1 out of 5 eggsDon't use WD software

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 8TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0080JCH-NESN)

Pros: Hardware seems solid

Cons: Software is worthless to me. I purchased a 4 TB RAID 1 drive (8 TB total) thinking I could use this to backup photos and videos. Turns out that the backup software will not back up large files - that means all the videos you take with your camera!

I get the error message "Partial backup accomplished. Remaining files will be added later. Click View Files for detials". Under view files is every single movie I've taken with my camera. You can manually copy to this drive as a server but forget having a NAS that will automatically synchronize and update files as you add and change them.

Other Thoughts: Please include a good piece of backup software that works for average users. I've been battling tech support for three weeks only to look on line and find out that this is a well known problem going back since 2012 and you refuse to fix it. If you are going to market and sell drives - do that, but don't sell this as a something like a "cloud" that will synchronize files - because it simply doesn't work.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi rob318,
We appreciate you bringing these concerns with your My Cloud drive and the backup software to our attention with this review.
Given your feedback, it seems there is a potential issue with the Metadata (Database Reference Information) for your backup within the software install, user profile, or actual backup data on the drive that is not properly referencing the current and accurate information for the backups.
Although uninstalling and reinstalling the software will usually repair such as in issue, if it does not then our advanced support team will need to look into this further to clear out the negative reference points within the metadata. Please allow us the opportunity to work with you further on this and address these technical concerns with a positive resolution. You can reach us directly by phone or email below, and when you speak with our staff be sure to reference your previous case number along with this Newegg review so we are able to connect you with an appropriate team member.

1 out of 5 eggsGood idea. Poor implementation.

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 8TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0080JCH-NESN)

Pros: Theoretically a great idea. Back up all your files and have the automatically synchronize and be available anywhere.

Cons: Software just doesn't work. Backups are too slow to be practical even when directly connected to a switch or direct to PC with a static IP assigned. When files are backed up they are only accessible through WD software. Sending this back and going back to my tried and true USB 3.0 portable drive backups. While more labor intensive - it's simple, fast and it works.

Other Thoughts: Hardware is solid. Software is buggy and slow. I'd happily pay $100 extra for something that works like it was promised. I really need something that will do what this system promises to save me time and labor backing up critical documents. This just doesn't work as promised.

Manufacturer Response:

Hi Robert,
Your feedback on the My Cloud EX2 is appreciated and we thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention with this review.
As a troubleshooting step we advise verifying your device is up to date with the current version of firmware, as this may assist in improving your experience.
“How to manually or automatically update the firmware on a WD My Cloud, Mirror, EX2 or WD My Cloud EX4 Personal Cloud drive”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10440

Typically backup programs such as SmartWare and/or Time Machine will create a backup folder that contains the files from your computer and mimic the structure/hierarchy of your Operating System’s data and folders for automatic backups, which should not be altered or accessed to avoid potential backup corruption and cause the automatic feature to fail. If you prefer to access data on the drive locally or remotely we recommend copying and pasting the data to a specific folder on the drive not related to the backup location, the same way you would do with a direct attached USB drive.

So we are able to assist you further with your concerns and work with you to configure the My Cloud drive for your intended purpose please contact our My Cloud Support Team directly via email or phone below and mention your Newegg review with the first agent you speak to.

1 out of 5 eggsAVOID!!!

This review is from: WD My Cloud EX2 8TB Personal Cloud Storage - NAS (WDBVKW0080JCH-NESN)

Pros: No many!!

Cons: Horrible.. Wont Time machine backup (advertises it will, set it up once and wont continue) FTP un supported.. The product has ftp but NO one at the company will assist in trouble shooting. Extremely poor support. I had to each the support person what ftp was??? This is NOT an NAS. It is almost offline or near line strorage at best. AVOID. It is NOT worth the money, It is almost worthless

Other Thoughts: This is the worst of all worlds. It trys to be easy and thus you must dig to find things like ftp. It wont stay connected to time machine. Almost daily I get backup failed to find..
This is the worst IT investment I made for my business.

Manufacturer Response:

Dear John L.,
We appreciate you taking the time to inform us of your experience using the My Cloud drive with this review and apologize for any inconvenience experienced.
The My Cloud line of drives along with our other NAS devices support the FTP feature as a service that can be enabled on the drive. Once the service is enabled on the drive it will be available for use as an FTP target. We are unable to provide support for 3rd party software for use with the FTP service. Support for any software used to connect to the My Cloud using the FTP protocol would be provided by the company that manufactures that software. Please visit the following link for further information on enabling the service and some other FTP configuration information applicable to your drive.

To troubleshoot the Time Machine Backups not completing, we have given you some steps below to try, as some concerns encountered when backing up to a network location may be related to permissions on the Mac system drive or settings of the computer’s OS.

Turn off Time Machine
Navigate to the Time Machine Backup Share and either rename the Sparsebundle file something other than your computer's name or delete the file (Deletion will erase the backup permanently).
Check your computer's name and verify that it does not contain any special characters: http://bit.ly/1rrZRQ7
Run Disk Permissions repair on the internal disk until there are no more errors; this may take multiple attempts: http://bit.ly/1FKSv4T
Reboot your computer and the My Cloud drive.
Start a new Time Machine backup to the My Cloud: http://bit.ly/1pFDU0p

We are happy to follow up with the above recommendations to work further with you and provide a positive resolution to your concerns. The information from your review has been forwarded to our team to contact you directly.
