That you can kill a kodiak bear with if need be and have it still work? If you answered "Yes" to all three questions, this is what you are looking for. Since a lot of my work is done in Afghanistan, I searched far and wide for a storage solution that I could carry where I needed without worrying about it breaking easily. I tried the LaCie Rugged Triple, but the craftsmanship felt shoddy, it wasn't the most aesthetically pleasing, and it randomly died on me... while it had been in use on a desk for two days. I cannot begin to count the manhours wasted because the last backup for it had been done a week earlier. After many more hours of searching, I stopped at the ioSafe Rugged Portable 1TB (almost went with the SSD version). The real "wow" moment came when a co-worker was carrying it on top of a laptop with it plugged in and it fell. Approximately five feet. While it was powered up and spinning. My heart skipped a beat, but he didn't see me, picked it up, plugged it back in, and it started right up without any problems. My jaw dropped, and months later, it's still working without issue. For a 1TB HDD, was it expensive? Yes. For a 1TB HDD that's going to survive being dunked into jet fuel for an hour (MIL-STD-810G Method 504), being dropped from 10 feet (MIL-STD-810G Method 516.5), and being submerged in water for three days (IP68), was it expensive? No, it's definitely a bargain. Cons: A minor quibble, but the USB connection is non-standard. The cable itself isn't rugged, so if it breaks, good luck finding a replacement. Other Thoughts: Comes with Genie Timeline backup software and TrueCrypt. Two more reasons to throw down good money on a good product. Did you find this review helpful?
