3 out of 5 eggsHome Cloud

Pros: Internet Connectivity
Access Files from Anywhere
Mobile Apps for Phones and Laptops

Cons: Difficult File Management System/OS
Incredibly Slow Upload/Download Times
Must download and install software to access files
Doesn't come with any backup software, just trialware you have to purchase a 'pro' license for it work function

Other Thoughts: For such an expensive piece of equipment, you would think it would come with backup software, which costs only about $20. Being forced to buy the software on top of the hardware is just WD Scalping the customer for every penny they can.

One of my hard-drives have failed multiple times over the months, but has always rebuilt itself and repaired the raid with zero loss of damage. So their internal OS at least works as intended.

Manufacturer Response:

Greetings David,
Your feedback is appreciated. We want you to know that our backup software, SmartWare is a fully functional version. My Cloud Mirror includes licenses up to 3 Windows PC's for the Pro version. The only difference is the Pro version includes Dropbox and non WD drives as a backup source. Please see the links below for more information.

It's recommended to take full advantage of the drive’s capabilities; use a Gigabit router and Gigabit connections via Ethernet 53 or better on all connected devices as well. Note all WIFI connections share the bandwidth available by the router. The following links provided below may help address your performance concerns with suggestions for best practice improvements.

We would appreciate if you reach out to us directly for further assistance. Please contact us by phone or Email below and mention this Newegg review to the support team member as a start point to address these performance and backup concerns so the My Cloud lives up to the expectations we advertise with this product.

5 out of 5 eggs

Pros: Works as advertised. I have it on a gigabyte network so data to and from the device is very quick. I can also access the device from my LG tablet with no problems. 4TB is plenty of room for most. I have been steady moving my extensive movie collection to it and really haven't made a sizeable dent in the storage.
Good bang for the buck ratio.

Cons: We're seeing that it streams to just one person at a time.

Other Thoughts: Dashboard software might have been just a tad bit more user friendly. Overly complicated in some features.
At the end of the day, it works as advertised, haven't had any problems out of it, and the price isn't all that bad.

2 out of 5 eggsGreat potential but....

Pros: This drive does a lot for the price and the speed isn't bad if everything is operating correctly. My laptop for instance will only transfer at about 4 MB/s because that network card isn't very quick.

Most people wouldn't want to spend the money or time to create a network file server and this is a nice poor man's / end user NAS.

Cons: Glitchy is the best word I could use to describe it. I've had the most luck mapping the drive and using Windows File Explorer but that doesn't eliminate all the glitches.

For instance: I right click (In File Explorer) and select New Folder. I type the name in that I want but somehow it is magically "in use' now and I can't rename it. I open the WD interface and navigate to the folder and rename there. Fixed the glitch right? Except....for the case below where I couldn't delete a folder in Windows File Explorer so I tried using the interface and you can read below how that went for me.

I DO NOT Recommend file management using the My Cloud web interface unless you have to. I just learned that the hard way by discovering that in my attempt to delete an unwanted sub folder the web interface instead deleted the entire parent folder. You may be thinking that I accidentally deleted the parent but the interface displays subfolders of the selected parent in the right panel and there is no possible way to select the parent folder from the right pane (where I clicked to delete) because it isn't displayed there.

***IF YOU BUY THIS MAKE SURE YOU TURN ON THE RECYCLE BINS FOR YOUR SHARES.

I have found no file recovery software that will undelete over the network so short of removing the drives and attaching the hardware to a physical computer you are snowed if you delete something and the Recycle Bins are Off.

Another issue that I found with this drive is that if you lose the network connection at all during transfers the drive doesn't handle it well. If you are using the My Cloud interface it will crash. If in Windows file explorer you'll end up with a transfer error and you can skip or cancel as Retry always fails. Not good if you set windows to use it as a backup location and this occurs because your backup will not have completed.

Other Thoughts: WD needs to spend considerable time doing QA and fixing software issues.

If you want this as a media share for your house I give it a thumbs up. After the initial pain of moving files it works as advertised and you won't be managing files often for this kind of use.

I don't recommend this drive for backups or business use unless you get the Pro upgrade from WD that manages backups from the device. Even then, I would stay away from the web file interface unless you like the finding Easter Eggs like I did.

Manufacturer Response:

Hello There Gregory,
We thank you for your feedback on the My Cloud Mirror drive. Remote access to the drive does need to be done via the My Cloud Desktop App or Mobile Apps, but when connecting and accessing the drive within the same LAN as the device you would not need to use the Desktop App, but rather map to the drive through Windows or Mac as mention, which will provide you with access to each mapped share without the App.
“Mapping a Personal Cloud drive or WD NAS drive on a Windows PC”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2676
“How to map a WD network drive on a Mac”: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2686

We recommend maintaining Windows Updates to achieve optimum connectivity with your Network attached storage drive. We also recommend maintaining the firmware of your My Cloud Mirror at the most current version for optimal performance and connection reliability. If you have not already done so, please follow the links below to download for manually updating or follow the instructions on page 128 of the User Manual below for automated updates.

“Current Firmware - 1.05.30”: http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/updates/?family=wdfmycloud_mirror

We would appreciate you contact us directly below, if you have further questions regarding adding and deleting files/folders on your drive from File Explorer or the desktop/mobile apps. Please mention this Newegg review so we direct you to a team member to assist you further.

1 out of 5 eggsNot impressed

Pros: Shipping was good / quick (newegg).
Setup was simple (easy to follow steps)
Packaging was good and the unit arrived w/o any issues.
Device is a good size and is reasonably attractive.
Device has a management page with a reasonable number of management and configuration options as advertised.

Cons: The purpose of using a Mirror Raid NAS unit is to backup personal files and folders. Pictures, music, etc.

I found after very little use (specifically time) the device performance tanks after backing up my files. I have a large number of images, songs, and applications. However the device takes upwards of 2-3 minutes to respond in the Windows Shell (appears to hang, but the LED lights indicate it's really busy). The CPU is pegged at 99% even after days of NOT having accessed it. Logging in / shutting down / rebooting the device can take minutes to complete.

I'm unclear if the unit is defective, is a firmware issue, etc. I've tried disabling streaming and all capabilities I'm not using but it makes no difference. Copying a 20kb file to the device took over 3 mins to complete! I paid too much to have this experience.

2 out of 5 eggsSo far- performance is disturbing

Pros: ease of setup

Cons: so far slow.

Other Thoughts: Main concern for me is some processes that are running on the device which are hogging CPU usage. Despite all my cloud and sharing services turned off (this nas is for data and to work directly off of), there is a wdphotodbmerger process that is consuming 50% of the cpu or more whenever I seem to need to work on things. I have owned a 3tb and 2tb my book live prior and performance allowed me to rename files and save small documents lickety split. At first I thought this was due to the raid mirror setup. But after seeing the processes running and their cpu usage and doing some online research, this is a known issue and a very debilitating one considering performance is tantamount for me.

Let me turn off this service, or make it not run when I have sharing disabled. Supposedly its generating thumbnails for teh wd2go/cloud apps. Which I don't intend to use.

Maybe I am wrong though, maybe its the NAS mirroring causing this slowdown? But its much slower than the my book live I was working off of before and performance was acceptable. I upgraded to this reading that performance was the same but this offered the data protection of raid. WD if you are reading this, please help.
