This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: NONE!

Cons: None! More than half of them are bad out of the box! Setup in most cases does not let you get by self check! Most get flashing yellow light. Will not go sold blue as per instructions! Come on WD I expect better of you. Its obvious this was a rush to market product. And not tested as it should have been.

Other Thoughts: Was going to use this for a small business NAS setup. I will be going with something else now. Shame on you WD. Personally I do not have time to mess with this. I RUN a computer business. I have tested this and tried EVERYTHING! Simply don't work as advertised! Setup firmware is problematic.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Michael,
We appreciate your review of our My Cloud EX2 and apologize for the unexpected issues upon arrival. This product has been one of our mainstay expert series NAS drives for almost 2 years now and has a reputation of easy setup and good performance. A flashing yellow LED indicates a network cable or connection error. There may be several factors that can affect performance, such as connection type, interfaces used, network topology, and network hardware speeds. To optimize performance with the My Cloud’s Gigabit interface, it is recommended to use Gigabit supported Ethernet connections with your connected devices in your environment. Please note the discovery/setup software will error if the My Cloud EX2 is not recognized on the network.

If the same condition exists with several drives, the root cause may be other hardware issues and should be investigated. We would appreciate you contact us directly below for further assistance. Please mention this Newegg review so we direct you to a team member to investigate the root cause of your multiple drive issues and provide a positive solution to regain our standing with you.

1 out of 5 eggsYou don't want this

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: There really are none if you know what options you have.

Cons: It claims it requires a dual band router, just what I've got and I access it through Can't do that with My Cloud must use your Email address (Prove who you are) can't use my router for what I purchased it for (ASUS_RT-AC66U-Router).

Can't encrypt it, and I read someone else complaining everything goes to a public access area.

The last cylinder of this drive or any WB Cloud uses it as a virtual drive; If you use TrueCrypt (an old one of course) it will delete that cylinder rendering this useless.

I bought a 3 Gig, this being a 4 gig - 4 gigs of unencrypted public accessible info, NSA says bless you for this purchase. And over head! three new processes that have to start up

I took it back and purchased yet another "Seagate Backup Plus" no over head and I can access it all over the world through

Other Thoughts: NSA says bless you for this purchase. And over head! three new processes that have to start up.

I took it back and purchased yet another "Seagate Backup Plus" no over head and I can access it all over the world through of course encrypted.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello Twitch,
Your feedback is appreciated, and we thank you for taking the time to provide it to us in your review of the My Cloud EX2. The My Cloud is a personal cloud device that allows you to access the device locally as you would any other NAS device, as well as remotely. You can create personal users and grant access to single or multiple shares for each user without any remote access account creation on your LAN through Windows, Mac, or the Desktop App. If you prefer to grant remote access, this can also be done without an online account/email creation by creating a remote access code for that user and inputting it into the My Cloud Desktop App or Mobile Device App, as all security authentications are appropriated by the Admin as well as through our WD2Go remote servers. As the sole Admin of the device you have the control over who does or does not access your device and the subsequent shares of the unit. Shares can be managed by the drive's Administrator in order to provide certain users with access to the shares, or prevent other users from accessing them, depending on the requirements and necessary restrictions of any particular Share. Please visit the link below for information on using the drive locally and/or remotely with the My Cloud Desktop and/or Mobile Apps.
“Installing and using the WD My Cloud Desktop App”:
“How to access files on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2, or EX4 Personal Cloud drive using WD My Cloud Mobile App”:

If you prefer to have the option of encrypting the drives on this NAS you can do that through the Dashboard when configuring the Storage of the device.

5 out of 5 eggsPerfect for me.

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: -Easy setup
-Easy-to-use software
-Nice design (sleek and nice appearance)
-Compatible with multiple OS (I have tested with Android, iOS, Windows 7, and Windows 8)
-Great read speeds
-Good Write speeds
-Great media server
-Comes with 2 2TB WD Red Drives
-Included HDDs come set up in RAID 1
-Has 2 USB 3.0 ports for further expansion
-A lot of online explanations of what to do if you get stuck
-There are several free apps to use on it
-Allows for multiple users with different levels of access
-Very easy to get to and replace hard drives

This device is exactly what I have been looking for. Not only does it do an amazing job keeping a backup of all of the important files for work/school (and allow us to access them anywhere on the cloud), but it is great for allowing us to access our entire media library from anywhere over the cloud. The desktop and the mobile apps seem pretty good, has a built in media player in the mobile app for streaming music and has a pretty simple file navigation system. You can also download any files or music from the cloud to your device if you need to do more than just view or listen to them.

During setup, I did get stuck a time or two, but luckily there were a lot of online tutorials on the WD website for setting everything up. I am also happy that I can setup a group for my wife and I to have access with full access to everything on it, I can set up a group for friends that I want to share files with that only have access to that, and I could even set up another group for our children with access to just the media. The groups and users seem very easy to set up and manage.

There is even a whole range of Apps that you can download and install for free that would add to the functionality of the My Cloud EX2. Just a quick look shows apps for P2P file sharing, multimedia streaming, CMS and web design, forum software, a BitTorrent client, and several other things.

Cons: -Can be complicated to setup
-Backing up from a computer to the My Cloud requires separate software from the WD My Cloud. (WD SmartWare)

During setup, I got stuck several times. First was when I was trying to setup and automatic backup from my computer to the My Cloud device. I couldn’t find anything in the WD My Cloud software… and it turned out to be because it wasn’t there. I ended up looking on the WD website and found that it requires different software to set that up. I needed to download WD SmartWare. Once I had that is was very easy to get going and pretty self-explanatory.

Other Thoughts: I have never had a NAS system with this many features. Which did lead to some slight complications and confusion for me during setup, but they were easily resolved by looking on the WD website, it is very easy to look for solutions if you happen to get stuck. I am very impressed with the number of things I can do with this system.
This is exactly what I have been looking for. It is great for backing up important business files for my wife’s small business, making files available anywhere on our own personal cloud, and can easily store all of our music (and even stream it straight to itunes on computers/phones). The case is even immune to my cat! After inspecting the new device on my desk he decided it was too amazing to even try attacking it. Simply incredible.

4 out of 5 eggsGreat NAS

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: Feature Rich
Supports RAID
Supports, FTP, AFP, NFS, WebDAV, LLTD, SNMP, SSH, and Dynamic DNS.
Media Server
Works well with OSX 10.9.2
Works with TimeMachine
Lots of useful config options
Two USB 3.0 ports
Replaceable drives

Cons: Doesn't play well with all browsers, Firefox being one.

Other Thoughts: So far this has been a great, feature rich NAS drive. Ideally this would be great for a home office or small office environment.

I have had no trouble with Windows 7 or OSX 10.9.2 connecting to the drive or backing up via time machine. The one issue I have is the web interface dose not play nicely with Firefox, some items are unable to be selected. Specifically under settings while in Firefox I was unable to select between General, Network, Media, Utilities, Notifications, and Firmware Update tabs to change settings for the device. This is not an issue under Safari or Internet Explorer.

I really like this product despite the small difficulty I experienced.

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Network Drive

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: Setting up the drive is extremely simple, I was not able to connect via the \\wdmycloud address in the address bar. A simple scan of the network will show the IP address of the drive, which will lead you right to the interface for configuration. (I am wireless for my internet connection, a local switch for all of my network drives on gigabit).

Creating new users as well as assigning them permissions is a simple click through the configuration pages. After adding a new user, you are able to assign them a onetime use code to validate their device. The code will remain active for 48 hours, or until it is redeemed by a device. This process is the same for the desktop as well as mobile devices.

The Mycloud EX2 Supports Raid, this is fantastic if you would like to have a reliable instant backup. The only downfall to this, would be of course, if the devices were to get destroyed from a natural disaster, the files would not be available. WD has thought about this with their easily configurable backup utilities. The USB ports on the back are not for accessing via computer, they are for additional storage devices. If you’d like to make a backup of a drive, you can easily copy it from the device onto the cloud drive. Or you can back up the NAS to a USB device in the same spot. These are what western digital calls ‘save points’. Make sure you are using the software from the drive and not your operating system, this way it will make the operation much FASTER.

In addition to these backups, you can configure the device to automatically download backups from your website on a recurring basis. The options will allow for daily, weekly, or monthly configurations.

Streaming the media is as simple as going into the settings, under media enable the media streaming function, and the device will automatically search for pictures and videos to share. If a device such as a Smart TV is on the network, it should find the media without any troubles.

The best part about this drive, you do not have to worry about a monthly subscription fee.

Cons: Limited by Gigabit connection. Transfer speeds on large, or a lot of small files will become cumbersome and time consuming.

Unlike other cloud platforms, the software does not write to your local drive, then to the web for backup. If you’d like to have this back up your local machine to the cloud drive, simply get some other third party software to do this free.

Other Thoughts: I’m used to the older WD MyBookWorld product. I am not comparing all aspects of this drive to the 1TB MyBookWorld, however I see an obvious increase in reliability, and configurability compared to this product. If you’re using one of the older WD NAS drives, I highly recommend updating to one of the MyCloud devices. The new configuration is very seamless and much easier for the novice to understand.

There was a firmware update available right after opening – easy to install and update the drive from the interface. Took about 3-5 minutes to complete the firmware update and reboot. No manual file selection etc, the process was automated and guided through very easy.

There is a bunch of utilities that will allow you to run a systems diagnostic test, system restore, a disk scan and much more.

I did not play around with the FTP configuration on this device, I have a separate ftp server setup which can’t be brought offline for testing.

After being in operation doing a rather lengthy file transfer from the network, the drives are fairly hot to touch. The enclosure stays reasonably cool, I would not keep it in direct sunlight, and this may cause some additional heating to occur.

2 out of 5 eggsWD My Cloud EX2 NAS device

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 4TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0040JCH-NESN)

Pros: Easy to set up on gigabit ethernet network with Apple Mac (OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, OS X 10.7 Lion), and PC (Windows 7 Home Premium).

Cons: WD setup software incompatible with Mac OS X 10.9.2 (despite what WD states). I did setup a workaround to get the NAS device to work in JBOD mode. BUT this was only possible because I had already set up NAS device on other computers (OS X 10.8 & 10.7). WD support was quick to respond and spent time (via eMail) trying to find fix, but could not ID a solution. Nothing helpful on WD support site or Apple support site.

Other Thoughts: Use caution if you intend to purchase the WD My Cloud EX2 IF you intend to use with a Macintosh AND your only operating system is OS X 10.9.x Mavericks.
