Great little device!
- Pros: Simple to set up. Extremely quiet. Performs as advertised. I even tried replacing one of the four drives after I put a considerable amount of data on there and it worked perfectly.
- Cons: Kind of slow. Do not expect high speeds. Use Firewire 800 instead of USB.
Refreshingly simple, superb packaging
- Pros: Where to start? This thing has a mind of its own! There user interface allows me to grow the device up to 16 TB. If you need more space, just replace your drives one at a time, and it will take care of everything for you autonomously. Works fine on the mac, and on mac server. Leopard and snow leopard both.
Using this with 4 of the samsung ecogreen 1.5 TB drives. Without any issues so far.
- Cons: Using with the firewire 800 interface, the data transfer speeds peek out at about 40 MB / second. Not the greatest speed from a raid-5 device, but not bad either.
The dashpanel update won't complete on leopard server. But, the one that shipped with the Drobo on CD works just fine.
- Other Thoughts: I moved it once to vacuum, and the third drive came loose. It instantly marked the drive as dirty, and exhaustively re-exeamined the RAID. That's cool, and it only took about 4 hours for the entire process. I could still access the data while it was doing this as well. Also, the drobo dashpanel doesn't offer an option for case-sensitive HFS partitions. I can format like that on my own once it's mounted, it's just something to not be caught off-guard by.
Does what it advertises very well
- Pros: This thing works well, VERY well. I had an Eagle dual drive enclosure and it was just getting way too hot, and I was limited, and I had to manage each drive, and there was no redundancy.
I have this connected to a Mac Mini acting as my server via Firewire 800 and it runs very quickly considering the calculations it is doing while transferring.
This is best used in this sort of scenario. One computer. One point of access that manage what goes on the drive.
I did have to call the techs to see why their software was not running in Snow Leopard; and that went very well. Prompt, knowledgeable, knew OSX terminal commands, pointed me to an ftp to download a specific version, etc. All they needed was to know what product I had to help; no real information other than email, and before I even registered the product.
Buy this if you want to stop worrying about redundancy, but also if you don't want to worry about managing drives, RAID setups, etc.
- Cons: I wouldn't consider this a real con... I had to transfer roughly 2.5TB of data. So that took awhile (roughly 20+ hours) and during this period the drives started to get much hotter than I would have liked. BUT my other enclosure ran hot constantly.
There is a con that if you are running Snow Leopard that you will HAVE TO BOOT IN TO 32-bit MODE TO USE THE SOFTWARE. They're working on 64-bit for the next release.
- Other Thoughts: Two 2TB Western Digital
One 1.5TB Seagate One 1TB Western Digital
4.06TB Available while keeping drives protected.

Introduction
Data Robotics' FireWire 800 & USB storage array is more than just an external enclosure. This smart array holds up to four hard drives, which can be added at any time. The enclosure supports hard drive sizes of up to 16TB on a single volume, so you'll be forward-compatible as disk sizes increase. You can use combinations of SATA drives of any size to manage your storage needs. Drobo uses the revolutionary BeyondRAID storage technology to protect your data against hard disk crash. When there is more than a single disk in your Drobo, your data is safe and backed up.
Drobo provides a FireWire 800 or USB2.0 interface and an upgraded core processor. It’s a great solution for both primary and backup storage of large media and productivity files such as video, photos, music, audio and other documents. The right side has 4 multi-colored indicator lights letting you know if everything is OK, if you need to add space, or if a drive has failed.
Drobo works with all major operating systems, including Windows, Mac and Linux. Now anyone can implement a secure data protection solution.
