5 out of 5 eggsGreat DropBox replacement that is secure

Pros: Is a complete DropBox replacement. The software and firmware has matured and the mobile apps are much improved. Pay once, and you have a private cloud for the life of the product. In many cases the Transporter line surpasses the efficiency of even dedicated NAS setups.

Cons: -USB 2.0.
When dealing with remote syncing this isn't a problem, as USB 2.0 will saturate most broadband connections. However on the local network this is a huge drawback that slows down the sync process when dealing with large files. If you are just syncing documents and pictures this wont really affect you.

Other Thoughts: When the sync was first released it was problematic and the firmware was missing several features. Fast forward to today, and this is no longer the case. It is clear the company's merger with Drobo is yielding excellent fruit. It's a fantastic cloud replacement that should make anyone wonder why they continue to keep their data on 3rd party servers, and in some cases pay to do so.

5 out of 5 eggsJust Cancelled my Dropbox Account

Pros: Cool looking device.
Very easy to set up and use.
Once installed, works just like Dropbox.
Completely private. No monthly fees.
New camera auto-upload feature for mobile is awesome.

Cons: None that I can think of.

Other Thoughts: I am not sure what product the negative reviewers actually tried, but this thing is awesome. I know they have added a ton of features, so maybe the others had an early version.

The bottom line: If you are a Dropbox user and are either paying a monthly fee or would like to do more without paying every month, you owe it to yourself to try this product. Set up is literally plug in a few cables, create an account, install the software and claim the device (it auto-detects like a Nest thermostat which is a nice touch). After that, you have a Transporter folder in Finder or Explorer that works just like a Dropbox folder. This thing is honestly the best $100 purchase I have made in a while.

2 out of 5 eggsNeeds more features

Pros: 1) Compact design
2) Small footprint
3) Power through the USB port (great feature here)
4) Once files are stored, they are quick to access
5) Sharing with friends over the internet
6) Web portal
7) Syncing with other Transporters over the Web

The pros stop there.

Cons: 1) Cannot access if you do not have internet access
This is a MAJOR drawback to the design and implementation of the product. If you lose internet or connectivity, you lose access to your storage.
**This is the biggest hurdle I see with adopting this product**

2) You need more than the average knowledge of networking and more than minimal knowledge of how an actual NAS works.
There is no link to the drive created for you so you can easily access the Sync on your local network, you ALWAYS have to manage it through their web interface. (See #1) The links provided allow you to copy files and SYNC only, not make remote stores (if you want the files off of your computer).

3) First software out is poor to bad.
They do allow you to manually add files and the "Library" function that is included with the original Transporter is not included with the Sync. You keep copies of what you store on your computer, it never truly leaves your computer. (see #4)

4) No "advanced" configuration when installing to allow you to move your "sync" folders (and it only synchronizes, not stores, at this time). If your main OS drive is an SSD and you copy files to the Sync, it will fill your drive up and slow down your computer drastically.

5) Only USB 2.0 not 3.0. Many of the newer drives you can hook up to the Sync are 3.0 and that creates a significant bottleneck when putting files on the Sync. Slow speeds, while transferring, like 7mb/s should be expected.

Other Thoughts: I pre-ordered the Sync and was delighted to finally get it in.

However, when I found out that it only synchronized what you put on it, I was very distressed.

The Library function that is with the original Transporter is gone and the interface does not tell you that when you choose to NOT synchronize, that they remove all of your data from that folder.

The first software release was a nightmare; the 2.0 version is a lot better, but still needs polishing and made to work with the Sync a lot better.

They did add a Transporter folder for you to see what is stored and you can add files to it, but the lack of customization WHILE installing it is a bit of poor judgement on their part. They have received a lot of feed back from customers (like myself) and I hope they move to improve the experience with the Sync.

It is a good product, but I would recommend not buying it for awhile until it actually matures a bit. A few more months and I expect them to have the client-side of the equation hammered out and working significantly better.

The cons are the biggest reason for the 2 egg rating. Once they get the improvements rolling out, I will re-rate this product in the future and I will most likely improve my rating, then.
