1 out of 5 eggsMy Cloud EX2 Review

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: As a NAS storage goes, its does a good job. I can create both private and public shares. I like the fact that I can access this storage from anywhere via multiple devices. My wife takes hundreds of photos on both her phone and tablet. I can upload them to the NAS for safe storage, and to save room on her devices. I have thousands of photos, music and videos stored on the NAS in predefined public folders. Its nice to be able to access these anywhere on my mobile devices.

Cons: Unfortunately, I think that the cons out weigh the pros. I've had multiple problems with the device. The original device came DOA and I had to have it replaced. I've had multiple problems with the dashboard. Sometimes it works, other times it does not. Ever since the most recent firmware update, I've only been able to access the dashboard via the Firefox browser. I.E. and Chrome both lock up.

A big issue that I have is the backup feature. I also purchased a WD 2TB Elements External Desktop storage device to backup to. The backup feature will only backup a small number of files. If I try to create a backup that backups more than a couple hundred images, the backup fails. I've opened a ticket with support and was told that the engineers can duplicate my problem, that it may get address at some point in the future, but no ETA. Then the ticket was closed and forgotten about.

I opened a support case about the dashboard hanging when using I.E. and Chrome browsers. The reply was "update the firmware". It was the latest firmware update that caused this issue. Then update the firmware manually because sometimes the firmware doesn't install cleanly when updated automatically.

Other Thoughts: I am very disappointed in WD and this item. During my writing of this review, I kept knocking the overall rating down. I started off with a 3, but finally dropped it down to a 1. My biggest frustration is with support and the lack of knowledge and lack of caring.

Supports initial answer is always "update the firmware", or to do a remote session and verify that you didn't do anything wrong. I'm sorry, but I have more knowledge and experience than all of the tier one level support combined. This last ticket has been sitting in the techs queue for a week. I've uploaded support logs, screen shots and the only comments that I get are to update firmware and an offer of a remote session. When ask to have the case bumped up to a higher level tier support, the case just sits there unanswered.

There are several other viable NAS solutions out there. I don't think that I would recommend this NAS device to anyone. This product needs a lot of improvement before I would recommend it to anyone.

3 out of 5 eggsOk

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: Data backup without needing a separate server computer. On paper looks less complicated than a server.

Cons: I can't find a way to use it as a remote drive. I have to use the clunky WD software.

Other Thoughts: My home sever can be used as a mapped network hard drive. Incredibly simple but takes a bit more work to keep it up to date as it is a fully functioning computer running Windows Server OS and needs it's own anti-virus.

I wouldn't call this an upgrade.

Manufacturer Response:

Hey Matt,
We thank you for your feedback on the My Cloud EX2 drive.
Remote access to the drive does need to be done via the My Cloud Desktop App or Mobile Apps, but when connecting and accessing the drive within the same LAN as the device you would not need to use the Desktop App, but rather map to the drive through Windows or Mac as mention, which will provide you with access to each mapped share without the App.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome Device

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: I am a computer tech and love geeking out. I thought about building a SAN/NAS with a desktop computer but I have three young girls so I don't have time. When I saw this two disk NAS device with cloud access I knew that was what what I needed. It is also a reputable brand that I trust. Since I work in the IT industry data integrity is our job and patching software can be a difficult process. This NAS has simple backup processes and simple firmware patches from WD.

I installed two unmatched 500 GB hard drives I already owned and the device worked flawlessly. Simple drive installation and setup. I choose RAID 1 for data redundancy (default mode).

I installed the Dropbox App and it has worked perfectly.

I installed the WD Smartware software on my laptop to backup my family pictures and it has worked well. it seems like it is a little slow but it doesn't really matter since it rums in the background.

I could not resist upgrading the disk space since I am so impressed with the NAS device! I just purchased two HGST 4TB NAS drives. Can't wait to install and have redundant 4TB of disk space!

Cons: It doesn't clean my house.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat hardware but would like to eventually use it

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: Good construction, easy installation of drives and initial setup.

Cons: I installed my own SATA drives (not WD branded) and attempted to run the setup software. After seeing the instructions telling me to wait until I got a solid status indicator, kept waiting until the drive lights went out and the status indicator became yellow. The unit was not detectable on my network. Don't see any support info on WD's site about this situation.

Other Thoughts: I read that several individuals were able to resolve this issue by either formatting the drives first them attempting connection but, aside from removing the drives and doing this using some other hardware, I don't see how one can do this if the enclosure is not discovered by the setup tool. Scarcity of documentation on the issue is troublesome.

As I've seen in other posts, definitely would be helpful if someone from WD support would chime in here and offer some tips.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Software, Very Easy setup.

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: This Diskless NAS system is one of the best I have ever delt with. I have setup 2 so far, and have not had any issues with the hardware or software. It is extremely easy to setup and configure, and all the cloud access apps and desktop software work great. It built in security, and ability to have multiple users without full admin access in the software.

Cons: no web browser data access. Has to be done from a phone/tablet or Windows/OSX computer.

Other Thoughts: I wish it had a longer eathernet cable in the box only 2 feet, but the power cable is pretty lengthy.

2 out of 5 eggsNot terrible

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: 1. Cheap
2. Small device
3. Easy to install HD's
4. Fairly intuitive GUI
5. Can backup to Cloud using Amzn S3 or ElephantDrive.

Cons: 1. Lackluster network performance
2. Quick setup instructions didn't quite jive with what the drive does during setup.
2. Something is taking up about 300GB of space on the device.....It's 900+ GB with two 1TB RAID1 drives installed and I only have little over 200GB of data on it, but it only shows a little over 500GB free. Tech support didn't respond to my request.
2. Almost non-existent tech support (my last two support requests were never acknowledged)
3. Couldn't get Amzn S3 backup to work right. It would never finish a backup. And since tech support is non-existent, I gave up. I'll figure out something else. Oh, and ElephantDrive is too expensive.

Other Thoughts: It's performing it's primary job of acting as a file server for my home network just fine.
I doubt I'll ever use any of the streaming functions.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Erik,
Thank you for providing us with follow up to your concerns in this review of the My Cloud EX2 device.
If you are experiencing slower than expected performance with your My Cloud, we have provided a link below on ways to optimize and improve the unit’s functionality within your LAN.
“When transferring large files to or from a Personal Cloud drive, performance may be slower than expected”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5736

The My Cloud device will only store data that you place on it manually or if you have an automatic transfer being done by software. Should you be running automatic backups with the provided SmartWare software or Mac’s Time Machine, there is the chance that the data is being moved and stored automatically in one of these shares by default without your action. You can login to the Dashboard and view the individual shares to see how much space is being used for each share and verify where the data is possibly being stored.
“How to access the Dashboard on a WD My Cloud, WD My Cloud Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10420

While we do apologize for the inconvenience you are currently experiencing with your device, we have been able to identify your case in our support system and forwarded the information to our support for further assistance.

5 out of 5 eggsFantastic enclosure

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: NFS, iSCSI targeting, Virtual drives. You name it, it has it. The interface is super easy to work with and is far less clunky then it's predecessor (My Book World Edition II). All around great NAS!

Cons: Relatively few amount of hard drives in the HCL but it has Plenty of WDs and Seagate HDs so i was plenty happy.

Other Thoughts: I wouldn't get WD disks for this enclosure. The NAS itself is great but you can get more space for less with a better track record if you go with HDs other than WD. I personally used the Seagate 3TB HDs (ST3000DM001).

5 out of 5 eggsGreat and easy setup

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 Diskless Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0000NCH-NESN)

Pros: Very easy setup, web interface is very easy to use. Runs nicely and fast.

Cons: None so far

Other Thoughts: The setup is very easy. It is preconfigured with RAID 1, so you can change your configuration to RAID 0 if you desire the space and speed over the redundancy.
