1 out of 5 eggsSECURITY WARNING!!!! Published ALL my files on the web

Pros: Sure it had some glitches which I figured out how to work around but it worked very well overall. Easy access through web and aps. Easy transfer of files. All good except for the massive security issue.

Cons: One day I get a call from some guy that ALL of my personal and highly confidential records store on my pogoplug had been linked to a google search and were accessible to the world. I contacted pogoplug who never could say why other than I must have created a public link...of course I didn't do that.

Other Thoughts: I emailed the President of the company multiple times and got zero reply. I have to assume they know about this and simply do not care. DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. IT IS NOT SAFE.

3 out of 5 eggsFollow up

Pros: Cheap , fast for movies and file serving , plus music.
Great cost effective back up option.

Cons: Just recently (past 2 weeks) I CONSTANTLY have all my hard drives disappear. The only remedy is to powercycle the Pogoplug (unplug re-plug the power cable). Then my drives reappear. This happens EVERYDAY , sometimes twice a day.

Other Thoughts: POGO-B01 is what I have , had it for 2 almost 3 years.
Loved it. Still using it , but the disappearing drives DRIVE me crazy. I have a case open with their support specialists and am hopeful (as they have GREAT customer support) , but I don't know.
I may be forced to switch to something else.

5 out of 5 eggsRuns Arch Linux

Pros: Great little low power device to run Arch Linux with. I'm using my (now small collection of them) for home automation (X10 with Heyu), media serving, samba, web services (Wordpress). Amazing potential for such an inexpensive product. And it's pink!

Cons: none so far. We'll see how it holds up over time.

Other Thoughts: I've ordered a variety of these from other vendors as well and all (despite the box labeling) were E02 models which all have the higher memory footprint of 256mb.

5 out of 5 eggsAwesome for Arch Linux

Pros: Great little device for rooting and running arch linux and a variety of services. I have a couple and they are running samba, airprint, media serving and Heyu X10 control. For ~20 bucks and only 5 watts of power they're great.

Cons: None really to speak of. It appears that there are some different models. The ones with 256mb of RAM work best and have a compatible (supported) processor for Arch Linux. There doesn't seem to be a way to know for sure which model you will actually get. E02 is the best and its' the only one I've received after many purchases (4 so far). The box may show a different model number than is on the unit. All the units I've received have been E02.

Other Thoughts: I haven't run this for the intended purpose so I can't yet weigh in on that. I have a friend who is using it out of the box and says it works like a champ.

4 out of 5 eggsQuiet Device - Fun Too!

Pros: Incredibly low price compared to other devices sold with similar or same internal technology.

I have successfully loaded and booted (on separate USB sticks) Debian and Arch Linux on this device. It takes some effort but can be a rewarding and educational experience. It only requires a 1G or 2G stick; I use a 8G stick because it was available.

Backing up the USB stick to another stick is as simple as powering down the POGO, moving the stick to a Linux PC, and using the "dd" command to make an exact compy onto another stick. Using "matching" USB sticks is highly advised.

Cons: In "POGO mode" it will call home. Recent POGO firmware updates are known to interfere with efforts to use this as a "non-PogoPlug" device.

Search the Internet for instructions on how to access via Telnet & SSH without registering at PogoPlug. Telnet and SSH may already be enabled on the device you receive, but YMMV.

The packaging is rather luxurious for such an inexpensive device, but does a fine job at cushioning the POGO during shipping.

Other Thoughts: I received a POGO-E02 device. Carefully examine the sticker on the bottom to see which model you have. My device looks brand new.

I am planning to use my device at home as a simple and quiet static web, DNS, DHCP, and SAMBA NMBd server. This device will save me electricity and cooling costs compared to a standard PC.

Onboard Marvell Ethernet chip supports jumbo frames, up to 9216 bytes.

Onboard Marvell processor can "run warm" so make sure the case has adequate ventilation.

There are no internal connectors inside the case for the typical user.

Onboard power supply (looks like +5V DC to the board) is loosely mounted inside case; the closed case keeps that board in place.

1 out of 5 eggsNot Advertised Item

Pros: Cheap Cloud Storage
Up-gradable via external USB storage

Cons: Not as advertised.

This was advertised as being the POGO-B01, with 1 internal SATA drive bay, and when I got it, that's what the box said too. But when I opened it up, I discovered that not-only was it too small for an internal drive, but that the drive... strike that, device, was in fact the POGO-E01!

Other Thoughts: I did not take the opportunity to test PoGo's version of Cloud Storage, but it sounds interesting.

I was disappointed because I had understood these to be, basically empty enclosures, and I'd found instructions on how to install Linux on them, and had intended to just build 2 small NASs.

NewEgg was very good about taking the it back with no Restocking Fee, and paid for the shipping also.

5 out of 5 eggsNice Solid-State File Server!

Pros: It's pink! Low heat, low power, always on, dependable, no worries. I can uuhm, "modifiy" and it still works via pogoplug.com as a "personal cloud" from anywhere in the world! (did I mention it is hackable via SSH?)

Cons: uhmmm, it's pink ?!!

Other Thoughts: Wanted a no-B.S. solid-state file server with gigabit capability for my home network. This translates to LOW power consumption, LOW heat, with NO moving parts! Grabbed a Pogoplug Classic for 29 clams and paired with a PNY SSD, also on the cheap. Works fast and flawless. Been running for like 2 months. Very dependable thus far. Had to mod the Pogo's Arch Linux via SSH on port 23 on the Pogo to work as a MS Windows share, but it's all good..... Working on adding remote VPN support, also a slight <cough> "modification". :D

1 out of 5 eggsNot as advertised

Pros: It is a network capable USB hub for a decent price, which is pretty cool....

Cons: ... But that's not what i wanted. The description says that this is a NAS with one SATA hard drive bay. That' what I thought I was getting. But that is not at all what this device is. There is no bay for a hard drive, nor is there any SATA ports. Very disappointing, going to return it for a REAL NAS.

Other Thoughts: Am I am idiot or something? Or did I get a different version of this thing than what the other reviewers got? Everyone seems very satisfied with theirs.

4 out of 5 eggsActually it is an E02 - SINGLE CORE

Pros: - Prompt shipment by the Eggsters and a fair (but not great) price.

- Has more memory than the dual core B01 model.

- With Archlinux you have a Linux box with GbE and 4 USB ports for next to nothing.

Cons: - The box says B01 but the unit is actually a POGO-E02 which is a single-core, not dual core, and has no SATA port.

- Its pink (you can find black ones out there for less).

- I burn these over to Archlinux bootloader on first bootup so I have no idea if they work as sharing devices as they are originally sold.

- WiFi dongle support is not great with the Linux distros out there (not really a fault of the popplug). I've heard the RTs will work but I haven't found one yet that does.

Other Thoughts: Use your favorite search to look for 'pogoplug B01 linux' and you will find that the B01 (Archlinux calls it a v3) is supposed to be a dual core ARM with an internal SATA connector. This unit is actually an E02 (v2) which is a single core ARM and has no on-board SATA connector. I recently bought another one (in black) from a different retailer and it was supposed to be a P21. The box said P21 but it was actually an E02 also. This is IMPORTANT if you are converting these to Linux as the process is completely different for the two architectures. I don't think the dealers are pulling a bait and switch - Cloud Engines is just cagey with specs and model numbers and does nothing but confuse people.

Regardless, they work great (and silent) if you want to build your own Linux NAS, rtorrent box or web server. For anyone even fleetingly comfortable with the *nix command line, you will find packages to do just about anything you want... including making this into a much more powerful file sharing device than when it left the factory.
