5 out of 5 eggsIs it worth it?

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Everything

Cons: Price

Other Thoughts: This is my first mechanical keyboard since the 90s. I was using a $8 keyboard before I came across this puppy online. I kept saying, "no, this keyboard is just a gimmick and the trend will fade." Then my friend bought one and let me test it out. I can tell you there is no way I can use a cheap keyboard again. If you're on the fence, just do it!

4 out of 5 eggsGreat Feel, No Frills

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Exactly what you'd expect with a sleek matte black finish and clean typing feel.
All around well made and minimalist

Cons: Slightly raised lettering takes time to get used to (you can always feel the off-center letters on your fingertips)
Right windows key replaces right-mouseclick key, next to right alt and fn buttons.
PS2 port required for N-Key Rollover
Minimal instruction manual

Other Thoughts: Great keyboard, would recommend to anyone looking for a sturdy keyboard with a polished feel.

5 out of 5 eggsLove it.

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Feels good. A longer throw than disposable boards, but a real solid response. I get what I type.

Cons: BOING BOING BOING BOING

Every time I release a key the metal plate goes BOING.

I'm just waiting for a couple of weeks to insure nothing is defective then I'm going to open this sucker up and stuff some foam against the metal plate to damping the resonance like a kick drum.

Other Thoughts: This board is great. I'm not paying more money for a useless light show. No clutter of useless keys. Nice and clean and a joy to use.

I will never go back to disposable boards.

BOING BOING!!

3 out of 5 eggsDecent Mechanical Keyboard

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Solid Construction Feel

Cherry MX Brown Keys

Laser Etched Key Caps

Nice and heavy

Rubber feet all around

Cons: Rough sounding key stroke

Loud keys when they bottom out

Braided cord is very stiff

N-Key Rollover only via PS2 connection, not USB (as advertised)

NUM Lock, CAP Lock, and Scroll LEDs are a bit cheap [or nostalgic] looking and the silk screened lettering on the frame is very light, meaning it's hard to read the word above the LED.

Other Thoughts: I just received this keyboard and this is my "DAY 1 Evaluation". I plan to update this review after 1 month of use or create a new review.

First I'd like to say that this is my first mechanical keyboard in about 15 years.

I gave this review 3 eggs for the following reasons below, and I'm not saying this is a bad keyboard, Just you cannot compare a review of say an un-managed network switch which you should either give it 0 eggs if it doesn't work or 5 eggs if it works. For a keyboard there are many factors to evaluate. Also, I'm not a gamer so I cannot review how well this keyboard would work in that capacity.

On the positive:
The keyboard feel solid, it has what is touted as high quality keys, the key caps are laser etched meaning the letters will not wear off, and it has rubber feet even on the legs in the back so it stays put.

The feel of the key pressure is much lighter than my rubber dome keyboards so it's a nice feeling but it will take a little getting use to. If someone wants a key with similar pressure of a rubber dome key, don't get the MX Browns.

The Negative Side:

Keys sound a bit rough when pressing them down. What I mean is when the key is sliding down, the friction of the plastic pieces sound rough. Maybe it's my ears.

The keys make a loud noise when they hit the bottom of the key stroke during normal typing. I've read others have purchased o-rings to cushion the keys at the bottom of the stroke. I may give that an attempt but only after a fair 1 month of use to see if I adjust my typing style to pressing less hard which would solve this problem for me.

The so called "braided cord" appears to be nothing more than a normal plastic USB cord with a plastic fine mesh braid shrunk down tightly over it. Don't get me wrong, it looks and feels nice however functionally it makes the cable very stiff. I was under the impression it was a loose fitting braid around a nice flexible wire which is not the case. I see no added value to this cord. If I were mobile with this keyboard, I'd purchase a replacement USB A to USB A cord that was more flexible.

Summary:
Overall I'm liking this keyboard but it will take a little getting use to. Is this keyboard worth what I paid for it, the jury is still out. This keyboard is missing a lot of features I'd like to have but the price point for them in a mechanical keyboard was just too steep. Features I'd like to have had are - Discrete media controls (not using the function key), dim white back light (this keyboard has no back lighting), Calculator button, a power off/sleep button, ability to program a function into some of the keys, a power light indicator. I hope to report in 1 month that this is a 5 egg keyboard, even for the price paid.

1 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard, Horrible Customer Service

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Keyboard is a pleasure to type on

Cons: Cooler Master's customer service is abysmal. My keyboard shipped without a keypuller and extra keys. I contacted CM customer service and was issued a ticket for replacement parts, I kept being told that the US shipping warehouse was backlogged and I would receive my parts shortly. CM ended up closing my ticket and canceling my part order as soon as I was no longer able to return the keyboard to NewEgg.

Potential buyers should keep this in mind when deciding on which mechanical keyboard to purchase.

Manufacturer Response:

Good Morning Bohui,

I apologize for the inconvenience as we have been experiencing delays due to the labor strikes in the West Coast in late 2014 as it finally resolved this year. Let us know what your Parts Request number is. Rest assured we have been working diligently in receiving our products and distributing them to our partners and retailers as they start to trickle in.

Support Tickets get automatically closed if you do not respond in a reasonable amount of time. Now with that said you can always reply back to a Closed Support Ticket, in fact we urge you to so we can continue on the same topic if you have further questions. Keep in mind if you have an open RMA it will not be affected if you Support Ticket was closed.

Regards,

4 out of 5 eggsGood quality mechanical keyboard

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: -Mechanical (You know this, but if you're coming from a non-mechanical keyboard, it feels wonderful)
-Not terribly loud, and can be nearly completely silent if you take your time (if you're trying to be sneaky)
-Simple but functional build. No gimmicks like per-key lights (though an overall backlight wouldnt be missed) It's basic and refined.
-has media keys and a windows key lock for when you're in games.
-comes with wasd caps and replacements for the windows(super) key cap
-With the included PS/2 adaptor you can have all keys pressed at once and they'll all register. Even over USB it does better than cheap keyboard with I think 6 keys registered at once.
-Uses a very nice braided cable which feel rugged, if a bit stiff at first.
-Comes with a tool for easily swapping off key caps.

Cons: -Labels on some of the keys seems a bit hastily done. Text isn't perfectly flat, has a bit of a texture to it that isn't perfect, but completely not noticeable in use.
-I like the Quickfire logo replacement Windows key cap, but they only give you one. I think they expect you to use the Cooler Master logo on the other one, but I don't like that logo at all. Wish it came with two of the fire logos.
-Font on key labels is a bit too "futurey" for me. But entirely preference.
-Braided cable is a little stiff, but I'm sure it'll wear in.
-Media keys being combined with Function keys means you have to press two keys to do any of those functions. But this comes with the benefit of keeping the design slim with no non-standard button placements.
-The cord is a male to male USB cord, which isn't very common and thus may be annoying to replace if lost. I would have preferred a USB mini cord, but this is probably more rugged.

Other Thoughts: I'm very happy with this keyboard versus the other options in the same cost range. Sure there are better keyboards, but I think this is the best you'll find at the cost. They did a great job keeping it basic but refined, while still having options. The removable cord is a good feature if you travel with your keyboard. The media keys are a bonus. The replacement caps give you a good amount of choice, and the tool they included was a nice touch. I'm happy.

5 out of 5 eggsthe best keyboard I've ever owned

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: I purchased this keyboard in October 2013, 16 months ago and have had zero problems using it for 8-12 hours daily. The construction is STURDY (it doesn't flex at all) and they keyboard has more weight to it than was expected. It doesn't slide around at all thanks to the large rubber pads. Like all mechanical keyboards, this one has everything I need for gaming and work. Where it stands out, for me, is that this model has NONE of the things that I DON'T want.

Cons: The only thing I don't like is that the windows button lock feature doesn't stay on after shutting down the PC, but that is to be expected.

Other Thoughts: So many manufacturers try to gimmick-up high-end quality keyboards with extra macro buttons, LED displays, wrist rests, USB hubs, lighting schemes, etc. Maybe it does help sales, but I find it all off-putting. The lower-end mechanical keyboards seem to make compromises of quality with connectors that break and flimsy construction. This model is exactly the high-quality no-frills keyboard I was looking for. Thank you so much, CoolerMaster!

5 out of 5 eggs

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: I really enjoy this keyboard, my hands became sore from using rubber dome keyboards. I took keyboarding classes in school and I learned to type very fast. I am really better at games since I got this keyboard.

Cons: My hands are cramping from using rubber dome keys and now they're getting used to (very fast) mechanical keys.

Other Thoughts: I would recommend cherry mx Browns to anybody who wants a mechanical keyboard without researching any other different key types. I notice there is some audible feedback from typing. They almost feel like a rubber dome keyboard except there's more force needed.

5 out of 5 eggsLove this keyboard

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Only just received this in the mail yesterday, but man am I loving it's minimalistic looks yet awesome feel. Very well built keyboard. Went with the cherry MX brown switches as to not annoy other people in my house. the 8X repeat button while using the PS2 plugin is perfect for when I am trying to get in a game lobby that is full of people. I just put it on 8X repeat and hold down the enter button and it will spam the enter lobby button until there is a next available spot for me. Which is way better than sitting there clicking it over and over or smashing my enter key until I get in.
All in all for the price I think this is a awesome keyboard and well worth it.

Cons: Would have loved to have seen back lighting... I thought it had it since the smaller version on this keyboard does have it, but I failed to check before purchase. But that's not really a make it or break it deal for me.

3 out of 5 eggsGreat Keyboard While it Worked

This review is from: CM Storm QuickFire XT - Full Size Mechanical Gaming Keyboard with CHERRY MX Brown Switches

Pros: Very heavy and durable feel to it. Key presses feel nice. I like the simple layout and simplicity of it. I like the detachable USB cable.

Cons: The "W" key stopped working 23 days after I purchased it. I play FPS games, rendering this keyboard completely useless now.
