Drobo DDR3A21: The Most Advanced 4-Bay Drobo Ever

general information

The third generation of the Drobo holds true to the unique design and simplicity that has made Drobo the best desktop storage solution for storing and protection all your data. It employs the revolutionary BeyondRAID storage technology that protects data against a hard disk crash, yet is simple enough for anyone to use. As long as you have more than a single disk in Drobo, all data on Drobo is safe no matter which hard disk fails. There’s no need to worry about anything else.

It comes with support for USB 3.0 specification and features a completely new architecture, making it more than 3x faster than the previous generation. More impressive, rebuild times are 4x faster, delivering maximum data availability in the event of a drive failure. With the inclusion of battery backup technology, Drobo provides even more data protection in the face of an unplanned power outage.

Ultimate Investment Protection

Drobo takes upgradability to the next level. Not only can you upgrade capacity with no downtime by adding new drives or replacing smaller drives with larger ones, you can seamlessly upgrade to a new Drobo by simply removing the disk pack from your current system, and moving it to a new Drobo. Upgrading not only gives you an instant performance boost, but also delivers all the other benefits of the new Drobo.

general information

Data Protection Made Simple

Like all Drobo products, the third generation Drobo is built upon the award-winning BeyondRAID technology. BeyondRAID can be configured to protect against one or two simultaneous drive failures with just one click, automatically protecting your data without any user intervention. In addition, you can purchase the capacity that you need now and increase space by adding drives into empty slots, or by swapping smaller drives with larger ones. When you do, the additional capacity is instantly available.

general information

Fast and Flexibility with USB 3.0

With USB 3.0 support, the latest generation of the original Drobo is more than 3x faster than the previous generation. Not only will accessing your data be fast, but rebuild times have improved by 4x in this generation giving you the peace of mind that your data will be fully protected as quickly as possible. USB 3.0 gives the maximum flexibility to be able to plug in to any Windows or Mac easily and start storing or backing up your valuable data within minutes.

general information

Enhanced Time Machine Backup Support

Pairing Time Machine with Drobo improves your data protection by ensuring your data is safe in the event of hard drive failure. Apple’s guidelines recommend allocating twice the capacity of the Mac’s hard drive for Time Machine. Time Machine users know that it will gradually use all available disk space without an easy way to stop this from happening. With Drobo you can easily control the maximum storage space available for Time Machine backups through Drobo Dashboard.

Power Protecting Your Critical Data

Drobo doesn’t just protect you from a drive failure, but also from potential data loss after a power outage. In every Drobo, we include battery backup technology that protects all data in memory or cache. When power spontaneously goes away, Drobo moves any in flight data to onboard flash in your Drobo so it will be protected and moved to your disk drives once power is restored. This ensures your important information is safe and sound. Even better, your battery recharges itself and is designed to last for the life of you Drobo.

general information

Compact Footprint

Drobo DDR3A21 has been designed to provide high capacity without taking up a lot of your valuable desk space. It is compact, because of Drobo’s unique carrier-less drive bay design, allowing drives to be installed very close to each other.

1 out of 5 eggsProduct Improvement Required

Pros: Attractive Design

Cons: Only USB 2 throughput
Not totally compatible with windows 7

Other Thoughts: After calling Drobo, I loaded two 6 terrabyte drives in the Drobo. That went well.

Three items prompt the 1 star review.

1. Windows claims 15.9 TB capacity. It should claim less then 6 TB capacity. Clearly the Drobo firmware doesn't understand the windows interface. This product was released more than a year ago. This should have been fixed long ago.

2. The USB 3.0 specification supports transfer speeds up to 625 MB/s. The Drobo, as configured, supports only 40 MB/s. That is not what I purchased! Other reviewer's have reported drive incompatibility issues. This, again, links to a Drobo firmware or design issue. I see no reason to purchase different drives in the perhaps vain attempt for better throughput.

3. There are many other sour reviews echoing my sentiments.

So rather than waste more time and money on a poorly designed device, I'll simply sell it and move on.

2 out of 5 eggsDisapointed

Pros: Good unit for setting up as a NAS in your home or office for storing and sharing media. Multiple RAID functions. Large drive support.

Cons: Down side, If you have a 1st Generation Drobo. Make sure to have your data backuped to another media. There is an issue with newer Drobo systems not recognizing the RAID from an older unit.

Order this unit for a customer after his 1st gen Drobo crashed. Setup the new unit, installed the dives, but no data. After doing some research found out that the newer units will not see the RAID config of the older ones.

Other Thoughts: Make sure that if you have a 1st gen Drobo to make a backup of your data before setting up the new unit.
