HP SATA drives are designed for the reliability and mass storage demanded by today's entry server and external storage environments. The SATA portfolio is categorized into two categories: Entry (ETY) and Midline (MDL) drives. HP SATA Entry drives are the lowest unit-cost solution for entry-level servers. HP SATA Midline drives are designed with economical reliability and performance for external storage, backups and archival applications. These high capacity drives provide the lowest $/GB to our customers. Both Entry and Midline SATA drives provide the best price advantage for non-mission critical applications with low workloads of 40% or less. HP SATA drives are available small form factor (3.5-inch) and large form factor (2.5-inch) and ship with a standard one year warranty.

3 out of 5 eggsNeccesary evil

Pros: Warranty. Support. Hot swappable.

Cons: Overpriced for the size you get.

Other Thoughts: This is not a consumer drive. This is an HP server drive, designed for a very specific set of servers and storage systems.
Is it over priced for 500GB? Yes.
Is it necessary to have the HP branded drives for warranty and support, and guaranteed reliability? Yes.

Complaining that you can get a bigger driver for less is silly. This is not a desktop drive. It's an HP branded drive for their server equipment. Nothing you can do about it.

5 out of 5 eggsIts a server drive

Pros: Its hot swappable in a RAID system most likely a server so you can swap out a drive with out dismounting or shunting down the system to connect the power the next time you have something to say make sure you know of what you speak of.

Cons: If you are looking for a got hot swappable drive with over 1000000 hours of Mean Time Between Failures this is your dive if you are going to put it in the family PC look else ware and the next time you say you know a lot about computers please think twice.

Other Thoughts: Ignorance is bliss stupidity is permanent.

1 out of 5 eggsWhat the.... ?

Pros: It's a hard drive. It probably does a decent job at holding data.

Cons: Why would ANYONE pay over $300 for a 500GB hard drive these days? Can HP really justify charging a $250 premium for this drive just because it's mounted in a fancy drive caddy?

You can buy a half dozen 500GB sata drives of the same RPM and the same amount of cache for this price...

Other Thoughts: Maybe I'm missing something here, but this appears to just be a bog-standard 500 gig drive which is mounted in a drive caddy. Definitely not worth the six-fold premium they're charging for it...
