Do Not Buy
- Pros: Flexibility of storage options
- Cons: Slow, horrible compatibility with FW cards, abismal random access performance (with 4 7200 rpm drives, I was seeing 75IOPs at 50-100ms latency).
Support sucks and is unknowledgable and unwilling to assist.
- Other Thoughts: I wish I would have never bought this product.
The flexibilty is nice, but not for the overhead imposed. Buy an eSATA external enclosure and a RAID card.
Drobo
- Pros: Works as advertised. Nice options to either chain the drives or group them as a single very large share. Excellent opportunity for small businesses to back-up data without breaking the bank. We bought 6 HD's for this and keep 2 at a time in it (1 primary & 1 mirror). We swap out the 2 drives each week by rotating the other 4 drives. Since drives are so cheap, this was an easy choice.
- Cons: Software is a bit cumbersome and I needed a bit of IT help from a buddy. But, once we figured it out, it was easy. However, this learning curve was the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 stars.
- Other Thoughts: We bought a mac-mini for our server and use the Drobo as our back-up for data. Love the set up and the amount of space that the entire system (incl. server) takes is nothing. Also, no heat generated so you don't need a server room with climate controls. Easily the least expensive way to go with a proper server set up and keep in mind that PC users can use the MAC server just fine (incl. Outlook).
Great little device!
- Pros: Simple to set up. Extremely quiet. Performs as advertised. I even tried replacing one of the four drives after I put a considerable amount of data on there and it worked perfectly.
- Cons: Kind of slow. Do not expect high speeds. Use Firewire 800 instead of USB.

Introduction
Data Robotics' FireWire 800 & USB storage array is more than just an external enclosure. This smart array holds up to four hard drives, which can be added at any time. The enclosure supports hard drive sizes of up to 16TB on a single volume, so you'll be forward-compatible as disk sizes increase. You can use combinations of SATA drives of any size to manage your storage needs. Drobo uses the revolutionary BeyondRAID storage technology to protect your data against hard disk crash. When there is more than a single disk in your Drobo, your data is safe and backed up.
Drobo provides a FireWire 800 or USB2.0 interface and an upgraded core processor. It’s a great solution for both primary and backup storage of large media and productivity files such as video, photos, music, audio and other documents. The right side has 4 multi-colored indicator lights letting you know if everything is OK, if you need to add space, or if a drive has failed.
Drobo works with all major operating systems, including Windows, Mac and Linux. Now anyone can implement a secure data protection solution.
