Built on the exclusive and proven BeyondRAID technology and coupled with new and innovative Automated Data-Aware Tiering, the Drobo B1200i delivers a great choice for small and medium businesses and individual professionals seeking an unprecedented combination of sophisticated data protection and management features, affordable capacity, and ease-of-use. The Drobo B1200i makes "Big Storage in a Small Box" and creates the best storage experience ever.

The Drobo B1200i is optimized for SMB IT to provide reliable, high-performance, and self-optimizing storage for server virtualization, email, and data protection. It integrates seamlessly into your TCP/IP network infrastructure and utilizes the industry-standard iSCSI protocol to provide powerful, yet simple, consolidated storage for your IT environment.

  • newegg BeyondRAID Technology A Drobo B1200i iSCSI array can hold up to 36TB of raw storage and beyond. To add capacity, simply insert a new hard drive or replace your smallest drive with a larger one, even when all drive bays are full. Unlike traditional RAID systems, the BeyondRAID technology in Drobo enables you to leverage different drive capacities, allowing for continuous expansion as larger drives become available. With Drobo, expansion is automatic and instantaneous and access to data is always maintained, all while protecting you from two simultaneous drive failures.
  • newegg Automated Data-Aware Tiering The Drobo B1200i moves beyond the days of manually tuning an array for applications that have different storage requirements. Automated Data-Aware Tiering leverages high-capacity hard disk drives (HDDs) paired with high-performance solid state drives (SSDs) to deliver application-optimized storage that requires no manual tuning.
  • newegg Smart Volumes with Thin Provisioning Create new volumes up to 16TB in seconds and manage them over time with ease. The innovative and timesaving Smart Volume management technology with Thin Provisioning integrated into the Drobo B1200i allows volumes to pull storage from the common pool of disks rather than a specific physical disk allocation. The labor of resizing and migrating volumes is replaced with the simplicity of intelligent engineering.
  • newegg Designed for IT Environments The B1200i is the first Drobo with serviceable modular components. This hardware design provides a removable controller card; dual-redundant, hot-swappable power supplies; and a hot-swappable cooling fan unit. You can source field replaceable units in advance in case of a single hardware component failure, to ensure high uptimes. This delivers the higher level of availability demanded by virtualized IT environments.
  • newegg Optimizing Business Applications Similar to business applications, Drobo is ideal for building your first server virtualization cluster, highly available email server, or scalable backup server. Drobo technology has been certified for VMware vSphere, Citrix XenServer, Symantec Backup Exec, and Veeam Backup environments.
  • newegg About iSCSI SANs With an iSCSI SAN, centralized storage is provided to each server over a high-speed Ethernet network and storage can be allocated or expanded instantaneously. Also, no single server can tie up free space and there are fewer storage devices to maintain.

3 out of 5 eggsNot ready for Hyper-V Cluster

Pros: Drobo's ability to automatically create, manage, and expand a storage array with very little configuration is impressive, as is Drobo's ability to use mixed size drives in a single array.

Cons: Drobo is significantly slower than a standard RAID based array. While the Drobo B1200i is now compatible with Windows Clustering and Hyper-V I would not recommend it for this application as it simply cannot perform fast enough for such a high performance task and will cause all virtual machines in its storage to run notably slow. This caused serious problems in our production environment where server based applications frequently crash or fail to start due to delays in disk I/O.

More importantly, Drobo does not currently support a fully redundant installation. The B1200i has slots for redundant controller and expansion cards, but that feature is not yet supported by the device firmware.

These flaws make the B1200i a poor choice for any High Performance or High Availability application.

Other Thoughts: In addition to the issues above, we have had a problem with this unit where the network interface would just shut down once a month, bringing our production servers down and requiring a reboot of the Drobo to reconnect. Drobo support addressed this with a replacement controller card. The replacement controller card lost network connectivity 2 weeks after installation.

We are now in the process of moving all virtual machines off the Drobo to a competetor's device which is capable of more traditional RAID configurations.

I'm sure Drobo makes a great device for a basic network file share anyone can manage with RAID-like fault tolerance, but it just didn't have the speed or reliability necessary for our application.
