Apple's Time Capsule is a 1TB hard drive combined with an AirPort Extreme Base Station, to bring you supreme backup and network performance! Though Time Capsule is designed for seamless integration with the Time Machine feature in Leopard OS, your other computers (Mac or PC), AppleTV, Wifi-enabled gaming systems and printer won't be left out; it also supports 802.11a/b/g wireless. The Airport Extreme Base Station is designed with your security in mind, so you can be sure that the only people using your WiFi are the ones you choose to allow.

Once you set up your backup preferences and network connections, each computer you've selected makes an initial, full backup. After that, changed files back up automatically, on the schedule you've chosen. Time Capsule frees you from remembering to connect each computer manually to an external hard drive and back up.

All the computers on your network, whether they run on Windows XP or Vista, Mac OS Tiger or Leopard, will back themselves up while you keep right on with your day. You can choose to allow easy file sharing, or keep each computer's data securely separated. Time Capsule offers you data security, peace of mind and networking speeds that'll leave you gaping!

5 out of 5 eggsGreat Product

Pros: This is an excellent product. It is very easy to use, whether you have a mac or a pc. The drive mounts easily using software that comes with the unit. If you like wires, get a usb drive, or firewire if you have a computer that supports it. If you need a network mountable drive and have a MobileMe subscription, enjoy being able to access your time capsule over the internet through back to my mac (requires a mac to use).

Also, it's made by Apple, meaning, you know it's intuitive, easy to use, and inventive.

Cons: None

4 out of 5 eggsPerforms its (limited) function

Pros: Simple wireless backup of OSX boxes. Excellent 802.11n performance. Quick and easy Apple setup application.

Cons: Inflexible configuration and pathetic archiving function. Proprietary setup application (no web server).

Other Thoughts: Don't buy this if you expect to hack it or do ANYTHING other than use it as a wireless Time Machine target.

2 out of 5 eggsSpotty and unreliable

Pros: The backup solution works very well with apple laptops and desktops.
When it works properly, the wireless is pretty fast.

Cons: The routing function of the Time Capsule leaves much to be desired. It is spotty at best. For all the time that I've been using it, it has had to be reset nearly 3 times a week, every week. The settings leave something to be desired, as well. Many basic routing functions appear to be very well hidden, if not unavailable. Port forwarding appears to be one of these functions.

Other Thoughts: You would be better served by getting a DD-WRT compatible router, or a PFSense computer (if your technical aptitude allows for it) and a NAS (Network Attached Storage) backup solution.

5 out of 5 eggsSimple & reliable backup solution

Pros: I bought this unit to go with my MBP and primarily use it as my backup solution and replace an older 802.11b WAP.

I found it very easy to setup and configure both the time machine backup component as well as creating a new wireless network. A simple run through the setup wizard will get everything up and running quickly.

The time machine backups run flawlessly, although it's wise to connect via ethernet cable for the initial backup. Subsequent backups show no issues wirelessly. With 1TB(Actual usable appx 930GB) to use you can easily use the drive to store data and access via Mac or PC.

I've found the WiFi (802.11n) to be quite fast with both Mac, PC and iPhones. Was even fairly easy to setup enhanced wireless security, such as WPA/WPA2 and MAC filtering.

Cons: Probably the one thing I would like to see is at least one or two additional RJ-45 ethernet ports. There are only three gigabit ethernet ports, with one uplink to your existing DSL/cable modem. This would only be an issue if you have more than three wired devices you want to be able to transfer data between at the higher gigabit speeds.

Other Thoughts: A really great backup/wi-fi/wired device that works quite well. Well worth the price, for the ease of use and convienence.

5 out of 5 eggsAnother Amazing Apple Product

Pros: The best all-in-one on the market,so if your looking for a back-up and wireless N router this is perfect. The set up was a breeze on my 24" iMac and it looks like any other Apple product sitting on my desk "1st Class"

Cons: The price of course but you get what you pay for with Apple products.

5 out of 5 eggsWorks with PCs and Mac OSX Tiger

Pros: Previous comment is inaccurate. This device will allow PC (Windows XP, Vista, etc) users to mount it as a drive on their network. It also servers as a router and can have printers or additional storage added to it via USB hub.

Cons: Couldn't used one more ethernet port, but 802.11n is pretty fast. It's just not gigabit ethernet fast if you need a 4th wired PC hooked up to it.

Other Thoughts: Overall, it's a great solution for an all-in-one router/backup device.
