5 out of 5 eggsso far great!

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: near-enterprise class specs at a much lower price; 3 year warranty

Cons: none so far

Other Thoughts: Installed six of these plus one hot spare as a RAID 10 array in a Dell R510 server, which will function as a small business network file share and also as a DVR for a security camera system. All 7 drives formatted and working w/o issues so far (0% failure rate) in the first 3 months of light use/testing as a file server. I will be spinning up the camera DVR function shortly but don't anticipate any issues there, since that's what they are designed for in the first place. Very happy with this choice so far! (PS: also very happy that Newegg has finally figured out how to ship bare drives - each one was in it's own "airbag" wrapper and they were well-secured within the box.)

5 out of 5 eggsWorks Great in PCs

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Works just fine in a desktop computer.

Cons: 3 year warranty vs 5 year on the Black Caviar WD

Other Thoughts: Accidentally purchased this drive for my home entertainment pc several months back not knowing it was made specifically for security system DVRs but it works great in a desktop computer. In fact, I just purchased a 2nd one of these for my main pc that I keep pretty much running 24/7 already to replace a couple aging 500g and 750g hard drives.

1 out of 5 eggs80% Fail Rate

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Not to many since 80% of the drives failed within 90 days. To bad I can not give it 0 stars...

Cons: Ordered 3 and 2 DOA. After RMA the 2 drives, they also DOA.... Now I need to go through WD for RMA, which means I will remanufactured drive and I still have not been able to use the drives....

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Surveillance Drive

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Use these drives in hand built NVRs running ONSSI, Drives function perfectly and video playback is smooth.

Cons: Have had a couple that were DOA but between Newegg's customer service and Western Digital's Customer service took care of the bad drives with no questions asked

2 out of 5 eggsHigh failure rate

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Cheap bulk storage for a video recording server

Cons: Purchased six of these drives and two have failed within two weeks. Really not impressed.

Drives say 24 x 7 Reliability. Some kind of sick joke.

Other Thoughts: Should've went with Constellations or RE drives.

4 out of 5 eggsNo issues yet.

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -specifically made for 24/7/365 video surveillance data recording
-low noise/temp and power consumption
-sequential read write ~160MB/s is pretty fast for anlow power consumption HD
-32 Camera Compatibility
-no video lag or issues with archived video data
-price is great for a 4TB HD tuned specifically for video surveillance recording

Cons: -3 yr warranty is decent but not as good as the black series (5yr)
-GPT format for windows is necessary
-compatible issues with some DVRs due HD size

Other Thoughts: This is a great HD for a consumer/entry level surveillance system. The only concern I have is reliability issues once the hard drive ages and is constantly being used 24hrs a day.

5 out of 5 eggsReliable HdD

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Reliable hard disk drive, specifically designed for DVR purpose.
Runs fairly cool.

Cons: Price is pretty high. But since this hard disk drive is designed for a special purpose, that is understandable.
Sequential read : 146.2 MB/s and Sequential write: 143.2 MB/s.
Slow speed compared with other desktop HDD. But more than adequate for DVR uses.

Other Thoughts: Not all DVR will support 4TB HDD and if using PC based DVR, have to format as GPT partitions in order to use full 4TB in 1 partition.

1 out of 5 eggsWD WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Hard Drive

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: -Quiet
-Runs Cool
-Large Capacity

Cons: I have purchased 3 of these now. The first seems to be holding up but the second 2 have both had problems now. The first of the second 2 died after initializing it and would never format to gpt. The second is now unmounting itself during writes to the drive.

Other Thoughts: I will not invest any more money into these drives. HGST seem to have better reviews. I don't mind DOA but failing shortly after a month is just ridiculous.

1 out of 5 eggs2 DOA Drives in a Row

This review is from: WD Purple WD40PURX 4TB SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Surveillance Hard Drive Bare Drive

Pros: Very quiet and capable when you get a good one and the others we have used are working 24 x 7 for 4 straight months now

Cons: Just received a new drive from NEB. Before we install any drive, we connect it and run full WD diagnostics to and conclude by writing zeros to the full drive. Then we know it works properly. Two drives, the initial one shipped and the replacement each passed short diagnostics, but failed with over 50 sectors bad to write zeros to the drive. At 50, we stopped the tests. At build time, any platter imperfections are locked out by the firmware and then you receive a drive with no "bad sectors" and all can be written to and erased. Both drives were defective and in some way left the factory bad or damaged in handling even though in bubble plastic cases. Newegg has somehow gotten a bad batch of drives.

Other Thoughts: If you install a drive without thorough testing then don't be surprised later on down the road when you have problems. It is better to catch the problem before install than lose data and have corruptions and machine slow down due to drive problems that you cannot hear with the "old click to the ear" technique.
