The N4B1 Network Attached Storage (NAS) from LG is the world’s first NAS with integrated Blu-ray Disc rewriter. It crams a host of storage and backup functions into a single unit to facilitate ease of management in small networks such as office and home networks. With its unique Blu-ray Disc rewriter, get the benefits of the huge disc storage of up to 25GB. The unit has four SATA drive bays supporting up to 4TB storage capacity to meet your growing network storage needs. Replace or change hard drives easily with the hot-swappable hard drive bay design.
The NAS comes with a Marvell 88F5281 500MHz processor for maximum performance. It supports multiple RAID 0, 1, 5, 1+0 and JBOD volumes, and an on-board LCD screen on the top gives you timely status information of the NAS. A memory card reader on the front panel supports SD, MMC, MS and xD cards for ultra-versatility.
Once storage is set up, you can expand it by attaching extra drives to the three USB 2.0 ports. Or, you could plug in a printer and share it across the network. An on-board eSATA interface provides data transfer speed of up to 3Gb/s for lightening-fast file transfer with the dedicated PC. With all of these versatile features packed in, this substantial offer is really worth a try.
Pros: It works as a NAS. Fairly fast. Can schedule backups of data on the NAS to the Blu-Ray drive. Decent documentation. Nice well organized web interface. It does FTP and AFP in addition to SMB file sharing. It seems to have some sort of iTunes streaming service although I haven't tried it.
Cons: It won't join my Active Directory domain. LG tech support said they are having the same problem and they would call me when they figured it out. (1 week and still waiting.) AD authentication is one of the reasons I chose this model. Also, I have 2 (new) mirrored drives and one disappeared from the raid on the second day that I had it. No error message or email, I just noticed the volume had only 1 drive and showed "degraded". I removed the drive and put it back in. It was recognized and the array rebuilt-- which took about 10 hours. It has been fine since.
Other Thoughts: This is so new that I can't find any reference to it whatsoever on LG's support and sales sites. No FAQs, no knowledgebase, no product information. The first two people I spoke to on their phone support had never heard of it. The lack of support makes me nervous. I'm considering sending it back for that reason. It comes with "Comnso" backup software to backup workstations to the NAS via SMB or FTP. It is somewhat confusing; but most backup software is in my experience. I'm unsure about the licensing. I can't tell if there are any restrictions on the number of machines I can install it on or anything.

Esata not as advertised!

This user purchased this item from Newegg
Pros: Easy to setup
Cons: I purchased this unit with the assumption that the Esata port would allow my server to see this drive as a local drive. This is NOT the case, the esata port only allows the NAS unit to see other storage devices.
Other Thoughts: The online description is very misleading on the esata capability!
