3 out of 5 eggsOkay, I guess

Pros: Reasonable cost, drag-and-drop through Windows Explorer, transfer speed over high-speed Ethernet is acceptable, lots of storage space.

Cons: Transfer speed through it's on-board USB is very slow, directory structure is not flexible, no drive backup S/W included ("file or category" only).

Other Thoughts: Tried to set up a "Safepoint" using a WD My Book attached to the device's USB port. After several hours of backing up, during which only a few gigs were copied, it just stopped. Same thing when I tried to create a "Safepoint" to a shared drive. Simply unusable. Installed firmware is v04.04.00-303.

5 out of 5 eggsEconomical network storage

Pros: Installation is a snap...plug it in to a network switch or router, power it up, and you should be able to access it from any Windows computer on your network. Very fast file transfer, I've been getting between 60-80 MBS over the netwoark which is very respectable and gets those multi-GB folders transferred quickly. If you download the software and set up your WD cloud, you'll be able to access your files from anywhere, PC, tablet or android phone (probably from a Mac/iphone too, but that's another story). You can plug in another external USB 2 or 3 drive and also will be able to access those files through the network or cloud.

Cons: I haven't found any real "cons", but it doesn't come with the installation software, if you want to use the software you'll need to get it from the WD website, which is easy to find. You do need to access through the RJ45 network connection rather than the USB port, which is for adding a drive, not accessing the drive in the unit. This is a refurb, so although it looks perfect and new, the warranty is no doubt different than if it was not a refurb.

Other Thoughts: Using the WD software to install the unit is optional, as it works fine just plugging it in to the network, where you can access it through Windows explorer. A much better option for storing movies, photos, music and video that you want to share among your home computers, because you don't have to leave a computer on (as you would with an external USB drive) to access it from anywhere. Works great for movies and TV show storage for the multiple HTPC's I have at home. I've had a similar WD MYBOOKLIVE for a couple of years now, and love it, though the MYCLOUD models are faster and have the external USB connection to add yet another drive. The WD software is OK if you need to access your files remotely, otherwise don't bother installing it, as it may slightly complicate accessing the files in some cases (My Windows 7 home premium machines asked for a username/password to access the files after installing the software, which you only need to enter once (admin, blank) so no big deal. Win7 pro and Win8 & 10 machines don't ask for the login, not sure why, but just something to be aware of if you really don't need the software. For a backup drive, you can just use it with Windows backup or Macrium Reflect etc., or whatever backup software you trust, no need to install anything extra.

4 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Very easy setup, I use it mainly to stream from via Plex, and have had no issues at all.

Backup is a breeze, ties easily into DropBox, synced with iTunes Homesharing without issue.

Cons: None so far, the PC apps are a bit simplistic for my taste. But they are straight forward in my opinion, so that may not be a con for some.

Other Thoughts: Overall, it exceeded my expectations. I should have went with the 4TB.

As far as tranfer rates, I get around 45Mbps (5.5MBps). Which is fine in my case.
