For the price?... Look elsewhere
- Pros: *Unit is small.
*No dedicated PC needed. *Plugin Framework is a plus if you are a developer looking to write apps for it. *Supports RAID 5, though it's software based RAID on an onboard chip (not a pro, but not a huge con either) *Graphical User Interface (not a very intuitive one, but still has ease of administration) *Mac, *nix, Windows compatible. Good to have all 3 filesharing options available. *NAS to NAS replication (awesome if you want to replicate your data off site, or just have a mirror backup) *Data snapshotting (ability to roll back a volume to a point in time) *one touch backup - havent used it, but has potential for the "end user" to back up what they need when they need to without alot of hassle.
- Cons: *Technical support is 8am-5pm pacific time. Unacceptable for a home use appliance. People who have trouble with this will experience MAJOR lag in getting someone to help them out.
*Linux based appliance... but no linux command line shell. This is very problematic in troubleshooting low level issues. *Rebuild time on RAID 5 array with 3x 1TB drives is attrotious. 13.5 hours to rebuild my array when a power glitch happened. For this amount of rebuild time, you might consider using a dedicated machine with a hardware based array. Same price as the $350 price tag for this unit when you include a good controller card and enclosure. *Online capacity expansion - I havent tried this myself. However from all of the forums i've read, none of them mention how speedy it is. It's slow. 3 days for 60% of a 3x750gig to 4x750gig expansion. *Power glitch caused my unit to drop all of its file sharing and display a message indicating that the filesystem had errors.
- Other Thoughts: I CANNOT stress enough how important a technical support line is for an appliance such as this. The inability to get help on the innerworkings of the NAS device is a complete dealbreaker, even for someone with as much experience as myself.
If you want a quick and dirty file sharing device that doesnt use a dedicated PC, then this is your unit. Do NOT rely on this unit to keep your data safe. Use the internal snapshotting, backup, and NAS replication features to make sure you dont lose precious data.
DLNA plugin does NOT work, though it has been promised to be updated 6 months ago.
My recommendation is to research other products of similar build. I almost guarantee that they will provide better reliability and support than this unit has. It's a shame too because of all that the Promise brand has done for the storage industry.
Junk
- Pros: It does not spontaneously combust
- Cons: Cons: If you want to use this device to store and playback audio be careful. The DLNA plugin does not work correctly with .wma files and the xbox 360.
Summary: I have a huge collection of .wma files and the only reason I purchased the device is to stream music throughout the house using multiple xbox 360's. Support for the device is horrible, I spent at least an hour with tech support just describing the problem. They promised to call me back with my trouble ticket number, but never did. The NS4300N is slow, loud and does not work as described.
- Other Thoughts: This thing is loud, like a xbox 360 loud and runs hot.
Happy owner
- Pros: *Reliable storage
*Compact size *Can access it from anywhere on my LAN, either my desktop or Laptop *Handles requests from multiple PCs simultaneously *Supports DLNA uPNP, other brands do not (this point was a buying decision factor)
- Cons: * A bit noisy
* Only scales up to 4 drives
- Other Thoughts: The network mapped drive sometimes gets lost after I re-boot my PC, even when using a static IP for the NS4300
