5 out of 5 eggsWorks great in a Macbook but requires some work

Pros: SSD and large storage in compact package - perfect for a laptop running iTunes. Once the drive was set up the install went smoothly

Cons: Set-up for a Mac is intensive but not hard. Standard HD is a bit slow to start after sleep but that is expected to me when compared to a SSD drive. Requires "Trim" management software in OS X.

Other Thoughts: Takes some significant steps to make this work on my late 2008 Aluminum Macbook as an iTunes server. Installed in a Win7 tower to install software and active drive. Transferred drive to Macbook and used the Mac Drive utility to divide the drive into two partitions - 120GB (SSD size) and 1TB (regular drive). Installed OS X on the SSD and moved the Music folder to the 1TB partition. Also, remember to tweek the OS X settings for a SSD drive and install software to manage drive "Trim"

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Upgrade

Pros: Great form factor size. the ssd side of this is blazing fast. and the hdd side of it is working great now! (see Cons as to why I used that wording).

Cons: when I first started using the hdd side of it for my gaming, I was more than I little frustrated. it would hiccup every 15-20 seconds and act like a network delay. I know its not my network because I wasn't playing anything online. I was close to sending it back, but like a good tech head I started digging a bit online and found out there is a firm ware update. it fixed it perfectly! the fact that I had to do it is the reason I only gave it 4 eggs. and because its my main os drive you can't do a exe file to fix it. you have to boot from a flash drive to fix it. rather time consuming.

Other Thoughts: I had been watching this combo drive for quite some time. and was glad it finally dropped to a reasonable price. glad I bought it! well worth the frustration of the firmware!

2 out of 5 eggsUpdate (Drive freezes)

Pros: So I have had this drive for quite a while now. It is currently in my laptop running Windows 7. In general it works fine but there is a major problem.

Cons: The huge problem is it keeps freezing. I will be using my laptop like I always have been but about once every 3 times my computer is running, it freezes to the point where I need to hold the power button to turn it off.

I have been thinking of going back to my old HDD. In my opinion, it is not worth the current $150.

Other Thoughts: I like the concept and everything but with the last update about 3/4 of a year ago, I do not know if WD is going to keep going with this product.

Manufacturer Response:

4 out of 5 eggsGreat buy for your one drive bay laptop

Pros: Pretty fast SSD
1TB of HDD for storing large files.
2.5 inch form factor
Cool design
Easy install (software side)

Cons: 5400RPM HDD
Slow write speed for an SSD, and read speed is also slower than most.

Other Thoughts: This drive is great for a single drive bay laptop. Although I would prefer (and many people have given this drive a ton of flak for this reason) to have a SSD and HDD separate from each other, that is not possible in my laptop. I got this drive from Newegg (which has always been great to me in the past) for an amazing price which was the equivalent of a separate HDD and SSD. I couldn't refuse it. So far I have no complaints!

1 out of 5 eggsWhew! Just NOT worth it!!

Pros: None

Cons: 1. The spinning drive is disabled and can ONLY be enabled via WD's software. But here's the problem. What if you can't install the software?
You're stuck! Even worse, if you call tech support, they say they'll get back to you in two-four hours. In other words, you have sit at home for 2-4 hours waiting for a return call!

Other Thoughts: If you read the reviews about this drive, there have been lots of failures, and the performance is not very good. But what makes it worse is that if you can't install their software, you're dead!

Don't buy!

1 out of 5 eggsDOA

Pros: Nice concept

Cons: Well the title pretty much says it. Drive was DOA.

Other Thoughts: I have already contacted WD support, still waiting to hear back from them. But at this point all I can really do is return it. Unfortunately I was under time constraints for the build this was going to be part of so I already had to purchase other drives to make up for the loss of this one.

3 out of 5 eggsBad mistake in buying this.

Pros: Excellent combo

Cons: They should of put a sticker on the box saying "If you format the SSD drive it will wipe the HDD" Lost alot of info when I formatted the SSD...Thanks..Never will I buy a Hybrid SSD/HDD drive ever again.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello there Fernando,
The feedback you have provided us on your experience with the Black2 is appreciated.
It is always recommended to keep at minimum two copies of your data at all times, should an unforeseen event occur. Formatting a drive will erase data from the disk and all of its contents, and it is unfortunate to discover the potential loss of your data by this action. We would appreciate the opportunity to assist you with this concern directly, and work towards resolving this particular issue with a positive outcome. Please contact our support staff directly by email or phone below mention your Newegg review as a point of reference, so we can connect you with the proper team member for assistance.

4 out of 5 eggsA wonderful upgrade!

Pros: It arrived well packaged. It was in a package you'd expect to see at a store, wrapped in bubble wrap, in the shipping box. After unboxing, it had instructions written in every language imaginable. Still, it was a bit confusing that only the SSD portion was visible during an install.

It came with a cord for data transfer, however I didn't even bother using it, as I had moved all of my personal data off of the original drive to an external HDD before even purchasing this replacement.

I was happy to see that the hardware fit into a netbook computer. (Toshiba NB-205)

The operating system install took about 1/3 of the time (Win 7), and the updates were equally as quick. I decided to get all of the updating done before playing around at all.

I was a bit confused about the TB drive not showing up in the Disk Manager, after I was finished with the updates, but after referencing the instructions (first time, ever...) I found that I had to use a cardboard 'key' with a USB sticking out of the end of it. It was laughable, really, as the USB cardboard key simply opens a URL to the website. (See Con's)

Performance was a noticeable increase for this 32 bit netbook. Startup times average around 20 seconds, from pushing the button to network connection/ full functionality. My webpages and anti-virus started immediately instead of having a cigarette and a sandwich before using it.

Other Pros: I moved my user's library files to the TB drive, which has left more space on the 128gb SSD. (See Other Thoughts).

Low power consumption by comparison. Before the replacement, I had about 5 hours battery life, and it increased to nearly 7.

The TB size alone makes this a wonderful upgrade to a 4 year old machine, making it perfect for long car rides where you want a large selection of user files, but don't want to risk having an external drive flop around.

Transfer speeds aren't staggering, but they don't dog either. Taking things from the wi-fi networked computers seemed to go faster, but I didn't benchmark the original drive against the replacement.

Cons: The cardboard 'key' just opens a website that you can also find with any search engine. It was confusing that it didn't LOOK like a USB stick, and somewhat pointless that it didn't contain an actual driver, nor did it point to a driver. It pointed to a support page. It could be more simple. In example, put the driver on the USB cardboard key, or better yet, don't require a device driver to use the HDD portion of it.

The price is steep. $200 for this upgrade is equal to the value of the machine. Granted, it has probably extended it's service life from the 250 gb, stock drive, It's a lot to invest for an upgrade like this.

There's a 'chirp' coming from the drive without reason, under idle or working. . I hope this doesn't fail?

Other Thoughts: I put all of my user files on the HDD. I was warned not to simply copy/ paste the entire user directory from C:\ to D:\, and I'm glad I listened to the advice.

4 out of 5 eggsFaster but has annoying "beep"

Pros: Faster with much more capacity

Cons: Little bit of bother installing. Annoying "beep" ever couple of minutes even after updating the firmware.

Other Thoughts: Love the drive. Faster and more space than my old one. Coming from a stock 5400 rpm drive to this "dual" drive was a huge improvement. Wanted the speed of an SSD but the capacity of my old drive without paying a grand for it. This fit the bill nicely. The install was fairly straight forward, being even easier than if I had an unsupported scsi controller. The only issue I have is that every so often there is an annoying "beep" that comes from my laptop now. Just at random times. "beep". Sitting at the airport not actually using it and "beep". Concentrating very intently on something for work (complex pressure calculations) and "beep", ok, lets start over again. I've updated the firmware for the spinup/slowdown issues and thought that might help, but after about 2 minutes, "beep". If there don't come up with a way to get rid of that, this thing is going back. Most annoying, random, unnecessary, uninformative waste I've ever seen in a device. Fix it!!!. It is ticking me off as I write this.

5 out of 5 eggsWD Black² Dual Drive 2.5" 120 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD Kit WD1001X06XDTL

Pros: Getting the best of both worlds with the speed of an SSD for running windows and games (windows 8 boots up to desktop in under 8 seconds) while still having the room to store hundreds of videos and tv shows without really denting the capacity, also no hard drive hum while gaming as the HDD takes a break, which im sure extends its lifespan

Cons: one, the manufacturer recomended program to clone your OS from a previous drive was crud and didnt cut it, however the cloning was fine with Macrium, a third party free one, so doesnt lose an egg

Other Thoughts: as far as i am aware this is a first for a laptop that would normally be restricted to a single drive, being forced to choose HDD or SSD, makes my $350 thin feel like a real gaming rig
