1 out of 5 eggsAlright when it worked

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: High capacity, affordable, looks nice. Customer support patient, but ultimately couldn't help with media format issues.

Cons: Temperamental regarding usable media formats (hard to tell what wouldn't play until you actually tried to play it). Unintuitive interface awkward to use (no remaining space information). Need WD software to access wirelessly. Didn't care for having to use the password every time to access the drive from my PC.

Other Thoughts: Last software update vastly improved file transfer stability, but it bricked (solid white LED) the next time I powered down.
I've usually seen warning signs of impending drive failure, but not with this one. Lost about 3Tb of data that took months to find. Tired of struggling with this product.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there Dennis,
We thank you for taking the time to provide is with your feedback on the My Cloud drive with your review.
Depending on your OS Version, we have provided some links below for Windows or Mac that will assist you in connecting with the drive without the provided software, as the software is not a requirement to work with the drive on your LAN.
“How to create a Public or Private Share on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive “: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10424
“How to create and delete a User account on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, and EX4 Personal Cloud drives”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10423
“Mapping a Personal Cloud drive or WD NAS drive on a Windows PC”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2676
“How to map a WD network drive on a Mac”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2686

To address the concern with the drive not being responsive, we advise performing a physical System Restore of the drive by unplugging power and Ethernet cables from the drive, pressing the reset button and holding it while plugging in the power only, and ensuring the reset button stays pressed for no less than 40 seconds. After about 5 minutes you will then need to connect the Ethernet and try to access the drive with your computer.
“How to restore a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive to factory default settings”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10433

If the concern with accessing the drive persists, please contact our support team by email or phone and reference this Newegg review, and we will work with you directly to resolve this particular issue with a positive outcome.

1 out of 5 eggs1.4MB/sec is a joke

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: No actual errors yet.

Cons: 1.4MB/sec sustained transfer rate is unacceptable. This is on a gigabit network. I've tried using the same cable and port used to another computer with no improvement. I'm running the latest firmware too.

Other Thoughts: You'd be better off by far with a USB3 drive.

Manufacturer Response:

1 out of 5 eggsTwonky media server won't stream MKV movies to Samsung products

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: Couldn't think any

Cons: Bought one of these to replace my Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Home Network Storage System - 2TB, but had to return it because the media server Twonky won't stream MKV movies to my Samsung products like the Seagate would.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Clay,
Thank you for your feedback on the My Cloud drive.
Given the My Cloud is a fully compliant DLNA Media Server that supports streaming .MKV files to other DLNA devices, this is an unexpected result and should be able to be done without issue.

You can reach us below by email or phone, and when you speak with our team be sure to reference this Newegg review.

1 out of 5 eggsDoes not work

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: None. Device did not function as promised.

Cons: Constantly dropped off of network despite many calls and suggestions by WD tech support. Would only be "seen" on the network after a full reboot of device, and then only for a couple of hours.

Other Thoughts: To be fair, WD tech support was courteous and patient, and tried their best to walk me through several suggestions to rectify the problem. Also, after a week of "negotiations," Western Digital agreed to a full refund of the device since I was passed the return time for Newegg.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear Richard,
We appreciate you following up with us in your review of the My Cloud device. It is unfortunate that the device was not able to work within your environment, and we appreciate you working with us to provide you with a positive outcome to your overall experience. If there is anything we can do to further assist you with your WD devices, please contact us via email or phone and reference this Newegg review along with your previous case number, and we will connect you with the appropriate team member.

1 out of 5 eggsDONT BUY IT'S JUNK

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: nothing

Cons: It worked for a bit then death - the reset won't work - absolute junk. I should have paid more attention to all the bad reviews saying that their quality sucks!

Manufacturer Response:

Hello David,
Thank you for your feedback on the My Cloud Network Drive. Although we understand you performed a reset on the device, it is important to try performing a System Restore of the unit if you have not already done so. You will need to unplug both the power and Ethernet cable, then press and hold the reset button while plugging power back into the drive. The reset button will need to be held in for no less than 40 seconds while the drive powers back on before releasing it. After 2 minutes you will then plug the Ethernet cable back into the drive and connect to your router. Please visit the link below for further assistance with this procedure.

3 out of 5 eggsI had high hopes.... just sad

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: looks good. Static IP helped to make sure it won't get lost.
Disabled sleep mode worked.
Port forwarding worked, but way to slow to view images or video remotely
Nice interface
That is it

Cons: The main issue is that is way too slow. Took over 6 hours to transfer 12 GB of picture data. Speed showed 387KB/Second.
Accessing at home or remotely to browse images takes forever to go from one picture to the next. Each picture around 2MB.
Also my windows image viewer freezes when moving from the picture to the next.

Other Thoughts: I still have high hopes and will give another week.
I will try to contact WD on Monday to see if there is something that can be done.
It says I have the latest firmware and software version.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi there Marc,
We appreciate your feedback on the My Cloud device. If for some reason you are not experiencing optimal performance with the My Cloud within the LAN, we recommend connecting your computer and My Cloud both directly to the same router by Ethernet, and disabling your wireless interface. This will remove the possibility of the wireless connection causing a performance bottleneck, and provide you with the best bandwidth available for large data transfers. Please visit the link below for further configuration suggestions on how to optimize performance with your My Cloud device.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

Also, please verify that your My Cloud device is current with the latest firmware as this may also improve functionality and performance of your drive too.
“How to manually or automatically update the firmware on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10440

1 out of 5 eggsUnreliable junk

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: None.

Cons: I bought this to build a media file NAS for a family member, so I need it to be a simple, reliable, APPLIANCE. That's all. Unfortunately this thing doesn't last 5 minutes before crashing while playing a movie. It had ONE JOB. Serve media files over a Windows file share, and it can't even do that. Pathetic.

It drops off of the network randomly, and from searching Google, this is a COMMON problem for this thing, and no real resolution to be found.

I'm truly sorry I wasted my money on this piece of e-waste. Too late for a refund.. Maybe I can salvage the hard drive and put it on my Linux file server. The rest I shall consign to The Devil.

Sad to say, I actually LIKE WD hard drives, but this thing is just sad.

In case it isn't clear, I would NOT recommend this product. It's just not ready for "prime time" for the consumer usage for which it is intended. There is no way I'm going to handle the inevitable calls to fix things when this thing goes on the fritz every five minutes. Forget it.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback on your experience with the My Cloud device.
As a troubleshooting step to possibly remedy the issue with connectivity, we recommend assigning a Static IP to the My Cloud to rule out any possible issues between the router’s DHCP release/renew on the LAN. The link below will have further information on how to configure your device.
“How to configure a WD My Cloud or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive with a Static IP”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11384

Also, it is important that your device is running the latest firmware, which may also provide improvement to your stated concerns. Please visit the link below for the update procedure.
“How to manually or automatically update the firmware on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10440

We are interested in following up with you on the above recommendations so we are able to work with you directly and provide a positive outcome to your overall experience. Please contact us by phone or email below and when you speak with our support team be sure to reference this Newegg review.

5 out of 5 eggsSo far, so good...

This review is from: WD 4TB My Cloud Personal Cloud Storage - Retail

Pros: Quiet, lots of space, easy to set up.

Cons: A bit slower than I expected, but cloud storage is never as fast as local storage.

Other Thoughts: User access and share permissions could be a little easier, but take your time and you will figure it out.
