 16TB model. I struggled with the speed issues that I read on other reviews where people called it sluggish, miserably slow ,etc. I was so frustrated that I started researching other server boxes to move my drives to. I opened multiple tickets which none of the advise fixed my lag issues. My "old" hardware was the ASUS Sabertooth P67, Sandy Bridge 3.4ghz, Netgear R8000 Nighthawk x6 and GTX680 (not relevant, but I wanted to say it). Speed stats are 125MB down and 15MB up, so I know my network is fast. I decided to upgrade my hardware for other reasons (obviously not an attempt to speed up my EX4) and all of a sudden my EX4 became AMAZING. I have no idea how the change increased my speeds to the EX4, but it did. Maybe something with compatibility on the other network drivers or something. My old system was a clean install so there was nothing interfering with it like browser hijackers or viruses. With the old system the EX4 CPU was always near max usage and unbearably slow at idle. Now it's just the opposite. The CPU usage is 0% - 5% at idle. Transfer speeds are the same or faster than copying to a USB3.0 flash drive. I went from 10-15 MB/s to 65-75 MB/s. I can finally use the server for the reason I purchased it after owning it for a year. I would be inserted in knowing why the hardware upgrade made such a huge difference. Both systems were Gigabyte Ethernet and have the same speeds when running a test. The only thing I can think of is that there was some sort of compatibility issues with the way the server worked with my other hardware or drivers While I sit here confused, I am now extremely happy with the EX4. I wish WD would look into this and post a list of known hardware/driver conflicts and resolution for this other than buying different PC hardware. Maybe it can be fixed with a firmware upgrade which don't come too often. I'm still waiting for one to fix the known media server issues for storing certain video formats that WD acknowledged on 7/31/2014.

I took an egg off for the lack of firmware updates on known issues. It has been nearly a year since they acknowledged certain video files degrade performance. The main reason I bought this was for media streaming, which a lot of people do, and it's faulty for some popular formats.

4 out of 5 eggsFantastic unit so far!

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: I've had the 16TB EX4 unit for about a month now, running 24/7 in RAID 5 configuration. The cloud features are really solid, and with the ability to add users and manage the content of what the users have access to makes this a great little unit for any small business, or in my case, production studio with other clients swapping files back and forth.

Let me be very clear on this - This is not the fastest NAS, and they don't try to advertise it to be. People who are complaining about the transfer speeds either did not research the product enough, or don't know what they are doing. And the drives, so far, have been great. I am a Western Digital guy myself. Every drive I have gotten from them has been solid. These red drives no different.

When I first opened the unit and connected it, I connected it straight to my main production PC through the Ethernet port to get the fastest transfer speeds possible. I was getting about 40mbps to 55 mbps on average, transferring a few terabytes of large HD video files. It took a few hours, but again, it is not the fastest NAS out there.

After transferring all my main files directly connected to the PC, I then moved the EX4 to the first floor where the router is located. Plugging it in to the router, powering it on, and getting it online was as simple as just that. It automatically finds an IP address, and bam - done.

In the month I have had it, I only had 2 minor issues with it that simple re-boots solved the issue. For the most part, Western Digital tech support via phone was extremely helpful. I had 2 techs that where not the greatest of help, but the other 2 where extremely helpful and seemed to know what they where doing.

I have tested the cloud features in a couple ways. I downloaded the My Cloud app to 3 different Android phones, 2 Android Tablets, and 2 PCs - although when I am on PCs in my own network, I use Winodws Mapped drives in 'My Computer' for the most part for easy drag and drop copy.

When using the NAS on Windows 7 through mapped network features, I am now mainly connected to it from my production PC through Wi-Fi connection. Now, with the Wi-Fi, I am of course not getting the max transfer speeds I was getting when I was connected directly to the PC's Ethernet port, but that is to be expected. My router has a max transfer rate of 300mbps, and on average I get 7 to 10 mbps transfer to the NAS through the wifi. So for average files sizes, it's not to bad for me. I am not hung up on the slower speeds, as I am using this mostly for backup.

The Android apps work very well, and if for some reason they get hung up or don't respond, I simply close the app out completely and restart. I am not sure if that is an app issue or an Android issue, but over all, everything works very well. All my files are accessible from anywhere I have an internet connection.

The NAS has been on 24/7 since I purchased it, and after my last reboot 2 wees ago, I have had 0 issues with it.

Cons: I guess if I have to give it any cons, it would be the transfer speeds, but again, they don't claim that this is build to be the fastest.

Other Thoughts: This is my first NAS, and I have done a lot of work with it without any major issues. Only 2 times earlier in the month I had to reboot it, but that was it. It's been rock solid performance for 24/7 the last 3 weeks. So far, no complaints.

1 out of 5 eggsToo Slow

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: 16TB in RAID-5
looks nice

Cons: 1)Sloth speed..................................... My 8TB of media storage will take weeks.... to transfer to the Ex4.
2) Problematic interface
3) No exFAT external drive support. This limits mac connectivity and transferring movies.
4) Poor documentation. Inadequate descriptions of features or configurations.

Other Thoughts: Avoid.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Professor,
Your feedback on the My Cloud EX4 is appreciated and we regret discovering the concerns you are currently having with your device.
We advise verifying that your EX4 has the latest firmware update installed which may provide improved performance and possibly address any concerns you currently have with the Dashboard configurations page.
“Product update for WD My Cloud EX4”:

When experiencing slower than expected performance with a My Cloud network drive we recommend ensuring you are using a Gigabit router, CAT 5e or CAT 6 cabling for connected devices, and that the computer and drive are connected directly to the same router via Ethernet. One more thing to consider is disabling wireless interfaces on your computers to rule out the wireless connection as a possible bottleneck. Please visit the link below for further information on how to optimize connections and performance with your My Cloud drive on your LAN.

“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”:

Currently the My Cloud device supports the following format options for drives directly attached to the back of the unit via USB.
Linux Ext2, Ext3/Ext4

Although the ExFAT file system is not currently supported with direct attached USB drives at this time, we have provided your suggestions to our product development team as a feature request for further consideration and review.

Your information from this review has been forwarded to our My Cloud Support Team for further assistance with your performance concerns so they can look into this and attempt to resolve them for you directly.

5 out of 5 eggsFinally... Room to grow

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: Lots of room at a good price. I went with 16tb and I am glad I did. My set up is not all that complicated. Moved an iTunes folder over to it and set up a small fanless computer to run iTunes so the Apple TV will work when my main computer is not around... as it travels with me. The app that comes with it works well although not terriably fast. However they could not make it easier to move files when on the road. Log into the app, drag files over, and done. Very nice.

RAID5 is already set up. For me it was as simple giving it a static IP and letting it rip although it is DHCP default for users just wanting to plug it into their cable routers.

Cons: A little tempeture sensitive. I had it on a rack shelf with a fanless PC next to it. Temp warnings all the time. Move it to a better vented shelf all alone and so far so good.

Other Thoughts: This is a home box. Get rid of all those external drive you have laying around. Very solid at a good price.

1 out of 5 eggsTerrible product.

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: Unit looks nice, software is fairly simple to setup and configure. This would be a great product with the exception of a major flow where all data is lost under high loads.

Cons: I own two of these units, a 16TB and an 8TB. In a RAID-5. I've been able to replicate this on each unit twice, leading me to believe the underlying OS is responsible.

If you put this unit under very high load for extended periods of time, the device will become extremely slow, even after turning off IO inducing apps. The website UI at this point will only show a 500 status code error page, preventing any device administration. Upon hard reboot of the device, all data will be lost.

I can understand the slow IO under high load, it's a consumer device. But the fact it's so easy to replicate total array failure is unacceptable. This was reproduced with the currently available firmware while using SMB & NFS shares against an R5 array. Absolutely nothing fancy going on, just a lot of IO. (Transferring 6TB data sets of mostly 5-100k files to the units)

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings Rich,

1 out of 5 eggsStay away!

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: 16 TB of network storage in a Raid 5 configuration for under $1200.

Cons: Device constantly becomes unresponsive and CPU runs at 100% with few clues as to why. Lousy user interface - Advanced configuration options are not accessible short of SSH. Could not delete some folders/files w/o SSH in to the device and working through the CLI. CPU regularly spikes to 100% causing the device to become inaccessible. Plenty of "service-bloat" with few options available to turn off poorly behaved and/or unnecessary services. If you load media files onto this device, be prepared to wait for DAYS for the device to finish indexing the files and creating thumbnails. Hope you weren't planning to use it anytime soon. Oh- Wondering what is going on? GUI is unresponsive. -No clue. Device must be rebooted constantly. I still do not trust it as a safe repository of my critical data.

Other Thoughts: I'd like to see a statement from WD acknowledging the defects of this device and committing to corrections or refunds for all end users. For the record, there is plenty of evidence from other users that the problems I've outlined here are common. Stay away!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello there Longtooth68,

Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience the concerns with your My Cloud EX4 may be currently causing you.
As a troubleshooting step, please try resetting the EX4 to factory defaults, to ensure that what you are currently experiencing is not software/OS related. In some cases, there may be a residual firmware update that did not fully complete, and require a reset of the device to clear this out.
“How to restore a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive to factory default settings “:

On that note, verify you have the latest firmware for your device. The procedure to update your EX4 can be found at the link below.
“Product update for WD My Cloud EX4”:

If these symptoms continue with your EX4, please contact our support team directly via email or phone, so we can work with you to investigate the issue further and try to locate the root cause of these concerns.

4 out of 5 eggsValue, not speed

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX4 16TB: 4-Bay Personal Cloud Storage WDBWWD0160KBK-NESN

Pros: Features. I bought the 16tb locally 3 days ago and am impressed with the features for the money spent. Dual NICs, second power adapter available, RAID choices, can make multiple ISCSI luns, comes with 10 licenses of home backup software (that I am not using BTW). Not fast, but for the money the speed is more than fine. Anything faster with this space and features is way more than I want to spend. I played a bit with the included software and found it easy to setup data backups. It feels solid, and the drives are easy to swap out, no tools needed. It also sees Active Directory user accounts so I was able to carve up space for individual users on my domain.

Cons: It's not fast, but while it won't win races, it does chug along at a fast enough speed to run my domain controller and a SQL/WSUS server. For me, the biggest con isn't speed, it's heat. The fan, while quiet, doesn't do the job as well as I would like (maybe I can get something better in there), so I mounted a 120mm fan to the shelf right in front of the intakes. Not pretty, but the air flow is worth more to me than looks. While the backup software seems ok for data backup, it does not do disaster recovery- at least I don't see a way to boot to a recovery console to restore whole drives, even though the option is there to backup whole drives. And who wants to reinstall Windows when you have a backup of the whole drive. So I am sticking with Acronis. Aomei is a free alternative that also provides a disaster restore boot, if you don't want to spend more for backup software.

Other Thoughts: Home server is Vmware ESXI 5.5 running two 2008r2 servers, so I quickly made 4 ISCSI luns and put the two VMs and two backup locations on them (yes, have other backups on local drives). Carved up the rest for desktop backups (3 desktops, 3 laptops). Turned off the lights via the web interface as it's in the bedroom, and setup folders for AD user accounts. I am pleased that it is quiet (yea I know, that's why it runs hotter than I would like). Now I have enough space to make an entertainment server, my next project. Overall I am pleased with it, but time will tell if it holds up. It's nice to know I can hot swap a bad drive and have it auto rebuild. Will keep an eye on the heat (seems ok with the extra fan in front) but I think I got a good value.
